I'm sure you can find something to do on the boat while the transom cures. Might want to do lots of reading on here especially since you are wanting to go so fast. Just make sure you do things right, mistakes can be costly or result in a boat full of water instead of on the water.

Noted Bill. There is definately enough to do with this boat to keep me busy. I am dreading the thought of polishing the aluminum around the windshield and rub rails. I can always work on that while everything sets up. Also, the wiring under the console is a holy mess! I have never seen so many wire nuts under a dash in my life!! Lots to do.. :joyous:

Yea the wiring in those old boats leave something to be desired. I half way rewired mine and my boat mechanic thought I did a great job, I was like not hardly, I did just enough to figure it out. That's one of my projects after I get her rebuilt modern wiring with bus strips and a fuse box.

Back to topic, make sure you do the structure right so you won't have to do it again in your life time.

Ok, here are some promised photos. I do not believe that there is any curve from the factory transom. I believe that any curve/warping of the rear skin is due to the "repair" made by the P/O. He place a new piece of 1/2" ply over the old rotten 1" transom core. Combine that with an old heavy motor and no cover for several years= bowed out rear skin. Though I could be wrong. Take a look.

Sorry for the bad light. Dark in the garage. Trying to give you a view across the rear skin from the side.

This last picture is showing before I removed the old transom core. see the bend where motor hung..

Glassing one side in the garage (bad idea)
My fiance put me in time out later for making the house stink.

Other side completed outside (No mad fiance and faster curing time)

Nice work. Women like being on boats but when it comes to making them safe and sea worthy, well that is a different story:facepalm:

Built three of the clamps I will need last night and then other chores got in the way. Going to assemble three more tonight. Looks like I may be able to bond the new core in this weekend (weather permitting) as long as this old hull doesn't throw me any more curve balls.

I keep saying that too. It's a war between my boat and Mother Nature. Nothing will get done tonight because of the cold:nightmare:

Don't know how wide your transom is but I only used 5. Mine is 64 on top and 54 on the bottom. 5 worked out good for me.

Thanks. I figure 5 will probably due the trick. It's just that the rear skin is so wavy from years of neglect that I may need an extra. Better to have and not need than need and not have.

I had the same problem, I cut the back part of my cap off and now it doesn't fit right; more work. One of the thing I did was placed my transom in and clamped it and placed all the lights I had (3) on the outer skin and left it there for a week. When I glued the transom in I did the same thing, left it there for a week with some heat on it. It straightened out some. Besides you are going to need to practice getting those clamps on quickly and correctly you only get one chance to get it right. WOG method works great, just the thought of drilling holes in my new transom made me cringe but it worked out great.

I like the idea of using lamps. I have about a dozen (we raise chickens and rabbits). And I know what you mean about practicing with the clamps. I am trying to preset each one so I will need very little adjustment.

Just finished building the rest of my clamps! Just need an extra set of hands on the core when I go to install it. Looks like Sunday morning before I can get it in.

Re: 1973 glasspar cutlass 165 rebuild..

Practice, Practice, Practice!!!! Remember Tighten the bottom bolt, Loosen the top one to make the clamps work. Tighten bottom bolt first Just barely snug to the top of the transom then loosen the top bolt to tighten the lower portion of the clamp to the lower portion of the transom then tighten the lower bolt to the upper transom and go back and forth. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. When it starts to squeeze out STOP!!!!! Drilling the holes in the transom to allow the PB to ooze thru is a GOOD Think IMHO!!!!. Having a Partner to help IS a GOOD Thing!!!! 2-3 Practice Runs IS a Good Thing!!!!! 5 Clamps should be enuf.

Re: 1973 glasspar cutlass 165 rebuild..

Transom core is in. After several trial runs on saturday night I finally got the courage to set it in place. Everything went well and appears to have bonded quite nicely.:D I am going to remove the clamps tonight and start tabbing it in. I also need to glass in the bildge area to make it watertight. I will post more pics as I proceed.

Qusetion regarding the new drain plug insert.. What is the best type to use? I was told to stay away from the brass plugs and fittings. Just not much explanation as to why.

Not sure who told you that or why. I'd use brass and you can make your own Flange tool too!!!...
Study this and follow the directions carefully. You can buy one for approx. $40 bucks.
