Re: 1971 16' ss

I did a little calculation (see below). Some have said you should be able to "squish" some of the air gaps out, I don't know. My boat had pour in foam and I spent 4 weeks getting it out. I will probably go with sheet foam, but I haven't ruled out the pour in stuff either. Once I get done fixing rivets and applying Gluvit, I may go pour in if I feel 100% I got the leaks fixed. The inside of my hull looks like Starcraft applied Alodine where the pour in foam would be. There are a couple spots where either the Alodine wasn't stuck good (or whatever) that did have a little corrosion, but not alot. I also wonder how much quieter the hull would be with pour in foam over sheet foam or noodles. As far as laying down plastic, I believe North Beach stated the pour in foam would react with it and melt it. FWIW.

I figured it would chemical burn the plastic.

If you slit the noodles down the middle, you loose very little space. My opinion...cram what you can down there and call it a day.

In freshwater...if you can't swim to shore with a PFD...something is really wrong and a little foam likely will not save you.

I found the only thing I see the foam in the floor for is stability to keep the floor from saging. There is not enough there to keep it afloat if it is full of water

I just knew you would disagree. I put a strip down both sides and left the center open to never again plug the drain. How is the young man doing. Has to be a good year any way you look at it . Pugetsound

This is why you have flotation foam.

I would rather have this to hold onto while waiting for help to arrive than nothing.

Will my 72 noodles float my boat? Not really sure. But I do know that I'd be feeling pretty stupid if the unthinkable happened and I didn't put any foam in and my boat sunk to the bottom.

YIKES! OK OK got your point across.I only use my 16 1n the river and it just 30 yads to each side. I only shorted it 2 by14ft by 2 in . Pray for me I wont remove the floor and If I sell it ever I PROMISE to tell the next buyer how much flotation is in it. Hell the wet stuff that came out of it from the factory was next to worthless, besides it retained about 40 Gallons of Water in the hull. Your right Im wrong Thanks for the update.

Ah no PS, I wasn't necessarily disagreeing with you buddy.

I was just being a general butt head and being sarcastic about another floatation debate is all. I should prolly get out of here and let real boat builders have an actual conversation without me mucking up the system.

Sorry dudes, carry on!:D

(pour in foam, nope)
(noodles, blue/pink foam, or a combo of the two, yup)
(laundry soap bottles for those who dare to go against the grain, hmmmm)

Its kind of fun to rile feathers now and then .. Keeps us on our toes and broddens the attention span. Stay out of the deep water and tie the waders waist band, if you dont be like no flotation in your boat or mine. Be stuck with the tide comeing in. LOL Pugetsound. I must be getting bored .

Hey Puget, I hadn't found iboats yet when I re-did my Jupiter. I didn't know any better so I just left whatever pieces of the OEM styro that weren't waterlogged under there. I KNOW now that it was nowhere near enough to float it.

Thats a nice piece of eye candy there. Boat and trailer both look good, how is the interior? of the boat. Just remember if the wood is not broken or soft you don't have to replace it. I have 2 Starcrafts one is a 22 Holiday that I haven't done anything to as there is no obvious problem . And a 16 SS like yours that I just finished a total rebuild. The interior was toast so needed done. If its not broke don't fix it is my motto. Good luck should make a real nice project.

Garyg , Thats the kind of weather problems that ruins floors as it retains water then it frezes and seperats the wood. Hope yours is ok. . I think the best investment is a good travel cover for the entire boat.

Let's ease up on the hijack of V's thread.
