Yeah, well I restored my old metal tanks and they were filled with debris and the pickup tube screen was BAD. I Pull the tube each season and clean the screen and flush the tank with a piece of chain and Boiling water and dish soap and I still get crap out of it.!!!!! Hopefully in a couple of years it'll be clean!!! Any whoo here's and Evil Bay Link for the filter.

TC, glad to see it in the water and it looks sweet!

I have taken old metal tanks and ran a steam jenny into the tank. The pressure blows loose any rust or grime in the tank and the super heated water/ steam heats the tank, so when you roll it over to drain it, all of the moisture evaporates.

They have a "Glass" kit, available at most auto parts houses and on the internet that you can mix and pour into the tank, rolling it around, it will coat the bottom of the tank, then...

with everything encapsulated in glass, you will never have any issues again.

The Glass inline fuel filter that Wood posted is by far the very best filter you can get. I have used them for years and they are a breeze to clean out or change the elements on. They come in a pack of three.

So i went for another rip tonight. I replaced the fuel line last night and put it on muffs for a few minutes. I had a bit more debris on the strainer. I cleaned it up and tonight she worked perfect, until the end. It started to stumbled when I gave it gas then would stall. Eventually it died again. I haven't look but it acted the same way so I know I have more debris. It must be coming from the fuel hose on the take. So I will have to pick up another hose.

Again I couldn't get to WOT because I experienced prop spin again. I'm not sure what's up with that. I will have to investigate further. I will have to try putting it down one hole. Not sure why I'm losing traction..lol.

She looks good though.

A little air guitar, or paddletar. This is becoming a common occurance

WOW!!!! I am just speachless!! FANTASTIC TC!!

I can play almost anything on that. Right now however, I would like to spank the Gypsy with it. Not a good day working on the boat. My mother told me there would be days like this but she didn't tell me how many. No matter what I tried to do, nothing would fit or wrong size or wrong part...:frusty: LOL. However, tomorrow is another day and I'm hoping to get back on the water again.

The last time out the motor acted like the other times. It started right off,ran good for a bit. Then it would start to stumble a bit when you give it a bit of gas. Then after about an hour it would just quick and not start. I got home and parked it in the garage. I went out yesterday and took off the filter cover and it was clean. There was no rubber pieces like before. I took the tank apart and checked the pickup. Clean as anything. I put the gas through a strainer, no debris. The bottom of the tank is clean. Now I'm wondering to myself, what is wrong with this motor? I am going to replace the fuel hose on the tank today and see if anything changes.

Also, I was lucky enough to get a hub kit for my prop. However I took my prop off and and I can't see how this kit is going to fit. And I couldn't see any sign of prop spin. Wouldn't the hub in it now show signs of spin? I have pics of the prop and kit. The serial number on the prop tells me it's a Merc prop and the kit is made for this prop, at least I thought so. On the instructions that came with the hub kit there was a paragraph there about over ventilation. The engine breaks loose allowing the engine to over rev before reaching plane- there is too much air being drawn into the propeller blades. Could this be my issue? Then they talk about different plug sizes in the vent hole in the prop, but I don't have such hole. I'm scratching my head so much my hair is coming out in clumps....LOL. Buy a boat they said. It will be fun they said...

TC - Your original prop has a pressed in hub and only a prop shop or someone with the right tools can change it. The hub kit you got is for a prop where the owner can change the prop using the hub kit. It won't work with your existing prop.

Before spending more money on props/kits, try this. With a marker, draw a line at each of the three thinga-ma-bobs (vanes? having a mental block) to the center of the hub. When you take the Gypsy out the next time and experience the dropping out of gear, check to see if the lines are still perfectly aligned. If they are, you are having cavitation problems. If the line are akimbo, the prop hub is slipping and time for a new prop or a prop rebuild. Or get a prop that matches the hub kit you already have.

Hope you get the motor running reliably and the prop slip issue fixed - Summer is drawing to a close.

Thanks GA. Yes, summer is coming to a close and as expected I'm using the remainder of the year to get the bugs out of this so hopefully, next spring I can be ready for a full season of fishing and boating. Thanks again for the advice and I will do what you said. Your tips and suggestions, like most on here, are priceless. I expected to go today but we have high winds today so I decided to put it off until next weekend.

Okay, so I pulled the coils from my triple 650 and grabbed what I thought was the best looking coil from my 850. I fired it up and it ran the same it always does. I will get out on Saturday and take her for a rip. See what happens....fingers crossed. With all new gas lines, hoses and coil changes, I really hope that I find something...

Boating season for me is officially over. Went to the lake yesterday and she wouldn't even start. I brought it home and pulled the plugs. All four have water/oil mix.:mad2::violin:
Any thoughts??? Don't be shy...

Just an update. I havent' been on this much. The boat is put away. I took the 850 off and put the 650 back on. I thought I might get one more run in but the cards were not in my favour. It started right up, this after sitting for a couple of years. It started on the first kick of the starter and ran perfect.... for about 3 minutes, then ran rough and was getting worse. So I turned the key off and parked it. I took the 650 back off and now I have to decide on what to do. Either way, I have to remove the power head off of both motors. I do know that the 650 needs a rebuild and that's it.. The 850 needs lower end work, still not running right, etc. OR, I can put a search on for something different. I do light the late 70's Evinrude, perhaps a 70hp or 85hp... hmm. Anyway time will tell. Tick Tock.

That really bites that you've had so much motor trouble. I know how aggravating it can be when your outboard doesn't want to behave. The boat looks great though.

I've said it many times...I ain't no Mek-a-Nek sooo can't help much. I do know enuf that water in the fuel is usually a head issue. I was fortunate enuf to get my 85 Johnson running well at the end of the season and I'm looking forward to the start of next season. I wish you well with your motor issues.

What year is that 650?

Edit: Nevermind, I see you have a 76 which is darn near the same as my 75. I'm not exactly sure what your symptoms are but if you are getting water in the cylinder, it's coming from one of two places (or both). There is a baffle plate and an exhaust plate on the port side of the motor. The gaskets can leak. Getting them off can be a bear but I have done it so if you need help, let me know.
Also, the lower seals can leak. Sounds like you are planning to pull the powerhead anyway so if you do, go ahead and replace those seals. While your in there, check your lower bearing. If it's bad, replace it too. I have done this as well and can help you out if you need it.
Outside of that, have you performed a compression test?

Hey Mike, Good to hear from you as always. It's been a challenge and a test of patience. I got to big motors and both aint worth a lick. At least not right now. My mind changes like the wind, one minute I say rebuild, next minute I say buy another.... Who came up with this boating stuff anywho???

It's confusing, this issue. Too many motors. lol, The 650 has 2 cylinders down on comp. They read like this. 120, 110, 95. The 850 has perfect compression. I think maybe 10lbs difference between the 4 cylinders. Just getting water in the cylinders. I think my best bet is to , for now, have the 650 rebuilt. And I don't mean tear it down, replace a couple of rings and that be it. If I'm going to rebuild, I'm going gung ho. All new pistons, rings, cylinders either honed or bored, etc. I only want to to this once. In the meantime, I have decided to redo my trailer over the winter as well. I have a Holsclaw with 4 coil springs and 2 shocks. Lol. So I will be juggling between the two projects. \Thank you for the input, it all helps... I will fix this 850 in time, it's just that it has more issues than just the water.
