Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

little update for everyone.
So i tried this online auction for the first time and i won something! 7 brand new in box 3m Full face respirators m/n 6900.. I won it for 200 bucks. after fees and taxes it was about 250.. still a good price. I show up and apearently someone fudged the numbers and they only had 4... So i got some money back ended up paying about 130 for all 4. Kept one for myself (below) for when i do fiberglassing! YAY and just sold the other 3 for 50 bucks a pop. I think i did good.

Also, I decided since im still waiting on parts to arrive i would kill some time making a video of me going at it polishing the copper cooling tubes. never polished before i think i did really well.
Here is video and pictures

THe two pipes compared, One that was polished the other not.

yes i know! and since im not allowed to sell stuff on here thats a shame i would have shared my greatness and sold them to the many who rebuild boats on here.
But i would encourage everyone to try those consignment auctions! lots of fun stuff to find... of course this auction thing was inspired by friscoboater lol with his storage auction!

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

I found out the website boatinfo.no has alot of great manuals etc ! So i printed off the outdrive manual and engine manual for my boat and went to kinkos. Ten bucks later Viola!

Now its a little more organized... because the one thing i hate is working in the garage with power tools and hand tools and greasy things... and using a laptop to read PDF's!!

Now that your getting to the engine stuff. You need to check your oil cooler. I don't want you to have the same issue when you fire it up. If you want to I'll take photo's later with my old one so you can see how I tested mine.

Ugh I can't believe it's happening again :( I have to hot tank the block remove the cam bearings because the machine shop has to bore the cylinders and they say debris will damage te bearings... Oh well so I gave my block to the machin shop so they can begin pistons arrive tommarow .. Oh look what I got in mail today :)

Perty! Hey you need to take them your flywheel and vibration dampner as well. Have them balance the engine.

Yes. You should have them put new wrist pin bushings in your rods as well. To balance it. They will need the Pistons, Rods, Crank, Flywheel, and vibration dampener. And check those pins on the pistons. If your crank is 6 bolt they will be 22MM, If it is eight bolt it will be 24MM. Just check them against the old ones with your calipers.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

looks like car quest will have to call me back tommarow thier engine guys are closed at 5:00... No problem.
So i measured my wrist pin bushing on the inside its 23.98 but i think its 24. my measuring tool is from HF so it kinda sucks..
and the old piston pins are 24mm
the new ones are 22
so what size bushings do i need. 22's? and if i get 22's will they fit into my wrist thing regardless?
I am just trying to understand. the Wrist pin bushing specific to this motor is the same OD but the 22mm vs the 24mm numbers are referring to the ID correct?

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

First off let me appoligize for not updating this part of my thread. I ended up taking my original pistons back for this same issue. The pistons I ended up with are: http://www.itmengine.com/mycarparts-catalog. They also have 20 over instead of 30 if your motor is good enough for it. But the 30 over # is RY2600-30 manufactured by ITM engine components. Better price too. Unless your machine shop will machine the new pistons to work. I did do a side by side comparison and the skirts were the same except for the pin bores. Again sorry bud. But if you can get your money back you should be able to get the others at a savings.

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

That part you gave me is for a Volvo 164 which is a 6 cylinder. but according to my research its a B30 block which is exactly the same as B20 but with 2 extra cylinder.
Volvo B18 and B20 Over Head Valve engines.

These are found in Volvo Amazon, Volvo PV, Volvo Duett, Volvo 1800 "The Saint", Volvo 140 and Volvo 240.

Stroke: 80 mm (3.150 inches)
B18 bore: 84 mm (3.307 inches)
B20 bore: 88.9 mm (3,500 inches)
Con-rod length (c to c) 145 mm (5.709 inches)
Firing order: 1-3-4-2
weight approx: 155 kg
piston height, total: 71 mm (2.795 inches)
piston height, pin center to top: 46 mm (1.811 inches)
piston to wall clearance: 0.01-0.03mm
Crankshaft main journal diameter: 63.45 mm (2.498 inches)
Con-rod's bearing's journal diameter: 54 mm (2.126 inches)
Wrist pin diameter (up to 1973): 22 mm (0.866 inches)
Wrist pin diameter (from 1973 onwards): 24 mm (0.945 inches)

Year model 1974 has an 8-bolt crankshaft.(which is mine)

Older style crankshaft has only 6 bolts for the flywheel. These engines have a forged steel crankshaft. Also the con-rods on the 6-bolt engines are forged, not sure about the 8-bolt ones though. The cam shaft is inside the cylinder block and valves are being operated by pushrods. Both the cylinder block and the cylinder head are made of cast iron. Exhaust and intake channels are on the same side of the cylinder head.

B30

Used in Volvo 164

Pretty much the same engine as B20, but has two extra cylinders. Same year to year changes apply. The transmission connecting pattern is different to any other Volvo engine. Intake and exhaust channels are in different order than in the B20 engine. All other parts are same, or with only minor changes. The pushrods of the B30 are also shorter than those in the B20.

So needless to say looks like i have to return some stuff tommarow. no biggie :)

Re: 1974 Bayliner Discovery 1850 Restore

Got the new parts ordered through CarQuest. Comes to 66.24 for the pistons, and 6.61 for wrist pin bushings. Roughly 300 bucks after tax. Right about what i paid for the wrong pistons alone.
I will have the machine shop remove the newly installed cam bearings :(, hot tank the block to get rid of the rust that has started to accumulate from it sitting, than they will bore the cylinders 30 over to the pistons, wash, install new cam bearings, and attach the pistons to the rods with new bushings. Than it all comes back to me.I do not think i will be balancing the crankshaft because i only had it polished. I will be doing standard Rod and main bearings.

Once all of that is complete i gotta pay that bill and bring it home and hopefully assemble the bottom end of it.and hopefully the top end that way i can get it oiled so it will not rust.

In the meantime i am going to take the paint off of the oil pan, and prep the oilpan, the timing cover, the valve cover and the engine arrester for paint or polishing. Still working on deciding whether the valve cover and timing cover can be polished or should i just paint them.

I recommend that you do. By balancing the engine it will reduce the stress on your crank. Think of an unbalanced engine like a tire out of balance. Only with much more exspensive results. The polish is good. But the machine shop will weight your pistons and if they are not within spec. They will take material off to get them there. Same with the rods, and crank. This will keep the engine from beating itself to death. Check out some video's on You Tube and you will see what I am talking about. Can't remember for sure, but I think I payed less than $150 to have mine done.
