Re: 1971 16' ss

I had some issues in the front section that I'm going to sand back down to the hull and repaint. I hate to loose the time doing it, but I won't be able to live it if I don't. (I forgot to wipe it down after spraying the zinc chromate, so there is zinc dust in two sections)

It would be on the very bottom where no one would ever see it, but...I would know it is there...and it would bug me.

We sanded back down the problem areas and reshot them. I had a hard time getting the HF gun to spray well the other day. I thankfully had purchased two, and switched to the other gun today. It shot loads better than the initial one.

Before the crowd says green tape green tape green tape...lol. I did use it to cover everything that would be seen and only used the blue tape on the bottom side of the trim. I plan on pulling it off after the primer dried and replacing what blue is on there, with green for the topcoats.

The blue tape will annoy the heck out of you when you go to remove it, but it's fine for that application.

Hello veilside180sx,

I saw you post the resto of your sliding doors to the bilge/battery compartment. I have a 1974 16 foot SS I'm doing some resto work on. Did you use new plastic "C" channel at the door top/bottom to ride in the tracks? My plastic is shot and I cannot find a repalcement. Any help would be appreciated.

Now there you go Puge. I have telling everyone they can get a ton of help at a local glass shop. Windshields, sliding track assemblies, aluminum braces, etc. BTW, from experience, throw away the blue tape, get green.:p

Hung up plastic and shot the first coat of White Rusto. Couldn't even notice that dent in the front with the old paint, but it sticks out with the fresh coat.

Can I just say...I hate waiting and the 24 hr ticking clock after each coat is super annoying. There...I said it.

We have real color today. Yay!! I'm pretty happy with how the color came out personally. The interior is going to be a Silver Hammered finish now as well. (problem with paint...to many colors/finishes to play with)

It is soooo much easier to see how thick it needs to go on with colors that aren't identical. (ie...not white topcoat on white primer)

The gas tank is all bent up and ready for welding as well.

You can see the baffles inside in this pic. They should control any sloshing that could potentially cause issues.

Re: 1971 16' ss

We are really contemplating pulling the trigger on a used 50hp 4 stroke. Figure...it's better to do it now, than after we've been running oil in the gas tank for the 2 stroke.

Thanks PS. We think it's coming along nicely as well. Nothing is perfect, but it's plenty workable.

Your 50 should do a great job. My 16 has a older rebuilt 50 Evinrude and is fast enough for me and I like speed. The 4 stroke will give you more push as the newer motors are hp at the prop. The older ones were not rated that way

Second coat went on this morning

I like that blue and was thinking of using the same on my Islander. Just not sure how much of the boat should be painted that color, that would be a lot of blue to paint the whole thing. But I think this here looks very sharp so far.

It's 7" all the way around the way it is. After I take the tape off, I am deciding whether to add a 1" stripe underneath it of the silver hammered color to help tie in the inside of the boat to the outside.

Looks very good Veil, I like it a lot and I really like that color blue. Good work bud and before you know it it is going to be ready for fishing and getting dirty:D
