Re: 1973 Ozark Tri Hull - Deck Rebuild

Hey boss,

I'll throw peanuts!

I have some outer hull repairs as well... My plan is to finish all demo grinding, flip the boat, repair and re-gel those areas only. Then flip for the last time, and build the new deck area, and finish the inside. Looks like you need to grind the area to see whats under the old repair. I would go very slow, as to remove as little material possible.

Dust tent looks great, but be warned. the dust bomb of doom well infiltrate everything!

You should be able to do most of your repairs from this inside. A few layers of csm and epoxy resin should fix that issue and make it very strong.

Yeah that is what I was thinking. Thanks for letting me know about the dust. I am going to try to keep it vacuumed as much as possible. The main reason of building the tent is to keep the water from pooling on my tarp.

Thanks Tallcanadian, when I grind the inside I will reinforce the area with some csm and resin. I do think that I will smooth the outside also.

hey guys quick question waxed or unwaxed resin?

Tri Hull Guy, Welcome to Iboats.
It is advisable to Read the Forum Rules before posting on these forums.
We understand you are excited to start your project and excited to start posting, and believe me i was the same way before someone posted and asked me to read the rules.
Hi-jacking a post is when someone posts on someone elses thread with questions regarding their own rebuild such as what resin to use etc... and frankly its sort of frowned upon so like i said i was glad someone had mentioned it to me because that was not my intention in the first place.
If you start your own thread, you will get more help that way because people will be spilling into your thread eager to assist and to follow along on your project.

I hope i dont offend, and i hope im not out of place by posting this... thought i would give you a heads up.

I know that I am jumping ahead a little but I am wondering about foam. I am planning on cutting up foam insulation panels to do the foam in my boat, but I am unsure what is the best kind to get and what is its brand name??

My own opinion is to use the pourable exspanding floatation foam. Because if there are no voids. It makes it harder to get condensation in the voids under the deck.

Yup Lol! You'll be needing a rag to keep them goggles clear though. Enjoy. This to me is the hard part. After all the grinding comes the fun of putting things back together. :)

When are you fiberglass guys gonna learn that there's not need to dress up like an umpa loompa-astronaut just to work on a boat :) ? Just get yourself a tinny, a hammer and some duct tape and you're good to go. They're shinny and recyclable too :) Happy grinding (sucker) :) !!!!!

Thanks for the tip I definitely needed a rag for the goggles...as I was working I would catch myself adjusting my head to see out of the goggles in a clearer area LOL.

Well I don't think that I have the right shop vac to get the job done in a box. The canister on my shop vac doesn't have a hole to empty the contents out. So while it was working, after a while it stopped working. When I opened the box the whole vac was covered with dust. I took it out of the box and blew it off and then used it like normal. Its okay though once I get into a routine down it won't be so bad. I think that if I had a bigger vacuum with a vent out of the canister it would be better.

Thanks for the tip Woodonglass!!

Tip: Believe or not one of the best antifogging fluids for the inside of your goggles is... Your very own Spit!!!! Spit on em and use your finger to wipe it around. You'll be amazed at how it keeps em from fogging up. Tip2: Wax the outside of the lenses with some car wax. It will help the dust "Slide" off a bit better. Tip3: Tape up all the vents on the googles and make sure you got a great seal around the edges. Don't want ANY dust getting in, NONE!!!!

Re: 1973 Ozark Tri Hull - Deck Rebuild

Day one of grinding is in the books. I will call this a success.

Here is the amount of area I was able to get finished:

Here is a picture from the other side:

Here are some of my observations:

-The safety equipment worked out great. I didn't have very much dust on me at all.
-This is the time of the year to grind. 40-45 degrees outside is much better than sweating in the heat.

Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to get more done!!

Thanks again for the tips Woodonglass...yes the dust is every bit what I expected it would be. I have some auto body experience but I would take bondo dust over fiberglass dust.

BTW in one of my pictures you can see my grinder. It has a 5" 24 grit flex wheel on it...not that I am promoting using a grinder without the guard, but it is working out great!!
