Re: 1978 Venture Phase V bass boat, new deck and transom - first timer

Today I built a motor stand - 90%, ran out of screws, and am putting cap in the air tomorrow, so I'll have a box full of screws, and money is that tight right now. The stand is for a 1966 johnson meteor I found. The plan is to test it and see if it'll run, then determine if it's worth fixing or parting it out. I got a mechanic friend who can fix anything, he's never seen an outboard motor and had it all figured out in about 7 minutes while it was on it's side. I started a thread in motors to talk about that though.

This afternoon I started to bring the cap in to hang and eventually rivet, but then decided it'd be much better to paint the interior bow before putting the cap over it. I went with oil based enamel, gloss white with a foam roller , two coats. This is the interior that was previously carpeted. I'm anti carpet in a boat, why anyone ever thought that was a good idea is beyond me.

More progress! I have until Sunday to get this boat trailer ready. Which also means I need to work on the trailer.

Cap repairs:

The seat mount wood was rotten, so I replaced that with two 3/4" plywood. PB'd it, clamped it and then glassed it in. Not easy to glass something from underneath, but it's solid.

more pics to come.

Some old gas/oil that was in the tank - eats that purple insulation foam for breakfast.

They had screws all around the deck in these, I'm not going that route, I think I'll sand and glass it in. It'll make taking the cap off a nightmare, but I don't plan on ever taking it off again.

I'm going to cut the overlap off and re-glass the spalshwell today.

Back at it hard today. I gotta be outta there by end of day tomorrow.

I started off by riveting the cap on then the rub rail, 192 total. I've never really used a rivet gun before, I bought the two handle type available at N. Tool for $20, worked great, you can apply force easily and cinch it up tight.

The rubber for the rub rail went on smooth until I got to the end and it didn't reach. I gave a good tug but no way it was stretching that much-about 2 feet. So I pulled it out and attached the two ends at the stern, then stretched it over the rail, perfect. I also soaked it in the sun for about 4 hours while I was putting the rail on, which helped a ton.

I cut the old overlap off after debating it in my head to pb it and keep it, there was about 1/4-1/2 gap. I decided to cut it out. Then I did 2 layers of 1708 and one csm to complete the splash well.

I also finished my trailer minus adjusting the bunks. I ended up sanding it with a wire brush attachment on my grinder. Priming, and painting. It was quick and dirty, not the best job but it looks 100% better, sorry no photo, I'll get one tomorrow. Have a great weekend everyone, it's hot here in Atlanta, make me wish for the days of February.

Wow! just awesome, Bro...you have done an amazing job on this boat...First class all the way...

BTW, I just noticed the name on the side of the boat..."Silver Streak"...reminds me of the movie of the same name...

Ha ha! I know, love that movie! Don't think I'm keeping the name though. Watching your thread close, great tips about the gloves and TP, I've used 200+ gloves so far.

Thanks GT! Unfortunately shopping doesn't mean buying just yet, unless I can find a super steal of a deal. Had one come and go before I could get to the bank. So I'll lie in wait on Craigslist for the next one.

Here's how it sits today...and will for a few days, I need some time away from that thing.

Wow, looks so close to being ready...just an engine away from getting it finished up...

What is it rated for? a 90, 115, 150?

The plywood I see as the deck in the pic...it is sealed up, Right?

I don't recall did you do all the basic electrical already?

Also, make sure you keep it jacked up real high in the front to keep any water from standing...if you have to, get a cinder block to put under the jack wheel, and obviously pull the plug...

Thanks for the tips, I'm working on getting it to storage lot asap, and will build a pvc tent to tarp. I appreciate the reminder to set the trailer high, probably wouldn't have thought of it until it was raining.

It's rated for 180hp, bow to stern is 18ft, and it's 91" wide at the stern. It looks like it'd be very stable on the water.

I still need to fit my drain and install all the bilge pumps and batteries. I got a brass drain tube, and a snap rubber seal, but out of the boat the snap seal doesn't work at all, it just falls out, so I'm considering a getting a drain that you unscrew instead. I'd hate to install the brass and have it not work.

The deck was layered underside with one layer csm, then it was bedded in PB and tabbed with 1708, then two layers of csm. It's 3/4 aruco ply.

Re: 1978 Venture Phase V bass boat, new deck and transom - first timer

Sweet a 180...hopefully you'll find a nice 175 in perfect condition for very little money...the way you have built it up, you might even find a nice 200 that weighs about the same as a 175...that would be like...woooooooo....

Defintely looks like a nice stable platform, plus it is built to better than factory standards...

The reason I asked about the deck, is to make sure you have at least a coat of resin on it, so that if it happens to get wet, it won't have any adverse effects...

Those snap rubber seals can be threaded into themselves to make a tighter fit, kind of like a rubber expansion plug...But...

I found a plastic screw in drain for my bilge at BassPro...it is designed so that you can unscrew it to open it, yet the actual plug stays in place...here's a couple of pics of mine

Another tip I got from 'woodonglass' is to drill the drain hole oversize, say you have a 1" drain plug...drill the drain approximately 1-3/4" to 2" with a hole saw...fill that with PB, then redrill it for the drain plug...coat it with resin inside to seal it up, that way there is no way water could ever seep into the wood...check back on my thread for some pics...

That is looking might good the VCaptian.

Don't know if you built your PVC tent yet, but if you look towars the latter part of my thread, I have what I think is the easiest, strongest solution.

Here is a pic.. Used Rebar to drive into the ground and put the hoops over the rebar. pull some plastic over it and I rolled 2x4s up the sides to help hold the plastic down in the wind. Just one 'backbone across the top to hold the 'ribs' together.

Make the hoops or ribs like I did in the lower part of picture. Much stronger than the top. each hoop is a 10' pvc pipe and 2ea. 5' pvc pipes coupled together.
