Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

here's what showed up so far:
IMG_20120724_064547.jpg

4 gallons of 435 poly resin
12 yards of 1.5oz CSM
2lbs 1/4" chopped strand
5 quarts glass bubbles
10 yards of 1708
and a few resin rollers and a couple bubble rollers...

now i just need to finish prepping the transom in the boat and get me a couple sheets of 3/4" ply and i'm ready to tackle building the new transom.....in triple digit heat...ugghh

well, got a little more of the wood out yesterday...and grinded some....

then had a little fiasco with the bucket of 1/4" chopped strands....i put that in a seperate thread as a "tip" to other glassers

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

got almost all of the transom ground down. Took a bunch of measurements for the new transom, pretty straight and even except at the very bottom where the drain is. will end up making full size template just to be sure.

Looks good mrdjf! Is that wood still on the skin or just wood grain shadow?

shadow...the resin took the shape of the grain...might be a few slivers of wood there....so i guess we could say there is a little bit of you one there...woodonglass

got the transom template made....left about 1/4 gap along the bottom and sides...

building the transom and resin coating it outside the boat does not look like an option...it's looking like it is goign to have to be sectioned within the boat

Wow its like I am looking at my boat. I haven't had any free time lately, but I will get you those measurements. I don't know how you are doing but my crotch is getting sore from climbing in and out of my boat.

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

i may make me up a frame of a transom with some 2x4's...to play around with the possibility of getting it in there in one piece....keeping fingers crossed

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

Hmmm, I guess I'm not understanding your dilema with the transom not being able to go in as one piece. Am I being Dense or something???

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

with the way the cap overhangs into the hull on the back and sides, for right now atleast, it doesn't look like i can maneuver the new transom into the hull...and removing the cap is not an option

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

Ya, I can see where it would be a pain to put a full transom in. I will be dealing with that on mine soon. I have a little more headroom in the back to work with though. The factory had it easy putting transoms in before the cap was on.

Re: 1973 SRV 220 OV Resto

yeah...this is going to be a PITA!!!!
i'm back at looking at 3 layers of 1/2" with the seams i detailed earlier.
but i'm also looking at 2 layers of 3/4" with horizontal seams, with the seams overlapped about 10" apart...
or possibly 2 layers of 3/4" with horizontal seam on one layer and vertical seams on the 2nd layer...
i'm going to run the data through some stress calc software (ANYSIS) and see what the results are

Here is the sketch of the engine stringers based on the pieces i kept and the measurements I took as I tore them out. All of the measurements were to the plywood not the final layer of glass. If you have Google sketchup I can send you the file.
