good to see you again GA.... I wish i could be imping right now but i need to get this one done and then the fun will begin again. Reall the IMP is not all that bad off. a few more layers for the stringers to finish them off, put the floor in and then repair the big hole in the transom skin. The real issue is finding the donor boat for the v8 i want to put in her

working on uploading all the pics on the web so i can update the post.... hang on they are a coming.

so from there it was back out to the boat. here are some shots of the clean stripping off the paint. this was using the sand blasting. Basically it was a pain as my compressor just wasn't big enough, but it did allow the yung uns to help out.

So got the little one to hellp out for about 5 minutes.... Ok, relax everyone i unerstand the silica dust harm etc, but it was only blowing sand out of the gun, it was not blasting anything off while he was doing it and then he dropped it and sid cya dad.

took a break from all that and cut the wood for the seat bases that were rotten and sealed them up.

Then we put the foam back and stapled the old covers back on. no pictures of this sadly witht the staple gun but you know how that goes. if you remember earlier i posted i was re-using the old seats from the IMP. they will eventually get recovered.

so while trying to strip the rest of the boat i got tired of the slow under powered sand blaster and moved to aircraft stripper from the zone. that coupled with chemical resistant gloves and a stainless steel scrubber, almost like a brillo pad, i painted on the stripper and put some in a metal bowl. then i used the stainless scrubber dipped in it and proceeded to scrub it off with ease. then i washed it down with soap and water. Here are my results

now after all that was removed i found some very bad pitting that went all the way through because of the corrosion. at this point i did not have the transom out yet so i really had no idea just how bad the corrosion was. i kept the transom in place for he added rigidity here is what i found on the outside of the transom

more on the corrosion damage later as it was quite bad.

so after that, it was time to wash it down with vinegar and water mix and spray on some self etching primer.

we also tried cleaning up the glue residue and the inside got a good cleaning and scrubbing. the glue was first scraped off and then MEK was used with the stainless scrubber to clean it right off and easily. this shows a test spot and once i get her turned over i will show the inside.

We got the old transom out and discovered that it was warped, my guess is due to it being so rotted, and the weight of the engine stretching out the aluminum transom.

old transom

PA191635.jpg

so we cut out a new transom of auraco, two 3/4' pieces

PA191646.jpg

then the epoxy

both pieces glued together and 2 coats around the edgesand on the side against the transom skin

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

so my solution.....................

JB Weld............ after a good clean up of all debris and wiping down with chemicals, then it was apply jb weld liberally after taping up the exterior where the holes were at. I had a light underneath the boat and turned off the garage light so i could see where all the holes were that needed to be taped up. with the temps being cold once it was applied it took several days to cure even with heaters, lamps etc to hellp it out. next will be to clean up the outside and then apply more on the outside.

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

i still have to grind/sand down the inside to even it all out on the transom so the new one will fit. once it is sanded down then i will be spraying it with self etch primer and then painting the area to help with further corrosion in the future to hopefully stop it or at least delay it.

i will be doing the same with the outside as well. Where the OB will mount my plan is to sandwich two 1/4" sheets of aluminum and then apply it to the exterior of the transom and then place another on on the inside of the transom on the backside of the wood to help dispurse the weight better.

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

ok so now to the other fun part. while it is in turtle position time to try for some paint. I used a scotch brite pad to knock everything off and then an acetone wash. i used the WOG formula with Valspar paint and hardner and I used the roll roll method from WOG and here is an important part, use the ultra fine dense rollers or it does not work out as well. so i first tried on the very bottom of her and found how i was messing up

PA261658.jpg

PA261661.jpg

that showed me the runs and sag areas and how heavy it was going on although i thought it was a thin coat. not so good but not half bad for my first attempt.

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

so after some friendly WOG advice and correction i rolled out the rest of the boat. I forgot to tell you, i used 2 cups for the bottom still did not have enough paint to finish the bottom.

now using the right rollers i was able to use 2 cups of paint and do the entire sides all the way around the boat. BIG difference. the sags and runs were minimum and hardly noticable.

PA281663.jpg

PA261660.jpg

PA261659.jpg

so now i hit all the sags and runs to get rid of them and then sanded it down with 1200 grit for some areas but most of the boat was hit again with the scotch brite pad. Tuesday is supposed to be 65 deg and sunny. if that is the case then i am going to try my had at spraying her to see if that comes out.

hopefully i can get 2 coats on in one day, one around 10am and the other around 3pm. if anyone sees that as a problem please let me know as i have no idea.

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

Forgot, also working on the trailer at this time as well. got new rollers for the busted ones and new bolts as the old ones just snapped off. it is being scraped and sanded to rough it up so if the weather is as it should be then once the boat is done i will spray the trailer at the same time.

if all goes well it will have it's paint done then can be put on the trailer, front part of the trailer removed so it will fit in the garage again then comes the to do list........ see below

* sand down transom inside
* prime transom interior
* paint tansom interior
* Sand down transom
* Install transom
* Sand down top side pieces
* paint
* sand down bow top piece
*paint
* epoxy seal interior side wood panels
* paint wood panels
* prime and paint interior side pockets
* clean and paint OB
* Repair leak in tilt and trim unit

i think that is enough or at least what i can rememer for right now. not much at all

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

I thought you were a little older, Roger. LOL I hope Tuesday is good weather-wise, the forecast keeps changing. Over the weekend they were calling for Tues & Weds to both be nice and now it's down to just Tues. I'm hoping to hit the water- gotta grab days when you can during Winter. The wife got me a Hummingbird that I have to test out.

You've made a lot of progress. The blue is looking good. Is the corrosion where the plywood was under the O/B mount?
