Hi folks, at the risk of sounding silly, I'm going to go ahead and post this.

I just bought the motor in the subject from a guy on Facebook. I visited, found the motor was only firing on one cylinder. I swapped the spark plugs and figured out it was the plug and not the coil. I did a compression test and all was close enough to call it ok for a cheap motor.

Fast forward to today... I put the motor up on my trusty large trash can, change out the spark plugs and decide to see if I can get her started. Well, I got a few pulls off before the flywheel just catches on something and stops turning over. So I slowly pull the flywheel and see that it is affecting my throttle. It is turning my throttle to a point, but then stops and won't go any further.

It seems like there is a plate or something underneath the flywheel that is catching the flywheel. It seems it is also linked to the throttle somehow and I can't for the life of me figure out how to disengage the flywheel from that plate so I can turn the engine over again and test my spark plugs. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ed.

Remove flywheel nut and get a 3 bolt puller to pop the flywheel off. Something underneath is hitting flywheel magnet and pulling the armature plate clockwise, which is causing throttle position to drop toward idle..

Heyyy, thanks for replying. So, What does the armature plate do?

What could be hitting the armature plate to cause this? Is there something I can do without removing this very-difficult-to-remove-part?

anything that worked itself loose or mal adjusted can cause your problem .. may as well get yourself a puller and pull the FW

With the right tools the flywheel is off in minutes.-----You have to do it or pay $100 / hr for a shop to help you.

The above illustrated puller with inverted nylon nuts is probably the cheapest you will find. No.... it is not OEM stuff $$$ but works fine on small OBs . The inverted nuts will keep the depth of bolt insertion in the FW even and keep the bolts in place so you don't go loosing any.

yes that is what I have but the bolts you have in the kit don't fit the FW holes on top . Buy what you need (3) at the HW store with 3 nylon lock-nuts and some flat washers to keep the bolt heads from slipping thru the trianle opennings . Bend the flat washer 90 deg. on one side to fit them close up to the main shaft

If I recall you need 10 size 24 tpi bolts. buy the stainless steel ones CHECK THE SIZE...in case my memory is faulty!

"everything you read on Internet is true" ....Abraham Lincoln

wasn't 100 % certain which is why I said to CHECK THE SIZE...in case my memory is faulty! guess it was.

thanks for clarifying

Hi folks... I'm in possession of everything I need now to do this job. i'll be doing it today along with taking some pics so people can laugh at me... haha!

Just kidding... but seriously, taking pics and sharing repair experiences is what I figure this place is all about, so here goes.

When you have it all set up and a bit of tension on the puller giving the head of the puller bolt a moderate whack with a hammer can often break the flywheel loose without having to put to much pressure on the puller.

oookay.... so I got the flywheel off... pretty uneventfully... and I think I know what happened.

Inside the flywheel I found the key that inserts into the shaft was loose underneath the flywheel and wedged in between the flywheel itself and the magnet inside.

I also think I figured out how it got loose... the flywheel nut on top is super easy to loosen.

I'm going to upload pics in just a sec... I just need to figure out how to make this nut stay on... I suspect this is the reason it got borked to begin with.

Maybe somebody has had the flywheel off recently . I have seen where when one is fitting the flywheel the key is picked up by the flywheel magnets , begs the question tho why the flywheel was removed in the 1st place. Stick it back together and see how it goes 🙂

Yeah, I did put it back on... ran my drill on the flywheel and got it to turn over and then fire a few times. I'm suspecting a carb issue since it won't stay running, but it definitely is firing.

I think there might still be a coil issue as it really sounds like only the one cylinder is firing.

I'll test spark and compression again to be sure it's not a leak somewhere.
