Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Does anyone out there have any ideas/places where I can get carpet quickly? I have been looking around and haven't been able to find anything!

Did you check that place in Mt. Pleasant?

Last I was there they had a gigantic roll of it.

I forgot about doing that...! I remember you giving me all the details a while back now too. Thanks Jas! I will look into that. Only thing is it'll be a lot of trips with me cutting it and getting the binding done on my snap in. But that seems like my best bet.

I haven't really contacted any local stores because none of them seem to advertise marine carpet. I would hope one around all the lakes would... I guess I am not really thinking right . It's on the way for sure, I just don't know if I/We will be going up anytime soon. So much stuff to do!

OK I've got the carpet situation worked out sort of. I found out I have a friend who runs a buisness and can order me some :D. I also have started on the wiring of the boat. It is going pretty well with me just kind of messing around and getting stuff to work. It'll be decent but won't be perfect.

Also I broke down and bought some goodies for the boat... First I got an LED light string to go under the gunnel, and then I bought speakers and a head unit yesterday. Now I just need to figure out where to put them. If anyones got any links or ideas then please let me know because I don't know if I will actually have room...

Here's the speakers I got though. Pair of polk ausio DB651 6.5", and a pair of Polk DB691 6x9", and a Kenwood KMR 350U marine radio. Now I just need to install it all...

3rd post in a row sorry guys!

Here's what I came up with for the speakers, or at least the front ones, I think it'll work out nice. I am not going to take my time to seal these up. Just paint and install. They are sort of just to see if it will work.

Started out with a cardboard template. Then transfered to plywood. Came up with this.

Cut the hole for the speaker and test fit to check for a good fit.

And here is the other side and a better view. Not perfect and I am not the best doing this kind of stuff, but it works I think!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Ok here are some more updates. I worked around 12 hours on the boat today so if my writing doesn't make sense I am sorry... Also sorry for the cell pictures lately. I have been really busy.

Here is my fuse block underneath the dash. I need to add a breaker or main fuse before this though.

Here's the gauges all wired up. I still need to get the tach to work, and also the temp gauge sender.

I also played around with teh bench idea today and this is what I came up with. I won't be doing anything but painting it because I might not like the way it is and it isn't worth epoxying it.

Another of the bench support. I am by no means good at working with stuff, and there are lots of mistakes. IT works though.
2012-06-15_22-46-28_546.jpg

And the last one of the bench. I still need to figure out my back and how it will hinge. I had to stop for today though

Happy weekend guys! Looks to be a nice one to be out on the lake again!

I've been stewing about a bench/deck combo for my rig too - challenging stuff to build there.

I think what i threw together is pretty sturdy but would need some work to make it look pretty. Also needs a back, but I am out of wood :(.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

All the pieces I just made all have a coat of barn paint on them. I will say that it isn't marine but for waterbased paint it really holds up well. We have left pieces of ply painted out in the dirt for 3 or so years and they are still fine! I am going out now to Put the finish coats of rusto on them.

Happy Fathers day to all the fathers out there! :D

Another triple post here...

Stereo, speakers, and leds are all installed now! Bench is painted and installed, except for the back. Also now have switches for my bilge pump and all my lights. I have to say it is so nice to flip a switch instead of trying to touch two wires on the battery... Bilge pump also has the outlet on the side of the boat in now. I've done so much, and been so busy that I didn't get a chance to take pictures. I will have some soon!

Speakers!

Speakers!

Hey, '94, nice idea for locating the speakers by the consoles. Where did you put the other pair? I'm deep in the middle of restoring a 1983 18' Supersport and had pretty much figured that I didn't have room for speakers on the sides until I saw your idea. Pictures of the others would be fantastic.

Thanks and keep it up!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Hey guys! Sorry I didn't see your post till now. I had a full week of work around the 4th with firework shows, then this past week getting the truck, and boat ready to go for up north. That's where I currently am. Boat and truck here and it's going great :D. I am going to get more details and pictures up when I get back. It's been too crazy for me to try to do something that will make sense to everyone on here.

Thanks 180ss! Make sure you make a thread on here and post up about your boat! Everyone would love to see. The other 6x9's are located in my bench seat. They both face forward. I'll have to get a picture tomorrow, or see if I have one on hand.

With the boxes on the side behind the consoles make sure you put something behind it to tie it into the side panel. Mine have that, and then I put on a ton of 3m 5200 to hold them down to the floor and behind it. If you can wait I will post up a bunch about that when I get home this weekend!

"Soon" has come and gone!
 yeah it really has... I am sorry about that. I will have updates "soon" haha :D.

I got mine from wholesalemarine.com because I had a bunch of other stuff I was ordering from there. But iboats has the same exact one for cheaper I think. When I am home I will be able to link to that if you need me to.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Posting on my phone is a pain... I had a bunch typed out but it all just refreshed on my phone.

I am up north. Got up here no problems at all! It is great having the boat!

Here's the truck and boat stopped at a rest area outside of Claire. Cover needs to be secured in a better fashion.

And here is the boat at night with the rgb leds. I will have better photos and more details up when I am home!

So that will have to do for now. I promise I will have updates with good pics when I get home. Otherwise, the mob will be out to get me!!

Short term, in lieu of SC action pix, you can also disparage a glasser to keep the mob satiated;)

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Well I now have time to get everyone up to date on what's been going on! I'm going to split this up into a couple post's so it doesn't all blend together.

The trip up north was a success! Except for the last day when the battery was totally dead. I am sure that there is a problem with the charging system because my tach does not work. I will need to start figuring that out. I am also sure I just used the carp out of the battery blasting the radio and what not during the week. Towing the boat was easy, but the cover I will need to figure out an easier and faster way to secure it. Also needs to be less flapping around. I hate the feeling of people worrying it's going to come off. I want something tight and secure!

First off here are my 6x9" speakers in the back. The bench still isn't done. I am going to make the seat and back all hinge so it is easily removable. I want this to look nice, and right now it really doesn't because I threw it together.
IMG_0597.jpg

The bench top also needs some more support. I stand on it a lot to move around the boat and I don't want to be the one, or have anyone, break it.

Next my 6.5" speakers mounted.

IMG_0608.jpg

(pardon the wiring jungle, that is going to get cleaned up in a bit)

I made these just as prototypes to see how they would work. They are working great! I wish I took pics of how i did it, but I basically started with a cardboard template and then went from there. They work and that's all that matters right now. I'll clean up the 5200 on the bottom soon. They are secured with all 5200, there is a piece of wood ran behind them and that sort of ties it into the side panels. Then 5200'd on the bottom and some on the top and on that piece. So far, so good. But like I said I didn't make them to last because I didn't know my exact setup yet.

Last thing about the radio... Here is how my head unit is mounted...
IMG_0605.jpg

I hate it right now but I needed a spot for it. When I put in my aluminum dash panel for this side I will either make an enclosure for under the glove box or I will mount it in another spot. I am really unsure about this at the moment.
-----------------------------------------------
Here's my switches on the dash. I should have lined these up better and not have been in a hurry to drill...
IMG_0600.jpg

I need to tidy up some wires as you can see. And those lights do not go on. I found out that they would constantly be on so I scrapped even hooking them up. Unless I was doing it wrong...

Now for the led light pictures :D. These have been, by far, the thing that people really get pulled into the boat by. They look AMAZING at night!

IMG_0585.jpg

The pictures really don't do it justice at all! They light up the boat really well, and if I ever need to find something I can just change them to white. Only problem I've had with them is the adhesive on one side didn't stick well at all. So I had to get some better tape. Also the controller I got with them I either burned up, or it was crap. So I upgraded to a better one!

Untitled-2.jpg

More buttons = more fun! It really makes the lights so much more versatile with this controller. I love the slow fade with all the colors!

One more post...

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Well... bad thing about the boat is it's had a couple mishaps recently...

IMG_0609.jpg

Some pretty deep scratches...

Paint is coming off the bottom again...
IMG_0611.jpg

So I am honestly thinking that if I can get the boat off the ground and repaint the underside with mostly everything still attached, I will. This time I'll soda blast it and get down to bare metal. Or I might just touch it up. She won't be pretty, but it really bugs me. I knew this would happen because of all the paint that was on down there.
------------------------------------------------
And here are some sunset shots. This is so nice to be able to relax and watch the sunset!
IMG_0477.jpg

IMG_0570.jpg

One more picture to end it all. When I got home the truck got some love. Took some time and cleaned up the exterior a bit better.
IMG_0589.jpg

So there we have it. Hopefully everyone is caught up pretty good now! Any questions feel free to ask and I will try to explain what I can! Thanks everyone!
