Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Find WoodOnGlass's bench building thread in his signature line. He's been working on upholstery & construction for a while. My FireFlite had an available interior that included a removable bench rear seat that could then be used dock-side. He has adapted his plan/layout/construction to add the removable feature... Here's the Glastron brochure w/ an artist rendering:

It didn't come w/ much of a leg under it, but it seems to be working out for WOG on his blue flamingo build.....Totally removable for fishing, and easy to move if you need to get at the under splashwell area, gear, battery switch & etc

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Got a bit more done this weekend. Not pushing it into overdrive and really doing a lot, just more what I can and want to do.

Got the transom/splashwell taped off and painted. I suck at painting and I know it, but it looks a ton better than it did last summer.

Also got my new sidepanels cut and they have 2 coats of Rusto on them. Going to just leave them painted when they go back in.

Once I get my sidepanels back in I'm going to start working on my bench seat and figure that out. I'm getting closer... Also need to order my wire, and battery cables for the motor. Will 4AWG work for them? Thanks Guys! Hope everyones weekend was good!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Well I've been around, and busy at the same time. Finally got the truck title so I have been driving that. This summer is going to be filled with trips to the gas station...

As for the boat I've got a lot more stuff, but it all needs to get put on. I now have: new battery cables, marine wire, fuse block, tach, water temp gauge, trim gauge, steering bezel (20 degree), and a bunch of other stuff. Going to get a new battery soon, and switches and led lights are on the list along with speakers and a head unit. It's a lot of money, but I want this ready for the summer. I will get pictures of everything I've done up soon. I will be making my new dash panels tomorrow and that should turn out pretty nice.

Now for a question. Are there any places that you guys know of that sell marine carpet at a reasonable price and have it in stock? I need some for behind my side panels and up front in the bow.

Once again sorry for the lack of pictures... I will get on that because I know how much you all like them :D.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Happy Memorial Day everyone! Also a special thanks to all of the current and non current men/women serving our country! Thanks for everything you do!

Today I braved the extreme heat and got my new dash panels cut out of 1/16th inch aluminum. I think they turned out pretty good! I will zinc chromate them and paint them blue to match my topsides. They are way too bright if I leave them bare and brush them imo. Right now I am still playing around with my gauge arrangement, but this is what I am leaning towards.

Any opinions on the layout let me know. My switches are still up in the air because I am still planning out my wiring for the boat.

Also I asked earlier, but does anyone know of a decent place to get marine carpet? I really need some and I am running out of time. I guess I could special order some at Menards…

BG - are you stuck on carpet? Nautolex vinyl from this place is only $19/yard, 72" wide, less for 54" wide. A few Madians have used Nautolex from this place.

Thanks for the link GA! I think that might work ok for my sides and it looks like the price might be decent enough I will just have to check. Right now I am set on carpet for my floor because my boat will be a mainly tube/hangout boat and the floor is way too rough right now for the girls lol.

The Nautolex is great for clean up when a spill happens. Just hose it off.

Yeah that would be a major plus. I had vinyl on the floor before and I was iffy about it. I didn't mind it, but didn't really like it. Carpet might be the way I go except for the sides. Maybe do those with vinyl?

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks for the link teamster. I'm really just trying to stay cheap and fast... don't know how I'm going to do that though

Ok so what I posted above for my dash will be what I'm going with. It looks nice with the steering wheel there, and should work nice. I'm busy with work the next couple days then I will cut out holes for my gauges and mount everything. I need to get going on everything here because I am running out of time! Not too much more and I can be on the water again.

I got my carpet from Home Depot's web site. "Lancer Marine Carpet". Ended up getting like a 20' roll for less than I would have paid for the 16' or so the job required. They were running a free shipping deal at the time so I had them throw in the 6700 adhesive and notched trowel as well.

Thanks Ez I may end up getting that. What kind of backing did it have? I kind of need a heavier rubber backing if I use it for my snap/velcro in carpet.

Well guys I think I will let this photo do all the talking for today. I will have a bigger write up later on and more pictures to keep the mob at bay.

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Well I will try to write up what I've been up to the past couple weeks. I've been lurking around here a bit, and working on various things. I did get the boat back into the water again yesterday, and it felt great and it felt way more solid this year than ever before. It was also nice towing with something that actually is meant for towing. I said earlier it's a 1994 F150 4x4, I replaced the trans myself and it works great now! So much nicer to go to the launch with.

Here are the seats I bought. It is so nice to be able to have a sturdy seat to sit on so it doesn't feel like you're going to fall out. I actually guessed right with my backers in the deck too. They hit almost all the holes.
IMG_0228-1.jpg

Motor and splashwell look nice all sealed up and painted one color.
IMG_0222.jpg

Got a new marine battery from Costco.
IMG_0224.jpg

New aluminium dash panel with gauges. Still need to hook up my tach and water temp gauge. Also need switches.
IMG_0227.jpg

New sidepanels.

Overall I am glad everything is starting to come together. Next I need to find carpet still, and wire and a couple other random things and she is set for the year.

This drawing is what it is but hopefully you get my gist. aluminum frame coverd with Ply or 2x2's Epoxy coated wood, 1/2" plywood and you could Paint or Try out your upholstery skills. Folds forward to give access to gas tanks and battery plus gives 10-12" storage box. Just my idea. For what its worth.

Thanks very, very much for the drawing WNG! That is almost what I was thinking about doing. I think I might make the frame out of wood for right now and I can always change it if I need to. Unless I can find a decent price on aluminium right now... I am going to start playing around with the bench tonight.

Check with the scrap yards, sometimes you can find some good deals on square aluminum tubing there. 2x2 Douglas Fir would not add that much weight and if you epoxy coat it and oil base paint it, it will last a LOOOOOONG time. Heres a pick of the bench I made for my boat and the "Feet" I made to keep it off the Deck.

Thin backing. Wouldn't be suitable for snap-in at all.

Thanks for the help WnG! :D I still think I might just go with painted wood and make sort of a proto-type for the time being just to see how things work out. It's great to have something to go off of though, thanks!

Ok thanks EZ I am glad I asked because I need to find some with a rubber backing for my snap in. I am running out of time .

Does anyone out there have any ideas/places where I can get carpet quickly? I have been looking around and haven't been able to find anything!
