Jay take a road trip over to Franks in Linwood and check out what they have. If you have questions they can answer them. They have hummingbird, lowrance, and some garmin. They usually have a booth set up at fishing, and outdoor shows around the state in the winter and early spring, and have better prices during them. FYI You get the same price at the store as they have at the shows on those weekends so don't feel like you have to drive aross the state to get a deal. You can save a little bit of $$$ that way.

Anything from the Lowrance HDS range will give about the best bang for your buck.....if you want to re mortgage the house buy a Furuno.....okay yah, thought not!!

Check Northwoods too. Sometimes they have them for a great price.

Buy used!!!!!

All of these are Lowrance units. I don't think Humminbird matches Lowrance until you step up to the 898 which is a $1500 unit.

bassboatcentral.com is by FAR the best source for used electronics. More selection than e-bay by a long shot, and good prices too.

Yah, used may be the way to go so long as I play my cards right.

I nosed around on that forum and was seeing some good prospects there, thanks for the suggestion!

I've had Lowrance before and really like their gear a lot. In my research Lowrance seems to have mixed reviews (lots o good, some not so good) whereas Humm seems to have almost all positive. I think it would be hard for me to go wrong either way.

Yah, Franks is certainly the best place to be for any kind of fishing gear in our area. Good people, quality stuff, good pricing.

I hear ya mark/mag - I'm not nearly a good enough fisherman to justify the $1K + range stuff.

As a contrast to Franks, Northwoods "Wholesale" has quality gear (and a ton of junk too), terrible staff, and their prices are hit or miss. Some stuff is priced great and then just a few miles south, Franks (retail) has much better pricing. Kinda weird really.

Continuing to work on the stern bench/deck (slow).

I've also been working on rigging rod holders and downrigger stuff. Kinda fabbing/referbbing some stuff. I's fun moving on to rigging fishing gear

Nothing fabulous so no photos yet.

I run "old school" Lowarance color stuff,....

A LCX100 locator next to a LCX20 sonar/gps combo,....

That way I don't have to split the screen making things easier to see,...

If you looking at used stuff I think the LCX20 is a great combo unit,.......

Ok, finally have some photo worthy progress to share with ya.

Working on the stern bench cushions here. I grabbed some closed cell foam that was originally used as a sun pad on Thumper the Baja (RIP and keep right on giving the goods). I wanted to go with closed cell as it's nice and firm. See, the back rest will fold down onto the seat part and serve as extra stern deck space. Anyhow, here's the foam and sealed up ply I'm stapling too...

And the finished product, back rest and seat cushion...

Since this is a multipurpose/fish & ski rig I figured I could justify a little eye candy embroidery type work for the back rest...

I kinda thought that pair of SN stitching would break up the big chunk of white and give the boat more of a "factory" feel to it

The new cushions look great and I am absolutely gaga over the embroidery, you are correctamundo when you say it gives it a factory look...I am gonna have to look into that when the time comes...

Awsome Jason, makes me wish just a little that I lived closer to the big city to get that kind of qaulity added touch detail done! Can't help you with the FF/GPS I'm still trying to fiqure that out myself.

I've played around with the new down/side imaging stuff in a couple of tournament rigs and to be honest it didn't do much for me,...I found it kind of confusing and complicated to justify the added expenditure,...

A good color locator and color gps is all I really need,...........

I've played around with the new down/side imaging stuff in a couple of tournament rigs and to be honest it didn't do much for me,...I found it kind of confusing and complicated to justify the added expenditure,...

A good color locator and color gps is all I really need,...........

I'm with Teamster on this one. Our local rescue boat has top of the range Furuno sideways looking sonar etc, and it's a three day course to learn how to use it properly.

Took me about three hours to install and about three minutes to learn how to use my Garmin GPS550S combined colour chart plotter-fish finder-sounder.

Hey Jas , I have always checked out your threads but never posted but I had to chime in and complement you on all your work . You do some top notch awesome stuff man ! Your threads are always entertaining and fun to watch unfold ! Did you do the sewing and embroidery on the seats ? I,d love to put an embroidered logo on mine if I could figure that out .

On the embroidery, I just swung by my local shop to get it done. They had to "image" the SN logo first so there was a one time setup fee, but after that, each logo was only 14 bux ($12 for the smaller one on the bow cushion).

For my electronics, yah I hear ya fellas. I think I can be talked out of the DI/SI stuff. I suppose I can be talked into it too though. I've been doing a lot of reading and I see some guys say they can do without, not a biggie. Then I read how sliced bread had taken a back seat to DI/SI it's so awesome. Either way, I'm still a bottom feeder and will certainly need a good score on this piece of equipment.

Hey, Jason - The SN logos are the cats pajamas! You're making the rest of us barkyarders and the $40 grand glitter boaters look bad. If you don't mind my asking - How much was the set-up fee? The work itself is very reasonable.

All the FFs on the market are enough to spin heads. I think the makers found a way to feed off of all the Bill Dance and fishing guide wannabes. And hit the gold mine. Some of those prices - aye chihuahua!

Um, I think it was $30 maybe? Or, was it $40? I can't remember exactly as I checked with a few local places, that was the ballpark anyhow. Not too bad. Since they now have it I can always go back and get more done sans that set up fee. So, I suppose I need a couple more Sea Nymph boats now eh

The sea nymph embroidery is super cool....

On the electronics, I hear ya' - I agree with GA_Boater. These tools are great for tournament fisherman or guides that have their livelihood depending on finding fish. However, for the recreational angler (like me) that visits the same water frequently, I like the traditional methods (word of mouth, finding your honey holes, etc..). On my home lake, we have lots of good structure spots marked with buoys, etc... Putting expensive electronics in a marine environment where they get wet, etc.. leads to some bugginess as well. (e.g. how many marine stereos have you seen that still work after 3 or 4 years....).

All that said, I'll probably put a fish finder/depth finder on my boat, but will try to find something reasonable...
