Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

Update:
I posted this on my engine forum post but here is an update for my actual rebuild:

so the day has gone by. today was stage two of my disappointment.
Tommarow i am going to take my engine to another machine shop (they charge a little more than my other one) but i have heard great things from them. I will have him inspect the block, the camshaft and tell me if either the camshaft is unbalanced, or the bearings are the incorrect size, If it is the incorrect size than i am in luck and i will either have him bore the bearings to the fit the camshaft, or have him pop those out, and i will get the correct ones. i will have him measure everything out. hopefully this will resolve everything.
and i will be back in business

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

I have some bad news for all that have been following along. in the past 6 months me and my wife had had a house deal that went south, which if it hadnt would have been a great help in my rebuild... giving me more room to work etc etc...
After that it seems that fate is not on my side as some of you know. I have been having some trouble assembling the engine, after long talks with marine mechanics and fellow iboaters i have come to the conclusion that the block itself is bad... after putting in over 600 dollars in machine work it will need to be scrapped. me and the wife have decided that it is best to cut our losses on this one and scrap the hull, since it is just the hull, that way my dad can have his parking space back... and we are going to sell the good engine parts and all of the new stuff we purchased... :( i have been very unhappy the past few days with this grim reality.. but it is a reality nonetheless... Thank you EVERYONE!! for all of your help and support with this project.

I do not plan to throw away my newfound hobby for boats... and when i have my own house.. where i can control if i keep a boat project on the side of the front yard or not, i plan on getting another project boat... And once again i will take to Iboats...
I will not leave you, i will still visit and look at your threads. Thank you once again, and please understand. There is nothing i can do to change our minds now...
This is whats best for us now. Good night to all...

Oh wow. So sorry to hear. I just found your thread last night and read through it all. I was really excited for this project. One thing is for sure, there are plenty of other project boats out there to be had. What exactly was wrong with the block that made it unsalvageable?

On the bright side, you learned a lot through hands on processes. You can transfer this knowledge on to your next project and save time and money there. So, not a total loss.

I'm so sorry to hear about your issue with the boat. I've really enjoyed seeing how you've progressed. Based on what I've seen on this thread, I bet we'll see some amazing things from you once you get your own place.

Good Luck

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

Havent been in here in a while... thought i would update all of you as to what happened...
My boat project was cut up and thrown away due to space restrictions around august when i finally got to it. still have all engine parts though.. anyways on August 1st i got my motorcycle endorsement, and on august 20th i was hit off of my motorcycle. I was in the hospital for 10 days and than in the rehab facility for 2 months. now i am still recovering in a apartment home... sadly to say, the guy who i hit (he was at fault) he pulled out in front of me to make a turn when i was going on a green light at an intersection. I flew off my bike, and broke my pelvis, my left foot, and both my legs. I am still in constant pain.. but i thought i would update everyone.. i apologize for having to end my project abrubtly... my parents needed the space as they are selling there house so i had to get rid of it. since the house deal went sour... i kept telling myself i would not give up on this project but fate got to me.. hopefully i will recover fully... doctors told me they were surprised i lived.. i broke the bottom part of my body so bad they were able to save me. although now you may call me the tin man.. Below are a CT scans on my bones, and i will attach a video to which a City videographer captured on the day of my collision.. hopefully during summer if i am up to it, i should have my own house and if i am walking i will be doing a project just not sure what... thank you all! i look forward to surfing the waves of iboats once again..

Bummer

Keep us up to date on your progress. Did you get 1 of those nifty little cards to carry thru metal detectors at the airport? Gotta look for the positives. The Admiral was very clear when I gave up the motorcycle: I was lucky enough and she was worried about me, add in other drivers & she hated my riding it every single time I left the condo....

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

thanks Jb.. No unfortunately they did not give me the card, they told me the new rods and hardware they have in me wont go off.. and if it does just to wear light clothes on my next trip so they can easily see the scars :p yeah i will never ride again unfortunately.. too many people not looking out for motorcycles :(
