Re: 1974 Starcraft Chieftain

Shes going to be furious, I'm sure of this, but I felt its worth the brow beatings.

The game plan is to keep the boat at the marine shop I turn wrenches at. The Admiral wont see her until shes being splashed.
My first objective is to find a block to rebuild and get the propulsion up to par. While the motor and drive are out I'll replace the transom.
Ive been looking on Craigslist at the junk boats with 140 MerCruisers. I'm hoping to find one that I can witness running but that's proving to be an enigma. If any of you guys have a lead of one you could pass onto me, I would appreciate it.

I was looking a couple of weeks ago. Not sure if she's a runner or not, but the price is right.

a gambler is someone who, at one point in their life, plunked down on the Roulette Wheel of Tin Resto a blank check made payable to the Admiral for an amount of....up to and including their lives.

(sorry, couldn't resist the parody, not intending to imply it's remotely comparable). i like your plan. i have to do stuff all the time with my Admiral on the "fait accompli" plan. some risk, but it's all worth it when you can present a nice surprise.

i am skeptical about whether you can restore something of that magnitude, even given that you work in boat shop, without her noticing the extra time you're spending at work. you may have to out yourself for self preservation.....better she know you bought a $250 cabin cruiser than she think there's Another Woman involved......:target:

that possible donor is old (MR-1 outdrive) and leaves in engine bay are not a good sign. better look at it soon, as i bet he didn't bother winterizing it.

Splash it on your Anniversary...and spin it that it's her Anniversary present....

...and when you hand her the champagne bottle for christening, immediately move at least 5 arm-lengths away

Excellent, mark this date & photo............

No, I remember telling you: mid-week, early Dec, unusually warm day, nice sunny day, we were outside, you were reading a SueG book, had a white t-shirt on......

No, I definitely remember telling you about Chieftain.....

By the way, your hair looked good that day...
 :watermelon:

On 2nd thought, that ^^^ might be oversell. Mine would KNOW something was up, just wouldn't be sure what......

Good luck...........

it has overtones of that "candyland" board game we played when we were kids.....

ya might remind her that you paid less for the boat than one season ticket to your local athletic marketing endeavor.

Re: 1974 Starcraft Chieftain

My wife want's me to find another boat, on the West Coast the pickings are slim to none. I passed up looking at the 25' boat that was a 5hr drive away. I almost made the trip but the price was $4750 and it had a v-8 ford. Mid 70's vintage. Boat looked good from the pictures, no galvanized trailer and use the boat in salt water. The wife was willing to let me look as long as I took her dad with me.
I am still looking, must be a 24-26' with a cabin of some sort. I have a 1986 21' Cheif at this time.
