Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

hey WOG thanks for the fly by. Yeah i used them after the first one. that is where i think things went wrong. had i used them to begin with then it would be no problem. the other key i found for me anyway was to use the roll and tip method with the roll and roll method. lay the paint on horizontally then use the second for the bubbles vertically. that did help a lot as well. also, not sanding it down completely in between coats so it was smooth did not help. My plan is in the summer to wet sand it since it has a nice coat build up on it now and then spray it if it looks that bad. you always see your mistakes and are most critical since you know it's there. it's not bad for the first attempt, but like i said, maybe this summer.

The mix was 2 cups paint, 1/4 cup acetone, about 1.5oz to 2oz of hardener. i believe the hardner was a little more than what was called for your original formula and temps were around 45-50 during the day and then dropped to 30s at night.

i did find on some areas where i sanded down the runs and did a test spot where i sanded out the orange peel before the last coat that the paint on those areas looked A LOT better. so we will see this summer if i get the hankering.

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

Here's the deal... The temps did not help the flow of the paint at all. Hardener should have been 1 oz for 2 cups of Paint. If you got runs it was prolly due to too thick of coats. It does take some getting used to but all in all I think you did a darn good job. Once you splash her, Like EZ says you won't give a darn, and people will be saying, "WOW Nice Looking Boat!!!"

progress update

got the trailer painted.... decided to go with black to help hide the blue shades adn the fact that it was galvanized before a botched 3 paint jobs. To much work to completely remove the paint and then risk the possibility of removing the zinc, all not good factors. so instead pressure washed and hit it with some sand paper to rough it up, hahahah as if it was not already, and then for the first time, tried the spray gun.

Let's just say that the first 3/4 of the spraying took some time figuring out what it was that i was doing wrong. as soon as i started getting dialed in boy what a difference, in the look and the application of the paint. Learning curve was high but since the paint was all messed up and splotchy it really does not seem all that bad. At least it is all ONE color now and get put back together.

to dark for pics tonight so tomorrow i will post some up.

Also got the transom all JB welded and now just have to sand it all down so when i get the trailer back together and the boat right side up the transom can go right on it and get completed.

oh, forgot to add, that spraying it much easier than the roll roll method and now that i have gottent the taste of it, that is the only way to go. Don't get me wrong, the roll roll worked great, but the spray dried much faster for another coat, and took A LOT less time...... in the words of the panda........... SWEEEEETTTT

Hey rr, there is no better feeling than that of a man that masters a new tool in his aresenal. I'm with you on the roll and roll, it works but, no where near as nice as a good hvlp spray gun.

I think it depends so much on the paint, mixing, and temps. My rolled on paint job came out awesome and looked sprayed (wish it stayed that way).

Yah, I tried the roll route. It was quickly and painfully obvious I needed to stop. Sprayen is surely the way for this shadetree boat builder!

I could not agree more........ I have been dying to try it out for years and although not the best guns i am sure but got em HF on sale with a coupon so could not beat the set for 30.00

This i will have to agree with also. got expert advice from WOG and he is on the same lines. i will also say that the again if i had practiced first like i should have on a scrap piece of wood or street sign then i could probably have avoided a lot of the blemishes, heck grapefruit peel, that is more visible at the end, along with a really good sanding. But again trial and error in 50 deg weather witih heaters trying to bring everything up in temp. now with a good base, a good sanding this summer and a quick spray all will look better, but i doubt i go that far as it will be wet time lost..........

if you have a place, such as your 500 acres where overspay on trees is really no big deal and of course the tools...... :D it does take some time but it does come out nice when you do it right. but i have become more of an instant gratification type of person on this one, i wanna see i wanna see and i dont wanna wait ........

Hey RR - The trailer is one color, no rust showing and looks better than before you started. That's the insult. The trailer was a good place to start learning spray techniques. Get it back together and you're past the evil trailer re-do. Perfect. :D

thanks GA, yeah i want it together today so i can set the boat on it and see just how "happy" i am wiht the actual boat color in the sunlight. everyone thinks it is to much blue or that they don't like the blue, "Ford Tractor Blue", so we will see, may have to put on some graphics just to break it up and keep the admiral and kids happy. Besides it's time to get the transom, gluv-it and floor installed already.

Trailer looks pretty good. If you haven't used gloss paint, it would probably look near perfect.

We can't all be that J guy w/ the I$l@nder build... Looks like its an all trailer work weekend headed your way. Hope you've had the weather this week we have. Irks me to no end that I've been unable to work on the boat for 9days. With plenty of sunshine & warm days, but hardly any misrable puke snow days like we should be getting in Jan & Feb, it's really ticking me off.... It was 50-60 the last 3 days when I got home, earlier then I should actually by several hours, so I've lost some great opportunities to make some progress.....

Split my time here hunting for Merc's & sewing machines... Yeah I know, fortunately I had a spare man card w/ some unredeemed punches that I transfer to my regular card every time I PM or email somebody about that 'S'-word machine......

Trailer painted looks good, esp when you do a before & after look at them! It's a trailer, not a Bugatti....$35,000 brake job to change pads, or was it the oil change, anyway... Is they stoopid or somethin'? Or is it just me!?!?! Do not ask my Mrs that, she lies, and will say nope, 100% its him.....

Have a good Thurs & hope the ups, usps, fedex guy brings you some goodies in the mail tomorrow!

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

JBC, i already have 2 sewing machines and i am the one that uses them, and i am looking for a third one that will do upholstery so i can ditch one of the others.......

GA, tell me about it. i ahve been waiting to flip her over. one i get her on the trailer then the fun begins with the install work, so yeah i guess that is what the wooo hooo will be for.

also prepping the other parts, sides, bow etc for and trying to get them painted as well before this weekend. get some epoxy down on the side boards then get them painted. So plenty to try and do before the weekend and trailer so maybe this will be a BIG work weekend on her i hope.
