Looking good bayliner, What type of paint are you using on the aluminum?

I am using

Metallic Silver, SX

3851219

Spray can

Using Zinc Chromate 2-3 coats (1-2 hours in between) and finishing off with the metallic Silver. I am going to pick up some Clear Coat and coat it to help proptect it.

I followed it correctly, and i actually had to clean again with Alumna Prep and reapplied the Alodine as it was not sticking to some of the things!!! came out looking just as I had wanted it too!!!


Just an Update everyone... I am still trying to get used to this new MACBOOK that i bought my wife and since moving havent set up my PC... (which has all of my preffered editing tools) so it may take a while to upload the video of my painting...


I dont plan on keeping the outdrive Stock Color.. .which is why i went with Silver SX paint... But I dont plan to keep it 1 color Either... I have someone who can make Airbrush VOLVO PENTA 270 in the design below onto both sides of the outdrive which i think would be too cool!!

Here is the proposed Layout of the painting on my outdrive...

(before i show it.. i should let you know, I prematurely sent these two peices (above) to be blasted... i still havent finished the engine, so my priority in the next few weeks is gonna be on the engine...)

Just an Update for all my Followers...
Here is a little taste of what is going on in my life:
As of today at 3:00pm we are beginning to sign paperwork for a house!!!! 3 car garage 2300 sq ft! only thing i dont like is there is no backyard room for a shop or canopy!!!
but its gonna be about 3 months out from actual signing... so until that time, i have to assemble the engine (because its in containers taking up space in my dads garage) and i have to begin and finish Grinding the fiberglass... once i have the grinding done... I will put the cap back on the boat, and hopefully fix the trailer, and haul it over to the new house in the garage until i purchase rolls of Fiberglass and resin and begin that stage! but as you can tell. super excited.
Wish me luck...

Yeah, But different from that picture that is posted. I am now thinking that the Yoke Part should also be Black, and the Transom Shield will be the SX Silver... All will come together when The Outdrive is Priority... Right now its the Engine lol i need to stop waisting time.. (not necessarily waisting.. since its all going towards a better ending but still i need to set my priorities straight)

Thanks Guys... Try to keep up lol the ADD is really kicken my butt!! every time i try to focus on one thing i get distracted... im just glad i have kept this boat hobby up for a while!! usually hobbies last 1-2 months tops

Looking good. You may find a print shop that can print vinyl stickers for your outdrive for a lot less than the airbrush work.
Not too much black, you don't want your outdrive mistaken for your anchor...

Now your working on a deadline...That should help keep you motivated.

thanks capn' although congrats dont need to come until i sign the closing papers lol!!
I figured as much on Black.. but like i said it will be more down the line... The reason i mostly decided to go with multiple colors was because of the Prop that came back painted black. So i wanted it to look like it belonged... Plus the SX Silver is going to work well with the final color of the boat... I am sticking with Orange with purple and Silver Tribals on the side.. i have a design drawn up but its subject to change, and thats the last thing on the boat anyways!

To all who follow... I am just updating you. The Seller for the house we are looking at accepted our offer. So for the next 40-80 days I am saving every penny of every paycheck for the downpayment on the house. If all goes well we should be closing on the house in under 80 days.. Wish us luck.
All work on the boat will stop for now, but i promise it will continue once i move the engine into my new house and get my garage situation.. should take too long... Grinding will commense when it is a little warmer say in March.. after we close on the house, i will do the grinding at my parents house under that tarp canopy... but once the grinding is done, i will move the Trailer, Boat to my house. where it will sit in a heated garage so i can start the fiberglass work in a warmer environment.

ladies and gentleman following my post!! i am so sorry i have not done anything yet! we are set to close on the house on April 27th so by the end of april the boat will be in the garage and the work can really begin! here is a quick update for anyone wanting to know how to remove the old Stickers etc from the old boats! more efficient and cheaper and quicker than my previous post to how to remove the old decals.

Minor update for those who are following.
The house process is going great, finalizing paperwork and next friday we should be closing...
Me and my brother pain stakingly loaded the cap back onto the boat and the boat back on the trailer.
Than i will tow strap the crap out of the boat to make sure nothing will fly out of it on the way to its new home

Just realized the cap of the boat is more sound than i figured.. which is good, also noticed there was not any warping of the fiberglass hull from when the boat was sitting without a cap or straps or any support from the sides. which i think is possibly because the battery boxes were stil connected to the 2 inch lip around the boat, and since the battery boxes where still connected to the transom i think everything stayed rigid.

But anyhow cant wait to detrailer it again onto the home made boat dollies that i will make at my new house. this time i can actually wheel it around, the place its currently sitting is on soil so no wheel dollies would help there unfortunately

I will let you guys know the update once i get it home.
should be roughly 8 more days. i cannot be patient any longer i have a schedule on a calandar already that is updated with all of the days i will work on the engine, than outdrive than grinding, glassing, gel coat repair/patching, paint

Been reading over your resto... You getting there....It can be a slow process with work and home life in the mix

Can't wait to see the boat in the new garage

The chisel seemed to work well to remove the pin stripes.....I would just be worried of gouging the gel coat

Yeah I worried a bit about that too but after going at it not much of any damage on gel coat . Since I will be doing repairs and painting with poly paint I don't have an issue though. Thanks onc in the home the rebuild will go fast. The wife already knows I will be in garage every day

Just got on here. Really enjoyed the info on your Bayliner restore project…Brings back memories of 20 yrs ago when I did my 71 Newman DeVille. Just like yours, a complete gut & go type project. Good work & thanks for sharing! Enjoy the new house, & the Bayliner when it’s done.

So just a quick little update, decided while im waiting for the boat to go to its new home i could do something worhtwhile, so off to the fabric store i went, got some NON-marine grade vinly to practice.. here are my results

Trying out the Welt... (this welt was made by me also), i did not buy the premade welt. i figured i would get more practice that way. i think it turned out nice what do you think?
