Re: 1978 Venture Phase V bass boat, new deck and transom - first timer

Today I glued the transom in with pb, and the stringers with pl. The transom went really well. I wiped it all with acetone and mixed a slow batch of pb and spread it with a drywall knife on the transom skin, then clamped it tight. I ended up buying some c-clamps to get the edges of the transom. They worked great with some wood on each side to spread the load.

We'll see tomorrow, but I'm concerned about my stringer fit. It just didn't seem like they were close enough to the hull. I used some rubber 1/8" tile spacers that I had from a tile job, pl'd them in every 4 inches or so along the stringer pockets.

Then I put a bunch of pl down. I put the port stringer in, and lifted it out to see if there was enough. There was just a little on the bottom here and there, so I packed another tube (28oz) and loaded the stringer channel with more pl. I got alot more contact, but I guess we'll see tomorrow. The dry fit always felt ok, but it's hard to tell

If I can rip em up by hand tomorrow they are coming out and I'm losing the pockets, and re-fitting the stringers. I'm glad I cut them extra big now for sure. Sorry, no photos, it was a long day and, lots of trips to HD, lowes etc, for this and that. Tomorrow's gonna be huge I want to lay it all up wet, all at once, except the upper deck.

I'll have to take a closer look for wires holes tomorrow, it's not a thru-hull, that's for sure.

By the way, has anyone tried fiberglass dust as a mix for PB? Recycling it, I'll try a small test tomorrow...

A thru hull doesn't show thru the hull..... It projects the sonar thru the hull so you don't have any holes.

Today started off good, but then it got shi** pretty quick. Basically, supplies I ordered Sunday from USC are now set for a Friday pickup, instead of a Thursday delivery. The reason being, I called USC and expressed that I needed them asap so I wanted to pickup instead of waiting on delivery - she emails and said it's now a Fri. Sorry customer service, but I wouldn't have done that, and now USC says no more changes. They are in FL and I'm in GA, WTF?

Last time it took two days to get it, I figured it'd be the same. Wrong. This might F*** me.

The good part.

Got to the shop and checked the transom mount. SOLID. Checked the stringers, SOLID, they are in there good, I was over concerned.

3 DAYS LEFT

Seems like I need to grind here and there every day, so it's perfect right now in GA in the morning, the tyvek suit is just tolerable until about 11am, then it gets warm enough to poly.

Then I chalked and cut the stringers. Mine are low, this is a bass boat, so I did a dry run with the circular saw and there was no way it was going to work. There were clearance issues and sight issues, I could see the blade. So I decided sawzall was the way to go. Unfortunately I was out of sawzall blades and had to head off to HD. Oh yea, HD has 3/4 Arauco for $29 a sheet. WHAT! Lowes is $$41 ($38 with my 10% off coupons-HD takes em too).

I was nervous as hell about it, but it was the next step, no other direction to go.

I finished off my first 5g of poly. I can fit the deck tomorrow, and get it all set, who knows maybe UPS will come through for me, positive thoughts, positive thoughts....

Here are the stringers with 1708 on one side, I did the outer side of each one. Then I laid a piece if 1708 on the port and starboard stern flats. Venture had 24oz there when I tore it up and it came up easy, I'm interested to see how good my bond was.

I'm re-building this the way the factory did it, but I wonder if I shouldn't have cut the transom to go all the way to the bottom, seems odd it's in two, but that's how they had it.

Thanks Trooper, that 1708 is a dream. One thing I found is that running my roller and/or the short-cut chip brush in the direction of the 45 really helped it absorb the poly and eliminate bubbles quickly. I'll keep checking UPS, as soon as it hits ATL they should be able to stop it, it should be on the dock in the am...it will be on the dock dammit.

Happy to hear everything stuck! I just hate trying to glass over that edge left by the channel.... If there's a void in there it can trap water.. I had to deal with a few spots under the bow that I had to leave some glass... I PB'ed and feathered the edge for a smoother transition. Kinda like spackling.

PB is a mixture of resin cabisol and milled fiberglass fibers mixed to the consistency of peanut butter

PL is PL construction adhesive

1708 is a biaxal fiberglass cloth with csm stitched on the back of it.

PB = Peanut Butter (Polyester Resin thickened with Cabosil and Chopped Milled 1/4" fiberglass fibers)

PL =Polyurethane Construction Adhesive

1708 = Biaxial Woven Fiberglass cloth (17oz biaxial woven cloth with 8 oz of Chopped Strand Mat(CSM) sewn to the back of it) Very strong and due to the way it's woven, it is very easy to make it conform to irregular shapes.

Going back "Factory" is usually the best way to go. In your case, I think I agree with the premise of making it all one piece. Having said that, I KNOW your glass work is much better that what was done at the factory so I'm sure it will be fine and even beter and stronger than before. Nothing at all to worry about. You are doing some nice work here. Impressive enthusiasm and energy. Keep up the Good Work!!!!

1708 is fiberglass cloth, and CSM is chopped strand mat usually 1.5oz.

You will see these abbreviations all the time. You might want to start reading some complete restorations and see what you are in for. It's no joke, safety equipment is a must and it's a hard job with lots exact measurements. I'm double/triple checking cap/hull fit before I cut the wood for the deck, it's got to be right.

Read almost anyone's experience who has posted on my rebuild and you'll find tons of information, click on the link at the bottom of the post and you find it. That's where I learned.

Multiple drywall tools have been in use here, all sizes and it spreads way easier than mud. I also took fiscoboater's advice and bought a couple $1 metal spoons from walmart to spread the pb for the fillet, then I laid the 1708 when started to kick. I didn't grind anything from those channels, so I didn't glass it. I thought about it when I was doing it, but too late then.

Thanks WOD, I'm going to get up super early and put on my happy voice with UPS and see what I can do. If that doesn't work I'll hang up and call again, then repeat.

I call it the "depends on who you get" factor. Incredible what one person can do when the prior said it was impossible. Airline industry especially.

Re: 1978 Venture Phase V bass boat, new deck and transom - first timer

HI Guys: Thanks for the information as to what the abbrevations are! What is your source for the 1708 cloth? I have a supplier for the resin and glass flour but don't think it has the short strands in it.
Been working on ther trailer since I got the boat off it.Have it sand blasted and painted and willl replace the tires and wheels with 14 inch instead of 13's I had a blow out on the trailer coming from Nashville to winchester.Ha Tires rotten.I will need engine as I took the old Merc 115 to shop and they said 1200 to repair so I will look for a later model engine somewhere between 60 and 90HP as I don't need a bigger engine as I will not be racing for any weigh in at tournments. See Ya,Bill Thanks and keep info coming

YES! Just got back from UPS with all my supplies to finish. I called UPS four times last night hoping someone would pull the right strings to get my packages and they all said the same thing, not until Friday.

So I just drove over there this morning and acted like they were supposed to be there now, and they went and got em. Took 40 minutes, but way better waiting until than Friday. Off to the grind I go!
