Re: 1971 16' ss

It actually just had 2 tanks, no in floor tank when I got it. (That pic is deceiving) It will have an in floor tank when I'm done though. The measurements are on another computer, but I'm planning on a 12-16 gallon tank.

Splashwell was initially removed to make it easier to replace the transom. I have contemplated not putting it back in and instead replacing with another structure that takes up considerably less space. If I do keep it the way it is, there will be a considerable amount of storage added underneath it.

I'l have to think about what I would do if I was to remove it though and get back to you.

I see you have removed the splashwell.

Assuming you will replace it.

Using the old splashwell?

Fabricating a new one? same size and shape?

I am looking to modify mine, to give more open space in the boat. Any ideas?

Also, in an early photo, it looks like you have an infloor fuel tank. ??

Size, shape, volume, photos ???? if you have them?

I really like what you have done so far, and am impressed with your skills.

Impressed is a simple way of putting things. Brother, take a look at my thread and decide if this is what you want to do. A little work and a lot of satisfaction. I have been impressed so keep it up.

Your splash well turned out nice, and is typical of many NW style boats up here in size.

The boat will most likely wind up crossing the bar into the ocean, so i may wind up leaving the factory one just to play it safe.

Remember what I said earlier. BE VERY CAREFULL where you go. Have you taken the Coast guard course on how to cross the Columbia and other bars??? Stay safe but enjoy your new toy. Pugetsound

It's not my first time in the Ocean, but I'm always very careful.=) I wouldn't take a 16' boat across any bar except Newport or possibly Depoe.

Picking up a barely used 1648 Jet finger brake so I can get started on all the bending projects for the boat on Wednesday.

The gas tank, seat boxes, fish box (will fit in the triangle bow area while fishing, but be removable), glove box, speaker boxes, etc will all need to be bent up. All of those will most likely be bent out of .065 aluminum.

Pics of the windows with the new full side window instead of the partial the factory had installed. Painted the frame with a hammer grey finish as well.

Brought my little pet home, and it barely fit in the back of the Pathfinder.

Beats the he-- out of two 2 by 4s, and a vice, also a big hammer. I would love one of those and a variable press with some molds.

Cost a little more than the $20 that setup would too...lol

Just another thing that cost me more than my Starcraft did.=)

It's only money made of paper. A little below face value so all is good you will have fun with that.

It's all good, it'll get well used. I've spent much more than that on tools before, and will again as well. =)

The beauty of mechanical tools, is that if you take care of them...they will last you a lifetime.

Here is the bow reinforcement piece and the front with the Playboard attached. (front is the only piece anyone will ever see)

Any concern with what looks like pressure treated wood on the floor?

Re: 1971 16' ss

Speaking of which...

I picked up the rest of the aluminum today...1 sheet of .125 5x10 3050 tread plate, 1 sheet of .063 4x10 5052 smooth aluminum, and 1 sheet of .080 4x10 5052 smooth aluminum.

That will finish out the gas tank, glove box, speaker boxes, bow fish box, bow seating area, and the seat boxes. I think that's everything else I have to do with the exception of the paint work that I'm loathing to do. (I find myself wishing now that I would've just gotten normal paint to roll and tip)

Re: 1971 16' ss

For once I got everything accomplished on the boat I had planned to. I'll post the pics in a little bit.

After a lot of delay and going back and forth about paint...I bit the bullet. I picked up Rustoleum to replace my higher end automotive paint. Unfortunately I just never seem to have the time to get a paint booth lined up with a time frame that I have. I'll roll and tip like everyone else. =)

Rustoleum Pro Safety Blue will be the accent color, and Gloss White will cover the rest.

Finished just about all of the sanding today

I can see why most people aren't much of a fan of the trailer rollers vs running boards. There are indentations on the bottom of the boat from sitting on the rollers for so many years. I think that I'll play it safe and switch the trailer over to running boards.

Apparently I had missed a post here, to show where we installed the motor bracket reinforcement piece. 3M 5200 was used to coat all bolts that went through the transom.

That transom cap was a pain to get back on...took like 3 hrs to get all the nails back in it.

I rolled a little bit, and gave up. I ran back to the house and picked up the spray guns and shot it with one instead. It took a little bit to get the settings right, but once they were I was rockin' and rollin'. (or sprayin')
