Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

Thanks, I meant she liked the fall pix, and she wants to drive over the mountain here to see some fall color here.

Be a bit before I can head all the way to Nova Scotia, but thank you for the generous offer.... WV is 1/2 way down the eastern US from you, feel free to swing by the boat yard anytime as well :)

Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

So I spent the morning constructing my transom clamps. It only took me about 3 hours to put them together and about 6 weeks to figure out how they actually work. It seems that I over thought the process. They are very cool tools for sure. I get everything set up and in place. The resin, silica, hardener. I had to cut my own fiberglass strands, I couldn't buy them anywhere. As Wood suggested I set up a sample of resin and silica and found a nice thickness. So I went for gold. I did one quart at a time, mixing resin, silica to a nice thickness, then adding some fiberglass strands. Once it was all nice and mixed, I added the hardener. Mixed it all in and while I poured this mixture out my mixing partner started the next batch. My only worry was the amount of hardener. I lost many nights sleep over this. I'm so use to using epoxy that now I fear I've been ruined for poly. Anyway I got it troweled on both the new transom ply and the skin of the transom. The fiberglass strands were a bit clumpy at first but as I troweled away they seem to let go and spread out. So I have the wood in place and all clamped up nice. But now I wait and worry. It's been some time and although the fiberglass feels to be thicker, it's not hardening like I expected. My worst fear is that I did not use enough hardener. I put a couple of extra logs in the wood furnace right behind the boat. lol. Waiting...............

Looks good to me TC...the resin changed color? I have noticed it will change color with hardener..I use this to make sure I have things mixed good enough...if I see uniform color I stop mixing..what are the temps in the shop? I had some filler last few times seem like it would never kick...let it go over night, next day it was hard as cement...

Just a little over a tablespoon per quart. I sent you a PM. If you used 2 teaspoons per quart you're fine. In cool temps You could go to 3 tsps per quart or 20 cc's. It may take all day/night for it to set HARD but it will. No Worries!!!!

No worries is right, Wood. I just came in from the garage and it's hard as steel. Phew. I worry too much. And trooper, your right, it does change. It's now a grayish colour. Guys, I got to say, I was nervous. But now I know I can do the rest with no problems.

Nice work TC ! I have yet to do a wood transom repair , maybe next project in 2 or 3 or 4,5,6 years from now ... I would worry that I used to much hardener and it would go off before I got every thing clamped .

That was my biggest fear. Not having enough time to get the thing in place. I was sweating for awhile.

Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

Well, after some thought and consideration, I've decided that I will store my boat for the winter and finish it in the spring. I can gather all my supplies over the winter and get 'er done in the spring. I've had a couple of set backs that has made my decision easier. My Lady Bug had to have surgery last week to remove a very large tumor and it's taking a little longer healing. Then I went yesterday to get some resin from our only dealer in this area and they closed before their closing time. I found them very unfriendly anyway and nearly lost my mind when I got there yesterday and they were closed. So, I'm now behind another two weeks and have to find another fiberglass distributor. I can't believe that living near the ocean that there is only one dealer. I'll have to bring it in from either the U.S. or Newfoundland.

So today I wheeled it in the garage and brought in the cap and set it back on. This was good anyway, to do a fit, and see what's what. I had to actually cut a piece of wood from the transom to get it back on. Put everything inside and put in the garage to rest. So now I can spend the winter getting supplies and getting the upholstery re-done.

I'll start as soon as I stop crying.

Sorry to hear about the surgery. God Speed on the recovery. Resin Suppliers in Canada seem to be an issue. Must be the Gubbament and all their regulations concerning the environment. You might check these guys out for your resin needs. They're located in Richmond, BC. Not sure of their prices but some guys on another forum said their products are good as well as their prices. Not sure about shipping.

Thoughts and prayers for a full and speedy recovery...

May your glassing supplier woes be diminished to nothing but a faint memory...you WILL find a courteous, low priced, close by supplier soon, I just know it.

We must be getting our stuff from the same place . The guy and his son that I usually get my resin from always act like they got a stick up a bad place ! Sometimes I just don,t get people .. Luckily I have other options close by .
Hope the Mrs starts to feeling better TC !

Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

Thanks for the well wishes. Things are better and she is healing very nicely.

I've already scouted out a fiberglass place. In another province where I lived before. A 5 gallon jug of resin is 45 dollars cheaper, so that should take care of any shipping charges. I have no time for rudeness, especially when it comes to customer service. If I don't get good customer service I will never spend another nickel in that place. I like to shop local to support local business but I won't tolerate bad service. Kind of a pet peeve. I have a few of those but I won't get into them here. I would get writers cramp..lol.

On the upside, I now have all winter to get supplies, plan my build and get my upholstery re-done. And to watch all of you getting your boats looking awesome.

Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

Well, I found a supplier for my resin and cloth. A small boat place in Chester here in NS. And it's cheaper than what I was paying. Awesome. He's only 30 minutes from here and I get there time from time working so it will work out great. I've seen this place a few times driving past it and decided to drop in and see him. He was working on a 1958 wooden Peterborough boat. It was very nice. I wish I had the nerve to ask for a pic but didn't want to annoy the guy seeing that this was my first time in. Very nice guy and this place has been in the family for decades. He knew what he was talking about for sure.

On another note, I just wanted wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a great holiday. I hope Santa finds you all and treats you all like Admirals. You guys are awesome and I consider you all friends. One day I hope I get to meet you all.
