Brutha Bear,

Shock and Awe! Shock and Awe!

Threw me for a loop, that's fer sure...

May the Imperial either find a new home or Rest in Pieces...

Nice Hook up on the Key West...now you have to tow it down here and get it wet in its namesake hometown...just be sure to honk the horn on your way by so I can tag along and bring some doggie treats and frosties!...

Don't forget to take some pics of you and JL splashin that tub...:D

Re: 1979 Imperial

You are my hero!!! Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor... My boat almost met the same fate today....

Not only did you resign from casting for Mike Rowe's replacement on "Dirtiest Jobs" - you also bought my dream boat...

Crystal light - the new iboats term for ditching your glasser resto and upgrading to a newer, wood-free, rot free, boat... I like it!

Seriously, I love the new boat... Grease up the bearings, bring it South and we can fill up your fish box with redfish and specs..!!!

.

Brutha!

Crystal Light is nummy! I seriously think you should try some!

Fishing is in our future my friend!

Thanks for the understanding and support during these hard times?.

Well, I guess, if you had to choose between using this or working on the Imperial, it might not be as tough a choice as we'd like to think we'd be taxed to have to make :)

JL seems to be saying: "Yeah, we dumped the project boat. What about it punk?"

It doesn't look that way, but maybe it's: "Hey fella's, look at my new ride. CC w/ a sweet Yammie 115!"

Got's ta do what's ya got's ta do................

Too bad there wasn't a storage spot for the Imperial. Hope she's grabbed by someone before the machines get a hold of her...

RIP Imperial:(

Hey bro-

If I had some space I would have kept her around? I hope someone grabbed her also? I know it?s a shame, but my sanity is more important that some fiberglass structure? I?m not sure I?m a glass man? Tinny boat is next for me and J diggity dawgg?.

I?ll get some pics when we have our maiden voyage together?

Peace dood!

I was going to quote certain parts of what ya wrote up there but I'll leave it be as the whole thing is perfect and stands alone.

Well done man, bravo, sweet ride, and enjoy the rest of your summer!:D

Broham Jas? you are my hero! I?ll be drinkin Kool-Aid someday soon!

sorry to see her go to the dump, but, like you, i like the center console boat better

Thanks bro-

Re: 1979 Imperial

WOW I just couldn't believe my eyes  this morning when I brought up your thread. But I totally understand your position on the subject. Many years ago I bought a boat that was supposed to be ready for the water...well it wasn't and I spent the last couple months of the summer "trying" to get it out on the water. Well that didn't go so well and never got it out. I was majorly burned from that experience. I told myself that the next boat I bought would be ready to tow right to the water and use. So what did I do...I went and found me a project anyway LOL

I am wishing you the best of luck and enjoy the summer my friend :)

Thanks Glen,

I guess maybe I’m just not a glasser… If I had a proper shop, and I could let a boat sit and work on it here and there, I would enjoy it more…. I feel a tinny boat will be my next “resto” project… The 70 Johnson has some duty left in it for sure!

Aww shucks.....I really liked the look at the boat but I can understand your frustration. I'm sure the new boat makes up for it all. That thing is awesome!

Thanks brutha, Time on the water with JL and friends is going to be great! The KW is getting a cover made for her, as she’ll be sitting outside most of the time… I’ll still be lurking on the forum until I find a tin boat to mess with… Looking forward to your Glastron build!

Bear sorry to hear about your trip to the landfill. Hopefully, the new boat will serve you well.

All good brutha! Good luck on your boat quest! Sorry about all your issues also!

OK when I posted this I have to admit that I did not see the new boat . I just saw that nice looking yellow Imperial and where it was sitting and it just gave me a really sick in my gut feeling ! Don't bulldoze it ! Give it to someone. I'm sure there would be takers. Heck a commercial fisherman could put it to use somehow ... Now that being said I absolutely and whole heartedly and if I had the same choice to make would have most definitely done the same thing ! Bear the Key West is one really nice boat and ready to go ! My boss has one just about the same size.. You and JL are gunna have some awesome times with it..
Congratulations !!

BTW ,the sick feeling is gone now..:)

Brutha,

I know I felt sick as well… And I totally understand your first post cuz the same things went thru my mind… I’ll have some fun the rest of the summer with the KW, and then I’ll be doing some small tweaks over the winter…. I may even start a thread on the forum… Thanks for understanding my insanity! BTW… You have mad skills and your boat is going to be stunning when finished! I’ll be lurking and checkin progress…

Brutha Bear,

Shock and Awe! Shock and Awe!

Threw me for a loop, that's fer sure...

Brutha Gus,

You’re a cool cat!

Shock and Awe…. That’s funny!

I’m betting someone took her home Saturday… I hope so! If I’m ever in your part of town I’d love to go fishing with ya! I’ll buy the gas, bait, and beers! Same goes if your in Wisconsin! Always welcome dood!

HAHA, I know you have got to be kidding.....but funny where those imperials end up...you do remember mine right.....

LOL....nuf said

Hey JDA... I'm not kidding bro- I do remember... Peace out! Happy for you and the new business! Congratz my friend!

Re: 1979 Imperial

I like glass boats, I'm saying not sure I like restoring them....

Just kicking ya around. I have zero room to talk....... At least the new found lust for metal didn't start sooner, else ya might have resorted to using the sawzall ..... It ain't the good time, as suggested in the pledge handbook I was given.. Intact & whole towed to the dump on the trailer, seems much easier;)

Maybe the tin hat crew issues a special 'Former Glasser' edition of that handbook, just for fun

It'll be interesting if the imperial shows up in a 'I just scored a free Imperial at the dump' thread

JL doesn't look like much of a fisherdog. More of a leaping, jumping & splashing about in the water kind of a guy!

Just wondering are the KW made with no wood at all in the structure ? If not whats in the transom and stringers?

Hey bro-

No wood at all, I believe the stringers are composit cored and glass covered. Transom is some type of composite material also.

This is from their web-site

Every boat from Key West Boats is entirely free of wood in every aspect, therefore it is obvious we feel that it is the best approach. But a better question may be why?

Wood can rot. We all know that, and anyone who has even limited exposure to old wood cored boats has experienced some level of wood rot. Rot can render an otherwise nice boat worthless since the structural members it is used in are such an integral, important, and hard to replace component of a boat. To be fair to wood though it should be acknowledged that it is a strong and resilient substance that can take a lot of abuse, before it rots. But isn't it OK if it is fully encapsulated in fiberglass?

Full encapsulation sounds like a workable solution to wood rot, but the truth of the matter is that fiberglass lamination is still somewhat porous, no matter how well done. Water eventually migrates into even the best protected wood and the rot process starts. At this point the full encapsulation may even be detrimental by trapping the water in the wood and preventing it from drying out to stop the rot process. Therefore at Key West Boats we have chosen to use the more modern composites for coring.

Are all composite cored boats better than wood cored boats?

While composite coring is potentially better than wood coring through the elimination of wood rot, the transition by a builder from wood coring to composite coring is not as simple as it may seem. Composites come in many different forms and strengths adjusted over the years for each application. For instance, the composite core of a transom is exposed to far different stresses than the core for the sidewall of a boat, or the floor, and even the deck. Therefore at Key West Boats we use a product that has been specifically engineered over the years to meet a very narrow application. It would be simpler and less expensive to cut some corners here, but the life of your boat and your family is worth the effort we make.

Beyond the very specific composite used for an application is the method of installation, or more specifically, the fiberglass materials used to install it. At Key West Boats we have many years of experience with these products and have learned that they require high tech directional fiberglass carefully installed to provide the strength needed. A good example of this would be the floor of a boat. At any point in the cockpit a heavy passenger may be standing while riding through rough water. This concentrates an extreme amount of pressure in a concentrated area. Therefore the reinforcement on the very bottom of the floor, under the composite coring, must be able to withstand the pounding, for wave after wave, and year after year. To see how we're doing check out an older Key West Boat and look for cracks in this and other high stress areas.

Re: 1979 Imperial

Sounds like a good way to build a boat to me . I think the next time I'm at the shop I'll climb in the bosses KW and check out the deck for any cracks . He,s had it for a long time .
Later S.P.

Re: 1979 Imperial

Hi Trikeman,

I may have some pics, or I did save all the steering parts, I still may be able to help you out send me a PM...

On another note, the Key West has been awesome, it's an incredible boat, very dry and stable in rough water, and it fly's! I've hit 45 mph GPS 1/2 tank, gear, friend and Jackson! I take her on a week long fishing trip in northern WI on 18SEPT... I miss the aspect of not having a resto project with you dudes on iboats, but I don't miss the glass... I still have the 70 Johnson, and have been looking for the right tinny for a center console project... Sorry I've not been more active posting, but I have been lurking around keeping tabs on everyone's builds! Peace my brethren!
