Looks real good BG, The leds really make it look cool at night. Sound like you had a lot of fun on your Northern trek.

Thanks Glen! I think they really make the boat stand out at night. I for sure had fun on the trip, sometimes a bit on edge because of it being my first time towing that far, but it went smoothly!

I scored a bit today! I got another 6 gallon tank! One of the old metal ones, and in really good shape. The price was even better... wait for it... FREE!! :D

Check it well for deposits & rust. Nice score on a tank!

Thanks I will Jb!

I think it's also sort of a good thing it had gas in it to the top, and that'll help. No way I will run the gas through the O/B but it's better than the tank sitting around collecting water or something.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

I just wanted to say I have read this entire post and it is going to be more help to me than you can imagine. Thanks for documenting all the steps you took. I was just given (by a good friend) a 1976 Starcraft SS 16' with an 850 Merc. It has been sitting for the past 10 years in a storage lot. I moved it to my backyard and intend on replacing the deck and buying/building seating. The hull is in great shape and the engine has been serviced. Any way I just wanted to say thank you. Here's a pic.

Welcome to the club 850merc! She should make a nice boat and she looks great as it is! Make sure you make a thread to show off your boat, and progress! Best of luck to you :D, and glad my thread could help you out a bit. You came to the right place for help on these old boats.

Love your boat! It is almost EXACTLY like mine! I love my boat as well as the rest that have posted on here.:joyous: My powerplant is an 85 HP Merc tho. I did not know what style it was so I'm glad I found out that its an SS. Her name is Norske Girl.

Some of you have said that these are good small water boats. I'll just say this, I've put mine on the Clearwater and Snake Rivers in Idaho this last June, 2012 during high water events/runoff. She handled it BEAUTIFULLY!

The four main projects that I have for my boat is 1) put on a top, 2) put on a 5 - 7 1/2 hp kicker, 3) put in a removable bow fishing deck, and 4) re-floor her. I will post pic's on her progress. Eventually, she will get re-painted.

Tons of awesome progress. I have those same speakers btw and they work great and are marine rated. I'd recommend them to anyone as they can be picked up on sale cheaply and are great quality.

If you're worried about the bottom paint and never want to do it again then try to get it back down to bare metal, give it a good cleaning, use Interlux Vinyl wash zinc chromate thinned 25% (doesn't take much of this stuff at all, Interlux ne2000 high build primer and sand, clean again and hit it with Interlux VC performance epoxy. I think I could beach it on rocks and that stuff would not scratch.

I was just reading through my thread and I didn't even know I had gotten responses! Sorry about that guys... Life has been crazy busy right now with working and school.

Welcome to the club FishingVandal! :D make sure to make a thread with your boat in it and your projects. I am just one of the many Starcrafters around here and there is so much usefull information around here.

Thanks sprintst! I appreciate it. The speakers rock, and they were an awesome price when I got them too. I just need to enclose my 6x9's in the back to protect them from whatever is back there.

Also thanks for the paint advice... not sure if I even have the want to redo it, and if I did I think all the paint would have to come off again and start from scratch. I think for now I'll just leave it and keep looking for a bigger boat ;)!

------------------------------

Well Happy New years guys! I've been trying to keep up with everyones projects and progress, but I've also been so crazy busy. I've slowly been buying stuff for the boat. I've got some more LED's coming, and I got a mount for the head unit. I've got a lot of finish stuff to do coming up and I really need to get to it all. I've got a bit of time though! :D I'll try to keep everyone updated with whatever happens!

I have my eye on a 1995 F250, and remembered that you picked up a similar vintage F150 not too long ago. How is your truck doing? The one I am looking at has the 7.3 Powerstroke with 240K on it, but the body looks pretty nice and clearly has been taken care of. Also, runs great. Probably overkill for a 16' Aluminum boat, but I think it will be nice for weekend/recreational use. Its a blue and white extended cab long bed with a non-matching red shell. They seem to be selling around $6500, but my friend is offering it for $4000. I think I am going to go for it, if nothing else I won't lose my shirt...

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

850Merc, That would be an awesome truck! I've got a 1994 F150 and it's doing good, but things are needing replacing (radiator, tie-rod's, mine had a bad trans) and what not but it's holding together. On mine I really don't like that it's lifted with the big tires... It can be so much of a pain and things wear easier. Also I really wish I had the solid axle and leaf springs up front (On f250's and 350's), rather than my coils and independent moving axles (can't remember the correct name). It's just easier to replace things and way more durable in my opinion. Other than that it's a great truck and has no problem at all with the boat!

That sounds like a fair price for the truck, and if it's a good friend you will know how it was taken care of. The 1995 powerstroke it an earlier version of the 7.3l and I think it's pretty good. 1994 was the first year of the turbo idi and that was good but not as good as a later model from what I have heard. If the price is right and it's been taken care of and isn't rusted out then go for it! It'll last and treat you good! Just know that if there is anything that needs to be replaced that the diesel version of the truck will almost always cost more. And they can be sometimes a pain in the winter with starting. Sorry if you know all this just thought I'd type out what I know.

Anyways, go for it if you feel that it's right and make sure you post pictures! I know for a fact that the 1994-97 versions of the trucks are really easy to work on and seem to last forever :D.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks for the info BG, I went and took a look at it on Saturday and its pretty darn clean. It has two small rust patched that will need some attention at some point, but I'm not too worried about it. I'll grab some pictures next time I see it. He said he wants to replace it with a Crew Cab version of the same truck, so I have to wait until he finds the replacement. He needs it in the mean time to tow his race car. My kids are young so they should have no problem sitting in the rear bench of an extended cab (maybe one day I'll be looking for a CC too).

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Yeah that would be an awesome tow rig! If the rust is in the cab corners that's really the only rust I worry about. Mine is starting to rust there and I need to fix it. Wheel wells are nothing. Just also check the underside too. And yeah the CC versions of the trucks are sweet! Young kids are fine for the back and I could fit back there if I had to (I'm 6' 2") but it wouldn't be comfortable. Should be good for a while though! Looking forward to pictures :D haha!
