I have been waiting for a while to get time to finally get onto redoing the boat. It's finally come! :) Time to start the reno! wooo

If you haven't heard the story, and you feel like reading here are the links:
The finding of the boat
Picture Thread and first splash

Here's a quick sum up for the whole story. I got the boat in May for $1500. Seller contacted me from my ad on Craigslist. I splashed it already, ran good. Then things have started breaking on it(which is a given). So I got some good use out of it this year, but things bugged me whenever I had it out.

Here are a couple pictures to start the thread.

I hope to have her all done by next spring. I sure know this is the right place to come for help. This is going to be a ton of work and time, but I think it will be worth it in the end when I enjoy the boat even more.

First update coming next!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Ok first update. Today I got to geting the wiring and controlls off of the motor so I can lift the motor off soon, hopefully this week! By the way these are bad cell phone pic's, I couldn't find the camera at the moment.

I have found the issue to the "I can't turn off the motor" issue. A bad ground cable.

I actually ended up slicing up the cables a bit when trying to get them out of the 20 layers of electrical tape and tubing. Which you can see below.

Ok now one question. How do you get the steeing system off? I might ask in the Johnson fourm, but thought I would ask here first. Here's a picture.

Hope everyone is having a great Sunday! It's really nice out there!

Nice boat! Same paint scheme as mine, just in blue. Are you going to repaint? If so, will you keep it original looking?

I started redoing mine on Labor Day. You will find they come apart quicky. Good luck and i'll be keeping an eye on you thread.

And yes, it is very nice out there today. Where are you located? I'm in Allendale, just west of Grand Rapids.

Disconnect (remove) the steering linkage bar from the cable, remove the big nut on the steering cable and "in theory" the cable slides out however...........

You might need a brass drift or block of wood with a hammer to nudge it along and in some cases.........

You might need to unbolt the motor and move the motor further away to get the slack required to remove the cable

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks Bob. I will try that out soon enough. I kinda looked at it and found out how to do most of it, but wasn't sure it I had to hit it or what. I think i'm going to have to get it the rest of the way out while it's hanging in the air coming off because there is no slack at all.

Nothing more to report. Got the garage cleaned up better, and made some new saw horses so that I can make the engine stand. Hopefully tomorrow I will get to that.

Another 16' SS resto, nice:) Waterford sure does have TONS of lakes. I lived in Farmington Hills and worked in Walled Lake for a bit. Nice area for boating to say the least.

I had fun with mine all summer after putting in a new deck last winter. I will be removing my outboard and rebuilding the transom this winter too, good luck on the rig:D

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks Guys!

Well not much once again today. Still cleaning up the garage and getting everything put away for winter. I did get to making the engine stand. Slaped it together in about an hour with some scrap I had laying around. I went off of dh4winn79 outboard stand plans a bit(thanks), but sill differed since it's only temporary and had a lot of scrap. Here's a bad cell phone picture.

Maybe just maybe I'll be geting the outboard off tomorrow. :)

Well a bit more progress today. I got the engine off!

Starting to come off

Off and onto stand(sorta)

I wasn't able to get the holes drilled into the stand so it's still hung on there with the comealong. I'll try to get it put on better thursday. I have no idea how i'm going to move this thing around. I also need to get the garage cleaned up better before I go any further.

You could put some casters on the bottom of that stand to roll it around. Careful it doesn't tip over!!

I'll probally put some casters on it or some wheels I have. Just didn't get to it :( . Engine is just resting on it for right now, while still hooked up to the comealong. It won't be going anywhere for a bit. I really need to finish up the garage before anything else can happen though. I just had the urge to get the motor off tonight :). Tipping over would suck though

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks EZ, I will probally pick one up.

Well I'm still cleaning and getting stuff put away right, so not much to report on the boat. I did end up puting some lawnmower wheels I had onto the engine stand. So that is now put away so I can get the boat into the garage. Here's another boring picture.

It's right next to the old OMC I pulled out of the old boat. Thank god I got rid of that thing .

That's it for now. I'm really hoping to start geting the boat taken apart next week or so if I can get it into the garage...

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Today I got around to finishing up the garage. Finally! I would have loved to do it yesterday, but I was in East Lansing cheering on the Spartans! 10 and 1 :D Go Green! Ok pictures of what I got done.

Backed the boat straight into the garage. I will actually have some room to work on it!

Wow this was close. Glad that I have the outboard off otherwise it wouldn't fit.

So that's it for now. Progress is being made, I guess. I'm not sure if i'll get to the boat this week with the holidays. Have a great week everyone!

I did make it to the boat this week! I started geting things taken apart, and put away. I started with the wiring and controlls, and then moved onto the windsheild, and bow rails. I even got the drivers side consel out!

There's no turing back now. :)

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!
