Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

Speaking of weather....

I thought I might take a run at some bigger water this morning.

Wind gusts to 30 and small craft advisory.

Pass....

Blah,.........That's mellow,......

I pre-fished the FLW Walleye Tour tournament in Escanba this summer,....

We put the boat in about 40 miles south and his wife drove the truck/trailer back to town,.....We fished all the way back in conditions like that,.........

Of course that was in a Ranger 621 and it was spooky as he77,.....

You made a good call,,........lol...

It was dead calm when I woke up this morning and I was 2nd guessing that weather report. Glad I didn't go, the wind is whippen out there, and I'm in the trees. Pretty cold out there too. Yup, good day for firewood.

Inshore or offshore wind????

If it's offshore sometimes you can get away with staying close to shore and not be it it much,.....

No matter, this Sea Nymph, with it's mini splashwell, and two boys at ages 4 and 6 aboard, I am a fair weather fisherman, noooo doubt.

Now you, me, and a few of the other iboats brothers in the Islander, we might just sneak in a day of fishen;):D

First check of the Minn Kota 50# tells me this is a great match to this hull...

Yeah, can't imagine why you'd want to spend the morning like that  Makes it all worthwhile...

They'll remember all that forever, fishing w/ dad on a boat he RE-BUILT right out there in the garage ;) Most excellent! Good times!

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

Thanks fellas! Yah, Ethan's hat was a crack up today. He would throw out totally random, quiet, "woohoo, woohoos." He had me in stitches:D

Ryan was pretty hard core this morning with that 30ish degree weather. His hands were frozen but he kept right on casting, working for those fish. He finally to a quick break...

Yah, I get stopped and asked about the Sea Nymph wherever I go. It's cool to talk with guys about it. They are like, "So wait, was the deck like that from the factory? Oh, you built it like that? Did you paint that too? Wow, you did a really nice job on that boat!"

I felt pretty darn good today fishing out on the lake. I'm thinking there had to have been a bass tournament this morning or something. $35K bass rigs everywhere, with matching glitter trailers.

Then there's my little 30+ year old metal boat in the mix. Course mine is paid for and I caught bass! Ya baby!!;):D

Sorry I haven't posted to the thread in a while. Just getting caught up.
Looks like another great trip with the little ones. Love seeing the big smiles on their faces.
Oh BTW the boat looks awesome too.

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

Hey, thanks for swinging through fellas - we had a great day, good stuff:) I'm wondering how many more times she'll be out to fish this year - I really ought to be in a tree stand instead.

Progress accountability--------

I finally got my workshop cleaned up enough to do some work so I have a little forward progress on the stern deck/bench. Nothing special so no photos yet.

I've also been carefully considering electronics. I don't know how many of you guys have done the research or have experience with a good set up, if you do I'd appreciate any feedback!

So here's the deal:

I need FF and GPS combo.

I'll be fishing everything with this - Great Lakes to skinny rivers and everything in between.

I am not rich! I know these units can be $$$. Skies the limit really! I am entirely open to grabbing a nice used unit off eBay or something. I'm in no rush, maybe Christmas deals or something bottomfeederish will pop up.

I don't mind spending some dough as I do like quality stuff, and this is an important piece.

The good news is my buck will go a long way as this serve dual purpose for both the Sea Nymph and the Islander. I'll just need to snag another base and transducer setup.

Anyway, here's what I've narrowed it down to:

Buy used!!!!!
X15mt is a black/white unit, but with lots of power, a 7" screen, and pretty good GPS. GPS antenna's are no longer available, and you have to use older mapping chips which can be problematic.

520c is a 5" screen unit, color, with built in GPS antenna. These pop up pretty often.

Those are the two units I would consider, unless you really want the option of some of the newer tech like structure scan, then I'd be looking at used HDS5's and HDS7's.

All of these are Lowrance units. I don't think Humminbird matches Lowrance until you step up to the 898 which is a $1500 unit.

bassboatcentral.com is by FAR the best source for used electronics. More selection than e-bay by a long shot, and good prices too.

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

If you want the down imaging or side imaging tech, I'd skip that unit, and buy a used 898, or Lowrance HDS7, and add structure scan to it.

Hummingbird cuts off some of the screen with the overlay data, so keep that in mind. A 7" screen ends up being closer to a 5-6" screen.
For the Sea Nymph side imaging will be more useful than down imaging. The Islander might make better use of down imaging because it would likely be used in deeper water. Even still the side imaging would be useful on the big lake as well.

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

I am running a 798 csi unit, LOVE it, do wish the screen was bigger, but for the features I got and the pricing it was a great compromise for me. I do see myself upgrading in the future, to a 900 series, takes alot of extra cheddar though. If you have no interest in side imaging then that 597 would be a great unit. Oh ya, humminbird being part of johnson outdoors has them being the leader in technology in the industry as far as I can see!!!!!!! Great things coming out of that partnership!
