Re: 1979 Imperial

All righty then... Since my boat only had one stringer down the keel, I'll reproduce that aspect base on all the advice from my iboats brethren. But since I do not have a 15' piece of 3/4" ply, or 3/8" ply so I can fabricate a laminated single stringer like Gus did, is it cool so sister joint two pieces together? I was thinking about cutting a sheet of 3/4 in half, and sandwiching the two butt jointed ends with PL and 1/4" ply... Would overlapping the butt joint on each side by 12" be enough? Thank again for all the great advice...

Sounds absotively, posilutely A-OK 2 Mi...;)

If you want it to dry quicker, you could use Titebond III and be ready for install the next day...

gorrilla glue will work as well as it fills voids when it expands. just remember when you wrap the stringers with glass you will have the 1/4" to 3/4" transitions that the glass will not like. you could also feather the ends where it ends so it would be a nice smooth transition. You could also do a lap joint, which is what i did for mine and sink in a few screws to help hold it.

Re: 1979 Imperial

So how does one cut the material away from plywood for the lap joint? Set circular saw 1/2 depth to scribe line. and chip the rest of the wood away with chisel? If I use this method of lap jointing or sister jointing, does anyone think I could still construct my decks and framework in 3 section, but the keel stringer will be properly jointed together in 3 places, PL'd to the keel, fillet and tabbed to the hull... This way I'd be using a modified version of my original plan... End result will have a one piece solid laminated vertical stringer running the length of my boat... What say ye?

Re: 1979 Imperial

I used a table saw and dado blade and just removed 1/2 the wood 3/4" at a time, chipping it out is a pain!

Re: 1979 Imperial

You could do exactly as you thought...Cut 1/2 depth with circ saw...instead of chippin, use your friendly grinder to remove most of the wood...if your careful, you could prolly get 99.9% of it gone that way, and use the gorilla glue like rrumba mentioned...

You are my hero!!! Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor... My boat almost met the same fate today....

Not only did you resign from casting for Mike Rowe's replacement on "Dirtiest Jobs" - you also bought my dream boat...

Crystal light - the new iboats term for ditching your glasser resto and upgrading to a newer, wood-free, rot free, boat... I like it!

Seriously, I love the new boat... Grease up the bearings, bring it South and we can fill up your fish box with redfish and specs..!!!

Edit: S.P. - just talked to Brutha Bear and I'm afraid the deed's been done... He's traded in his respirator for fishing rod...

Re: 1979 Imperial

Hey brethren…

Believe me this decision wasn’t easy… I don’t like giving up on projects, or leaving things undone! I appreciate everyone that has helped me along the way, you have become some great friends, almost like a family, and I hope I didn’t let anyone down…. Not my intent…

BUT!

Here are some, actually just a few, of my reasons for this surrender.

Besides the great folks on iboats, I was not enjoying this project, and knew my deadline was not possible. I’ve been grumpy, depressed, and not having any fun! If I had a place to set it aside, I may have come back to it at a later date, but this wasn’t an option…

I didn’t want to spend the rest of my summer (every weekend) stressing about a boat. I wanted to be on the water fishing with my dog.

I’m tired of itching, and everything in my small garage covered in toxic micro particles of death.

I calculated the amount of cash I needed to spend to get the boat the way I wanted it, and could not justify it any longer.

I think I got a tad happy with the sawzall, and should have left some things alone, not realizing the amount of work needed to undo my mistakes.

The warped transom literally took the wind out of my sails…

This was a good point to bail… I was able to return my CMC trim tilt, get a large credit/trade at local marina for my glass supplies, and give all the plywood to a friend that currently has a project going.

I feel bad dumping it! But there was a lot of interest at the landfill and someone, maybe an employee would grab it!

I kept the 70 hp Johnson and will be looking for a tinny project in the future.

Anyhow…

I found this perfect for me and Jackson boat 100 miles from my house… I’ve always wanted a Center Console… There is no wood, no rot possible with the construction of this boat… I’ll have some small modifications, that will take place over the winter, but right now my soul needs the water, not the dust…

And did I mention I’m looking for a tinny hull for the 70 Johnson?

Re: 1979 Imperial

Well, I guess, if you had to choose between using this or working on the Imperial, it might not be as tough a choice as we'd like to think we'd be taxed to have to make :)

Key%2520West%2520010.jpg

JL seems to be saying: "Yeah, we dumped the project boat. What about it punk?"

It doesn't look that way, but maybe it's: "Hey fella's, look at my new ride. CC w/ a sweet Yammie 115!"

Got's ta do what's ya got's ta do................

Too bad there wasn't a storage spot for the Imperial. Hope she's grabbed by someone before the machines get a hold of her...

RIP Imperial:(

I was going to quote certain parts of what ya wrote up there but I'll leave it be as the whole thing is perfect and stands alone.

Well done man, bravo, sweet ride, and enjoy the rest of your summer!:D

Re: 1979 Imperial

WOW I just couldn't believe my eyes  this morning when I brought up your thread. But I totally understand your position on the subject. Many years ago I bought a boat that was supposed to be ready for the water...well it wasn't and I spent the last couple months of the summer "trying" to get it out on the water. Well that didn't go so well and never got it out. I was majorly burned from that experience. I told myself that the next boat I bought would be ready to tow right to the water and use. So what did I do...I went and found me a project anyway LOL

I am wishing you the best of luck and enjoy the summer my friend :)

Aww shucks.....I really liked the look at the boat but I can understand your frustration. I'm sure the new boat makes up for it all. That thing is awesome!

OK when I posted this I have to admit that I did not see the new boat . I just saw that nice looking yellow Imperial and where it was sitting and it just gave me a really sick in my gut feeling ! Don't bulldoze it ! Give it to someone. I'm sure there would be takers. Heck a commercial fisherman could put it to use somehow ... Now that being said I absolutely and whole heartedly and if I had the same choice to make would have most definitely done the same thing ! Bear the Key West is one really nice boat and ready to go ! My boss has one just about the same size.. You and JL are gunna have some awesome times with it..
Congratulations !!

BTW ,the sick feeling is gone now..:)
