Re: 1980 Rinkerbuilt Renovation (Paint and Powder)

Well, thanks for following along everyone, but I've decided to change directions. :(

It turns out my Frankenstein engine will cost about $1000 to rebuild (at best), and then I'll still need to pay for the interior, not to mention fix up the trailer, etc. During all my research I started noticing how much parts are going for. And now that I have the engine completely broke down, and I'm also an eBay power seller, I might as well part it out. I have the complete lower unit off, and that goes for around $600. The windshield can go for $300-$400. I can get maybe $200-$300 off the trailer I'm hoping. Maybe the boat itself is worth something to someone. I still owe $600 on the boat, so after selling the LU, I'll start banking the rest and looking for another boat.

I've set my next budget at $2500, which opens up a lot of possibilities. With all my new found knowledge, I know exactly which boats to look for, and what to look at when I inspect them. I hate to see "A Dog's Life" go to pieces, but it only makes sense at this point.

Thank you all so much for your help and guidance! This has been a long fun learning experience, and I can't wait until the next chapter!

Hey Brewern, I have pretty much the same boat except mine is a 1982 19'er with an OMC 3.0 ( pretty much the same engine) with a stringer outdrive. They are a quick little boat and very stable. The two senders one is a trim limit switch so when you trim the outdrive it will not let it go up too far, the other is for the guage. The tilt switch on the throttle control will let you raise the outdrive all the way up for trailering. Also are you going to replace your dash guages? I am in need of a tach if you are willing to sell it. PM me if you are! Thanks Dale

Duke, did you still want that tach? Since I'm parting out the boat, I'll give you dibs on the tach and any other gauges you want. No charge. My way of saying thanks to these wonderful forums!

Happens. Often....

Move on to a better rig. Either in better condition to start or better suited to your needs & how you use the boat.

Dang, this one was kinda nostalgic for me since I grew up boating on my uncle's 78 or 79 Rinkerbuilt that was very similar. His was an outboard model though with an 85HP Evinrude.

Sorry to hear that ezmobee. I too had great dreams and hopes for this boat, but then again, it was my first. Sometimes you just have to accept the parts are worth more than the whole sometimes I guess. :( The outdrive itself should pay for what I owe, and the rest will be a down payment on our next boat. Once that's paid off, I'll sell it and keep moving up until we have a boat we love and can live in the garage. Then it's on to the next toy... !!!

If there is anyone around central KY looking for a complete Sterndrive SE106 outdrive, gimble housing, trim rams, 1980 Rinkerbuilt hull, walkthrough windshield, OMC 2.5 longblock, etc... let me know! It's all up for sale, and started listing on eBay tonight.
