Re: 1980 Rinkerbuilt Renovation (Paint and Powder)

Chapter 8:

Woo hoo! Today we pulled the motor!

What a beautiful day to work outside! My son and I woke up this morning and started a fresh pot of coffee and ate breakfast. We were expecting my mother and step-father show up at 10AM with a cherry picker and all the tools we would need to pull the motor. After visiting a bit, we started pulling pieces and parts off the motor. That's when my son figured out we'd be dragging the skeg since the lower unit was down, and I've since removed the dash and controls! LU removed:

And then things went pretty smooth. I wont bore you with pics or removing little things, but the engine removal was successful. On to the rebuild!

And look, it has a sad face:

Hey Brewern, I have pretty much the same boat except mine is a 1982 19'er with an OMC 3.0 ( pretty much the same engine) with a stringer outdrive. They are a quick little boat and very stable. The two senders one is a trim limit switch so when you trim the outdrive it will not let it go up too far, the other is for the guage. The tilt switch on the throttle control will let you raise the outdrive all the way up for trailering. Also are you going to replace your dash guages? I am in need of a tach if you are willing to sell it. PM me if you are! Thanks Dale

Heya Duke,
Duke as in basketball? If so, I'm sure we are mortal enemies and can not do business together!!!! LOL
Just kidding! Nice boat! Mine is 17', and cruises very nicely on the water, but I'm in the process of making her new again. The motor is waiting for rebuild in the garage, but the transmission in my Durango just cost me $1780. So, for a bit, the boat is on hold. Give me time, and I'll get the Rinker back in the water.
As for the gauges, yes, I do plan on getting a whole new set. The gauges I have aren't in the best shape. Do you need some better pictures of what I have, or are certain what I have is what you want?

Moderators, please delete those dupe posts, and this post. The site never responded after I hit submit a couple times.

Sorry I didn't catch your thread until now.

I'm sure you already did this but if not, a roll of masking tape and a marker are your friend for wiring connections. I did that when I tore apart my Trans Am as I knew I wouldn't remember where the wires went. If you have one, a Brother label maker works wonders for this as well (and is more legible if your handwriting is as bad as mine is).

Looks like you're making good progress!

brewen when you get that 4 banger re-built do yourself a favor as I did and make yourself a new fuel line (steel one from pump to carb) so it wraps around the front of the head and not over the top of the valve cover. It makes it allot easier when it comes to adjusting the valves and other odd duties you'll find it's in the way of. And keep the light color paint it makes it easier to spot oil leaks if any appear. Nise work so far and there are numerous wiring diagrams up in the adults only sticky in the i/o forum along with other very usefull info for diyers

Brewren, No basketball reference at all , just a nick name so I think we are good :). Your guages are slightly different but no big deal as long as they are in working order, I really only need the tach though. I made a new guage pannel for mine out of a piece of 3/8" thick walnut with some trim attached, looks pretty good,I'm a woodworker for 40+ years. I'll get some pics. and post them. Also while you have the engine out this would be a good time to check your gimble bearing , drive shaft & exhaust bellows, shift cable, and u-joints. Not hard to replace just a little time consuming and peace of mind whem you're done. I just bought a 2006 durango to pull mine with ( no tranny problems though knock on wood). let me know how much you want for the tach. Thanks

Nice work so far. Regarding the sun deck. There are a lot of mid size ski boats that allow for the rear seat bases to me moved to the gap between the top dog house and the gunwal to form one solid cushion. I think most bay liners have the molded fiberglass inserts for it.

Sea Rays are the same. You can take the seat cushions and set them on plastic or teak brackets to make a decent sized sun deck.

You can see the teak brackets in mine (before refinishing). They would be very easy to duplicate.

Yea my Ray has the step molded into the gunwhale and the dog house to host the padded cushions of the two jump seats. Makes a nice sun deck along with the padded bimini storage lid and the padded dog house top about 24"x7' the admiral loves it.

Have you looked into the cost of rebuilding your engine? I have a 3.0mercruser that will have to be rebuilt during my restoration. I figured about $1200 for machining and parts.

How's the new year treating you & this project?

I notice your quit smoking app is no longer present... If you'd PM me the link, I seem to have mis-placed it..

Actually, I have no idea what to expect. I expected to have started rebuilding it by now, but in mid-December, the transmission went out on my Durango. That cost just over $1800 to repair. As you can imagine, that took the wind out of my sails on the rebuild.
So, maybe I'll get a big fat tax return, and that'll get me motivated again. But, for now, I'm in the financial duldrums!

Re: 1980 Rinkerbuilt Renovation (Paint and Powder)

Perhaps the winds of change have started blowing, and with the promise of spring around the corner, it's time to get this project going again! I've paid off a few bills, and hopefully my Durango's transmission problems are behind me. I work at a university, and instead of giving us pay raises during these difficult economic times, they're giving us more time off. And for the next week... no work! Woo hoo!

Tonight I started the engine rebuild! YES!

I got pretty far this evening. I have one bolt that won't break loose, but I can easily overcome that problem. LOL I realized after breaking down the this far, I forgot to pump out the oil. So my next steps will be to pump out the oil, remove the lifters and whatnot, and carry on. I called and checked on boring and honing the cylinders, and I'm looking at about $300 which includes new pistons and rings. Not bad! Hopefully they'll assemble it too. Anyway, carrying on. Here's some pics:

Uh yep.. I think I found a problem!
Does anyone know the torque specs for the head bolts on this engine?

Chapter 11

Tonight I was able to remove the oil intake/oil pump, crank shaft and pistons. I'm waiting on a puller, and then I can pull the cam shaft. Then, the engine will be completely broken down. Next up is giving the block and cylinder head a goo cleaning. After that, it's of to the shop to be magnafluxed, possibly bored and honed. Definitely honed either way. This whole 'Paint and Powder' has turned into a lot more!
Soon, the costs will start adding up! I plan on keeping track of all expenses and posting those here for everyone interested.
