Don't mind the big hole in the back

From what I've been told that's where the anchor went. The big hole made it easier to get in and out of the boat.

Nice donor! W/ twins, are you still going to be using an under deck tank, just larger?

Larger & moving it forward, can give you some assistance w/ the weight of the twins. At the cost of extra long fuel hoses

It originally had two 26 gallon fuel tanks, ne on each side of the motor about a foot infront of the transom. I could probaly move them midship and run the fill on top of the gunwale. I will be putting about the same size tanks back in.

That's gonna' be quite the transom project BN. But I'll bet twins will make low speed maneuvering much easier.

It will be a pain to get the new transom in since it's so big. Probably a 2-3 person job.

I got the donor stripped out today. I took the steering, wiring, gauges, motor and transom components. It also has an aluminum 16 gallon fuel tank I need to get out still. The filler hose just doesn't want to come out.

I still need to do a compression test on the motor, it ran but not very good. It might be a fuel issue or it might need a valve job.

Did a compression test on the motor. Results are 110, 35, 55, 60. It smokes a little to so I'm thinking the rings are bad. I won't know untill I pull the head. I was planning on freshening up the motors before installation anways so it won't be a lost cause.

I worked on cutting some of the stringers out this morning. I got about half way done. I still have some foam to pull out and I need to take a few more measurments so I can put this thing back together someday The weather has been in the low 60's in the mornings so if this nice weather sticks around I can get the hull ground out in prep for new wood.

Question...the engine you did the compression test on, it's a 4 banger?...I am confused...I thought you were going with a pair of I-6's...

Oh wait, I think I figured it out...this is the engine that was in there...? right?

I wanted to go with I 6's but I took weight into consideration. The 4 bangers will be lighter and I'm not building a speed boat so they should be sufficient,


The one with low compression is my first donor. I will be freshening the motors anyway so it's no biggie.

OK...now it makes sense...yeah, I gotta agree with your assessment of them being lighter, plus they should cost less overall in the long haul...less parts to buy/replace...probably less fuel consumption, big plus with the cost of gas...and being lighter, they might even run the the boat quicker...

What make are they?...
Are they originally marinized engines or are you converting from automotive?...

Details, details...

The mechanic in me needs to know...:facepalm:

Be looking forward to a refresher course in refreshing the engines...

They are 140hp Mercruisers so they are already marinized. I just need to find another donor to get the other one I need. I will document the rebuilds if you feel a need to see it

Absolutely, a record needs to be kept. If only for reference & insurance purposes...Could even stand to have a motor thread just for the twin Mercruiser layout, stringer & bracing fabrications, the installs, alignments & hook ups..

(we can keep the 4cyl part under wraps for now)...

Only thing better would be twin 6cyls & only 1 outdrive

Your boat should have no problems with the twin 4 cylinders. I know a guy with a Crownline 262 with twin 3.0 Alpha's and it performs surprisingly well.

I will probably fully document all this. It is going to be time consuming getting the stringer hole filled in, making cutouts for the 2 mercs and making motor mounts. It will be worth it in the end knowing it will be super reliable.

Your boat should have no problems with the twin 4 cylinders. I know a guy with a Crownline 262 with twin 3.0 Alpha's and it performs surprisingly well.

That's good to know. The boat originally had a single 225hp V8 and the PO said it would go 35. With the 4 bangers it will have 280hp and should be more than sufficient for cruising.

I finished removing the foam and stringers today. I'm really excited about this because now I get to start grinding (insert sarcasm here). There is alot of grinding to be done but the forecast for the next week looks good so hopefully I can get a good majority of it done.

We had a pretty busy weekend so I didn't get to work on the boat. Saturday night my wife, sister, a couple friends and I did another 5k run. Mom and dad said I needed to run with my sister since she is only 13. She wore me out! We crossed the finish line in 27 minutes. I was pretty happy with that since I did absolutely no training for this. My sister finished 4th in her age division, I was pretty proud of her.

Sunday we went to a polish festival, that was alot of fun. There were a bunch of rides for kids and adults alike, lots of good food and a ton of fun games.

Yesterday I took an emergency visit to the dentist to have two teeth puled. They had been causing me severe pain for a week and the pain was shooting into my ear. As soon as he gave me the novacaine it felt so much better, then I took a nap in the dentist chair

I'm hoping to get started grinding later today or tomorrow, it all depends how much I get done from my honey-do list
