still working on getting the transom out...picked up one of those 21k OPM oscillating tools with the half moon cutters....cuts through the glass pretty well and can get right flush with the edges.....

in my haste..i took out the motor mounts, but forgot to measure their locations.... :(

Here's a question for ya...my stringers dont go all the way to the transom...they stop about 1-1.5" short of the transom..inbetween the stringers and the transom is the foam...
hard to imagine how much strength it is adding to the boat without being tied to the transom.

anyone else every see a setup like that?

Looks like you found a whole lot more work for yourself. I have seen a few boats where the stringers aren't tied into the transom but I think it is alot stronger when they are.

yeah, i think i will tie them into the transom when i get to that point...right now i've just been waiting on a break from the temperatures...for the last week or so, wev'e been in triple digits....unusual temps for us

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

another thought i've been considering...going foamless...since i am over the 20' requirement from the coast guard, i am not required to have foam....

thoughts??

and yet another thought...i was thinking of moving the engine forward, about 30"...and connecting the the engine and the outdrive together using a type of driveshaft with support bearings...
part of this thinking is also because i was thinking of moving all the seating forward about 30", i could build a small sundeck behind the seats.

thoughts??

I'm not sure of about moving the engine forward, though it might be possible. If you are really wanting a sundeck, you could build one as the motor cover. Our ski boat is set up this way and looks nice. I will try to post some pics here soon.

Here's a pic of the back seat and the sun deck / engine cover

And here's one with the cover open. It is connected with a continuous piano hinge. The bimini top stores under there as well.

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

i was kinda thinking something along that line, but being only 30" from front to back would not give me alot of access to the engine.
i'm gonna have to get back inside her and do some rough measurements to see how much room i have to work with.
i might be able to take the long seat cushions i made and use them as the sundeck, if i put the end to end. have them hinged along the sides of the boat.

well..just from reviewing the seating diagram i have over on my seat thread, it looks slike if i take the 2 long seats and put them end to end, that would be a good width from the sundeck...but only gives my a sundeck that is only 20" deep...maybe 24" if i have the sundeck even with the top of the seat backs

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

okay...here is my original design for my seating, and i have these seat cushions made..
LAYOUT1.jpg

if i re-arrange the side seats and their backrests...i can come up with a 72"x30" sundeck..
LAYOUT2.jpg

i can put the hinges on the outer sides of the deck and have it open from the center outwards to the sides...could put a couple of linear actuators on there so i can open/close with the push of a button

I wouldn't do it with an I/O.The weight forward may prevent the boat from getting on plane.Just my $.02.

yeah, i was thinking about that..boat struggled enough getting on plane before....but is was heavy with soaked foam and was under powered.....both of which are being resolved

Another issue is the angle of the drive.the further you move the motor out,the more it will need to be raised to keep a straight shot to the drive.I wouldn't do a double U joint shaft. It would vibrate and tear the boat apart. What about the clutch?Does it require the drive housing to operate it?

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

no clutch..as far as driveline angle, i dont see much of an issue with that...setup would be similir to the drive line in a rwd car...
but, i have decided not to move the engine...would eat up too much room

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

Hey man, thanks for stopping by my thread, you have done alot of work to this boat. paint looks like it came out great and I agree the gauges will look great in there.

Reading your last recent posts, Just my thinking because I like open space in my boat. keep the seating as you originally planed and just make a large cushion split or hinged for storage that can just lay on top of the other seating maybe to the same height as the back rest/bolster pads. This way if you know you are going rafting up for the weekend, bring the sun pad, if your going fishing, keep the sun pad at home or in the cabin for more fishing room.

I would put the motor back in the same location so you can trouble shoot correctly and not have to worry about modifications, also get some trim tabs, that will help that old girl come out of the water in half the time. Look forward to watching the rest of your work. Keep in mind if you are replacing power, not all motors are created equal. Mine originally had a 260 hp 350 in her. It now has a 325hp 350 in her. Now it has the right power. Cost a little more, but it was worth every penny. :) Budd

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

thanks CC for stopping by..
haven't made my mind up on the seating yet, still plenty of time for that.
mine originally had the 188hp ford 302...i'm a big ford guy, so that 188hp is easily taken car of (hmmm....427w engine??) lol....but my current outdrive is only rated to 300hp i think....plenty of time for thinking all that through...

right now, stuck with getting the rest of the transom, deck and stringers out....all the manual labor stuff.
when the funds start coming in, i can focus on the new wood and glass.
