Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

so i have some questions about the roller bunks I was planning on replacing the rollers with and continue to use them, but the more i think about it and the weight distriution i am thinking more that it i should switch over to a 2x6 carpeted bunk with sliders maybe? any thoughts?????

So i picked up this nice little unit from West Marine, 45.00 form them, but since they like to match prices, i found it online for 18.00 and change and they matched the price a fulton 1000 lb tongue jack..... WOOO HOOOO.......

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

Got the JB weld on the bad spots of the transom on the inside and on the outside. then sanded them down on the outside to smooth them out since they will be visible. on the inside, sanded them down to get most of the rough stuff down but no so much perfectly smooth. I wanted to keep some of the build up in those areas since they were corroded anyway.

Then hit it with some etch primer on the inside and outside and then some color as well. this will hopefully keep the corrosion at bay or at least help it some since there is a barrier there now and there was not one before.

PB141683.jpg

Primed

PB141685.jpg

PB141686.jpg

also cleaned up the inside, pressure washed it and removed the old adhesive. In the very bow it looks like the PO used a TON of PL to hold down the bow piece of flooring. you can see the yellow in the bow area

PB141682.jpg

I have not found an easy way to get it off so it may stay there. and I do mean a TON of it.

the color on the exterior and interior of the transom. again just for added protection from corrosion.

Oh i also test fitted the cap that covers it up to make sure all was good as you can see in the pic below

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

Ok so now some of the questions:

1. Where the wood was short on the inner corners of the transom, is it ok to leave it or should i cut some wood that size and glue them in place with epoxy? will it really make a difference? Maybe just put the pieces inside to take up the void, but there is nothing that is mounitng to that area.

2. when putting in the bolts for the transom, OB, lift eyes etc, is 5200 good enough or should i use some thickened epoxy with wood flour drilled oversize then fill it and redrill to the right size?

3. GLUV-IT....... do i just want to pour it along the seams and rivets using a heat gun to get it to flow, paint it on, wat is the right or best application process?? this is being done this week so need some answers to these pretty quickly please.

Transom, Gluv-it and floor trying to get completed this week............

OH YEAH...... RIGHT SIDE UP.......... NO MORE TURTLE

My neck thanks you RR. She looks great right side up. Before you spend $ on new rollers for the bunks try a couple of launch/retrieves first. If they work well then rebuild them, if not go the carpeted bunk path. BTW - trailer looks good.

On the transom corners - If that section is all covered by trim on top and inside I wouldn't worry about it. If it isn't just make some filler pieces to support the trim and transom AL corners.

Bet it feels good to be putting her back together. :D

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

thanks GA, it sure does finally. my way of rebuilding it was to get a couple of side rollers, 2" x 12" and cut them to size. the cost is a lot cheaper than to buy each one individually. like the thought of the extra suport of the 2x6 but the ease of the rollers......... dilemmas, thoughts, confusion and over thinking....................

Maybe just put the pieces inside to take up the void, but there is nothing that is mounitng to that area. My only concern is support for the trim. If the top back and U cap get banged something might get bent

2. when putting in the bolts for the transom, OB, lift eyes etc, is 5200 good enough or should i use some thickened epoxy with wood flour drilled oversize then fill it and redrill to the right size? I've seen that recommendation too I think the 5200 is fine. If I went the over sized peanut butter fill my larger hole would be only slightly larger than the through bolts. Say 3/8th bolts and 5/8th hole. My reasoning is you are trying to eliminate water to wood contact. That would give you 1/4 " around the bolt and some play in case the drilled hole is off a little. Also use washers larger than the 5/8 PB so the bolts can't pull through. And of course 5200. Am I making myself clear?

3. GLUV-IT....... do i just want to pour it along the seams and rivets using a heat gun to get it to flow, paint it on, wat is the right or best application process?? this is being done this week so need some answers to these pretty quickly please. No help on this - yet. My time is coming.

The boat weight is mainly going to be on the keel rollers and either bunk kinda hold it balanced. But as you said the bunk support is spread instead of concentrated at the roller points when hitting bumps. With the way our lakes Yo-Yo rollers would work better when they're low. I've been out 4 times so far and I haven't found a good low water ramp yet. And I'm running out of adjustment on the trailer.

Really looking nice. I like the blue a lot. Run it in the ocean and you have instant camouflage. The fish will never see you coming.:D I think I must do my trailer also, yours puts me to shame.

Looking good man!

Yah, I'd go ahead and add to those transom corners to make it complete.

For Gluvit, you just paint in on the rivets/seams with a cheap chip brush.

Won't be long now before the transom is in, a little deck work, some bits and pieces...then "Splash!"

yeah, i kinda like the bunks with the sliders, plus this is a tilt trailer and i have another idea for her, something that they do back home in Hawaii all the time..... it's a surprise.

Yeah, i kind of thought that as well, it just looks odd and as GA said, if something should smack that area it will be a PITA to straighten out.

a paintin i will go, a painting i will go, hi ho the merry oh, gluv-it painting i will go......... Today

Glen

that is a very big statement there buddy

My trailer was originally set up like yours. I switched to carpeted bunks and feel that's the way to go.

I wouldn't worry about those transom corners. 5200 is fine, paint Gluvit on with paint brush.

Thanks EZ,
I think i may just make them and 5200 them to the other section just as filler. I like your trailer setup with the bunks better than the roller bunks, but then it could be that i am not used to it either. I still have to set up the keel rollers as they are not touching at all now and i want to make sure i get it right.

Thanks glnbnz and Monterey

Hopefully today i can get the holes for the transom drilled, gluv-it on, and either the holes coated with 5200 or oversized and filled, or even slightly oversized ad paineted with epoxy. still can't make up my mind on that one :facepalm:
