Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Didn't get as much as I wanted to done today... At least I went and got stuff.

Found my spray gun to start painting again, guess I never really cleaned it since it was $15. It showed and was really clogged, so I'm probably going to get another $15 one and get a better one down the road. Also need to search Clist for a big compressor for the garage, but on the cheap.

Tried to get it done, then just quit and threw away the gun... Ohh well. BTW it looks way worse in person, that's why I stopped.

Then ran some tests. It's play sand so it's very fine. I'll let it dry and see how I like it. Far left is mixed in and the other two are sprinkled. Hmmmm.

Not sure if you have Lowe's but if you do this is the sand I used on my, should I say it, "Glasser" and it worked great.

Put down a coat a paint, sprinkled it on, let it dry, broomed it off, shot another coat of paint, Done. Feels good on the feet. Not too rough.
But then again, I am a "Glasser"

Thanks WNG, if the play sand doesn't come out then maybe I'll grab a bag of the rougher stuff like that or less fine however you feel like putting it. That is the more coarse stuff right?

But then again, I am a "Glasser"
Hey, you "glasser" guys aren't tooo bad :D ;) Very helpful guys if anything!
I was almost a glasser guy... Check my Imperial link in my signature.

----------------------

Forgot to add above, I need to let the epoxy dry a bit more before I can really sand it. I wasn't going anywhere on the small areas I wanted to knock down. That was with 80grit. Maybe I just need more patience.

I'll try to get a couple things done tomorrow, and then I won't have any more time till next week...

Can't believe that I said I would be in the water today or tomorrow, not gonna happen for a little while. Once the deck and paint is done, the wiring will hopefully be the fun part.

Do NOT use that aluminum rusto color. That stuff is HEINOUS. Had a guy on here do the whole inside of his boat with it. Looked horrible. Stick with grays.

"Play sand" nowadays is that brownish silica-free stuff that's safe for kids. I don't think you want this. Crap I got for my sons sandbox is ugly and has little rocks in it.

Yah, I'm with these guys. That aluminum color is no good.

The sand I got was the stuff sitting next to the concrete mix at the lumber yard. Fine and clean, good stuff.

OK so no aluminum color... Got it! :D I'll look around for the machine grays or just mix up some black and white. Thanks guys!

It's raining cats and dogs here now! It hasn't quit for a good hour or so and it's really bad. Roads are all flooded...

I did get a new gun from HF, guess they have a $3 tool warranty replacement. Should have gotten it this time, but still declined. Ohh well need to read about it more.

Also got some more coarse sand, made to mix with cement. I think this stuff will work much better! I'm going to sand my seams and lay down another coat of epoxy with the sand on top. Also if I can get my consoles painted and everything. I know it isn't good to paint in the rain but I need to get it done.

I'll let you guys know how thing go this evening :D!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

I had one the last time, but this one is much much better. They must have updated the $15 one cause it came with more stuff even.

As for spelling I always seem to read through my post AFTER I post it... That's my problem  then again I think I would lose too, ohh well I try to make my posts at least readable sometimes... :D

Taking a quick break, So far I have the consoles painted and half of the bow section. I gave up on the painting today cause I'll just finish outside when the weather is nicer. Also have half the deck done with sand. Much better with the stuff I got now and looking forward to it drying.

Not much more to go for today, then maybe I will have accomplished something.

Phew... I'm done for today.

Deck coating down... Doesn't look very pretty, tried to make it uniform, Paint should fix that... Will have to come back to sweep off some of my mistakes you can see there

Consoles painted. I'll finish up the bow section come next week. Along with the splashwell, and hopefully my topsides. All in one shot would be great. Maybe even the transom area too .
HPIM2432.jpg

Once paint is all wrapped up on the topsides I should be in calmer waters. I really hate cleaning the spray gun and everything to do with that thing...

So I guess some forward motion today... Doesn't look even 1/4 as good as others around here, but I'm trying.

It could be the angle or something...but your transom wood looks different than mine. It seems taller maybe?

Glad to see the deck installed, great progress:)

Progress man!:)

Yah, you can always toss in more sand in the thin areas to even things out when you are laying down paint.

Yup progress is great! :D.

I'm not sure why it looks like that. It's all the way down, and just needs at most 1/4" taken off in a couple spots. I need to mark everything first, then drill. Must be the angle.

Much needed progress. Really is nice walking on a solid deck instead of ribs...

Yeah if it looks terrible I'll just throw some more down. It should be decent except for that one spot I missed entirely that I didn't see untill I posted the picture... Ohh well it'll be covered up anyways.

As long as I don't slip and fall when the deck is wet I will be happy, and it'll be doing it's job even if it isn't perfect.

"Really is nice walking on a solid deck instead of ribs" ...... I'm so jealous. It's like walking a road-side sobriety test over here.

Looking good BG, before long you will be sitting in the boat on the lake with your favorite cold beverage and a fishing rod in your hand.

:D :D couldn't have put it any better! It was a royal pain. Had a couple times after I took out the transom that I almost flipped the boat in the garage because I forgot to strap it down

Thanks for coming by BigHoss!

Thanks Charlie! Lets just hope I didn't miss a spot...

Yeah I knew I needed to get a look on my rivets right away. I could have left it in, but my stringers had no rivets in them and basically came up with the deck itself.

Thanks Glen! That will be a good day for sure... I hope it's pretty soon!

------------------------------

Just got back home last night from another long weekend up north. Stayed at a friends cottage on a lake near Gaylord. Great time up there! Also spent some time on a jetski (47mph) so now I'm thinking about a jet system in the boat... Nah I'm just pumped to get her done!

If I have time today I may go and get a bit done. Not sure what all I will be doing. Just need to start getting things done, and order some stuff for electrical.

I'm thinking I may just get the basic wiring done, and the motor on and lower unit oil changed and go out. That is once my paint is all done and everything else is on that is important. I'll see what I can do. I've been trying to get the stripe template printed, but both of our plotters are down. Maybe this week (crossing my fingers)

Have a great, safe Memorial Day guys! And thanks to all of our troops out there that have served this country!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Great weather we are finally getting now! Just a bit too hot, and I see the other boats out and almost cry... Ok maybe not, but I wish I was out there too.

I was pretty busy yesterday and just got a quick glance at my paint job (needs another coat) and my texture turned out great. I think it will work fine!

Questions- Can I use the rusto clean metal primer on my sand/epoxy deck? I still have an almost full can that I already had to open and can't return.

Also are there any places that you have seen ruto Machine Gray, and the darker Machine gray? I may just mix my own or go up to Menards, but need to make sure I can get it there.

Thanks Guys! Hope everyone had a nice day yesterday!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Any objections to the questions above? About to go out and get my paint done, and maybe cut out the pieces for the consoles if I feel like it.

Temp is 90 degrees... I'm baking  better than 50's though. Just wish the boat was done now
