Wish I had the knowledge about the dent repair, but somebody ought to be coming along that does. I saw those rivets were circled and was just curious.

Bummer about all that damage there man. I don't think I would put a lot of effort into pounding that stuff out - maybe try to get the big ones a little more flattened out to make the fastener seat a little better. Maybe.

I'd probably put the time into sealing from the inside. Gluvit, 5200, G-Flex would all be pretty good options, eh.

Fill the entire strakes and keel with silicone? That's the silliest thing I've ever heard. How the heck much would that cost? And would it even ever dry?

I haven't seen one example yet of a keep or strake damaged by freezing water.

And those DRAIN HOLES in the keel and strakes are errors admitted by Starcraft.

Huh, that may be so but....

As I mentioned in my threads and others I have drilled extra holes in the keel so any water will drain out. Now that I think of it, I didn't do that on the strakes, bit I believe I will.

The strakes and keel are not water tight so I'd just assume work with the water (drill drain holes) rather than against it (fill with silicone).

Just my take on the matter.

Enjoy!:)

isnt the reason for the hole in them up by the bow, to let the water out? I have no idea myself so this is good info from both, but i have to as the same thing EZ did, how much would that cost to fill them?

seems like the general consensus is to leave them and fill will Gluvit and/or JB weld, and not work on them, except the gaps along the seam. that area try to straighten out some.

i would have to agree with this and was looking at adding another hole near the stern so the water would drain if the bow was stored up or down. makes more sense with trying to get the water out for these areas than to block it off. the rivets and seams are the only way for the water to come in, if they are sealed there SHOULD be no issues, unless you have a hole

Even that is too much. These are just appendages, not water tight parts of the hull. Gluvit the attaching rivets from the inside and be done with it.

geez ward, you were kinda hard on the beaver........... :)

just knowing she looks like that is bothersome, guess i will get used to it and paint over and forget it was there... will have to erase those pictures too. sounds like the way to go. one quick question, for the Gluvit, do form the chine down on all the rivets and seams, basically the waterline down??

Ugh, that stuff is $ too. Shop around and you can find a deal.

I think you can just squeeze enough out of a quart to finish your 18 footer. For reference, I was able to finish the 22 Islander and the 15 Jet with a gallon. Healthy coating too.

A quart will JUST do your 18'. Start from the rear and work forward so you hit the most important stuff and if you run out towards the end, you're probably done with the submersed stuff anyway.

If any of the Starmada has a chance, tape up your drain holes next time out, use waterproof butyl tape. After retrieval, take the tape off and see what comes out. If DRY, cool, but if water comes out, then water can get in!

Taping the drain holes won't keep the water out as not an inch of the entire keel plate/strake is water tight.

Design flaw or not, admitted or not, we have what we have with these ol Starcrafts. Our metal boats have hundreds of holes through the hull in the form of rivets and it seems the best course of action is to re buck/replace when necessary, and seal em up from the inside with Gluvit (or Coat It, or G-Flex, etc.).

Ah, to each his own though:)

My '76 was just in the lake for 3 straight days and used hard including pretty much getting airborne over big wakes. Not a drop of water intrusion.

Well, then those areas may not have ever been a problem, that said, I will edit out the posts

Hey Starman8, i would prefer that you left them there. Differences in opinions still helps other to make a decision based on having more knowledge available to them. Not everyone will agree with all but may find some nuggets useful for them
