Yah fellas, whatever I go with it's gotta be easy to get (like on the shelf at the Menards) so I can make quick work of touch ups when I scratch the thing:rolleyes:

I say go orange with a white stripe with a right angle near the stern. A nice retro nod.

Yah, if I go black and white I still might be kinda cool I guess. Well, maybe just not super boring I spose.

Though, the white on white boat is calling to me at the moment. Hmmmmm......

A nice retro nod.

I think someday I'd love to get into a project that is more of a retro/restoration deal. That'd be kinda cool:cool:

K, progress post.

First thing, since the previous owners bolted up an outboard to a transom the consistency of wet leaves I have some problems with the knee brace and transom skin.

It's hard to make out in the photo but you might just see on the knee brace here - it was starting to rip out at the top bolt hole...

Same on the other side too.

I grabbed a piece of scrap alum, cleaned it up, cut it in half...
P1080808.jpg

I then slid it in between the knee brace and transom as there was just a little gap for it. Riveted and bolted up...

Much better:)

Re: 1980 Sea Nymph SS 165 Rebuild

On the transom skin, it was bowed out a bit and there was actually a little crease where the OB bracket was. No good...

Now, this chunk of 1/4" alum came with the MirroCraft. It was used to reinforce the kicker motor on a soft transom. You can see all the corrosion on there from water getting in between...
P1080809.jpg

So I shaped it, ran the belt sander over it, then a bunch of elbow grease with sanding pad and steel wool...

Notch troweled on 5200...

And all bolted up...

Feelin good about that! Bomber strong!

I'm thinking I'll leave that bare, just wipe on some Shark Hide.

No I recognize that if EZ ever makes it up to MI he won't ride in my boat now since I made this move. Ah, the sacrifices we make.....:p

One more task to complete and I can move on to paint work.

Yous can get the sparkly Rusto at Walmart,......

Although I don't know how it would hold up on a boat, it would be fun to see a sparkly tinny,...

Teamster - You have a better chance convincing me to put a tiller handle on the 90 hp than painting this glitter:rolleyes:

Mark - Seeing how this is an outboard boat he may stand by it at the launch, but he'll not climb in while it's floating with that plate on the back;)

That nice shinny plate will look real sharp against a black hull. :p

Rookie question of the day: What are those bolts made of so they don't corrade? I may be doing something similar soon...

I do not have a problem with an aluminum plat on the back. Anything else though............

Not that you are even considering it Jas, but for other's benefit......I'd really avoid any of those specialty Rusto spray paints for anything other than small accent pieces. I painted the top deck of the Jupiter with the Metallics one and it was a nightmare.

I put a plate on the back of my Alumacraft when I redid it,.....I thought it would make a great spacer to set the motor back a bit,...At least that was my line of thinking,.....It didn't make a difference,...

Those are all stainless steel all slathered up in 5200. Matter of fact, that job up there I had 5200 everywhere! Whatta mess!

I do not have a problem with an aluminum plat on the back. Anything else though............

Yah, for other fellas who are thinking about the plate on the back...

My own opinion (same as ez's actually) is that wood should be avoided. Just a great opportunity to invite rot and such. Also, in most cases, that piece can be completely left off all together.

Now, in my case, since the previous outboard bracket had left some creases in the skin due to a worthless transom, once I bolted my outboard up onto a new transom, the skin might have flexed enough to actually crack it. Now with this plate on, it can flex all it wants to as it's completely bedded in 5200, totally sealed up.

Not that you are even considering it Jas, but for other's benefit......I'd really avoid any of those specialty Rusto spray paints for anything other than small accent pieces. I painted the top deck of the Jupiter with the Metallics one and it was a nightmare.

Yah, thanks for posting that. I should prolly mention...

Kinda my theory on paint is two fold:
1) Gotta be inexpensive or it's gotta be very expensive. Middle of the road can very well give same/similar results to the cheap stuff so why not go cheap. Expensive stuff needs a skilled hand to use, this I am not.
2) Must be easy to obtain vs. having a specialty paint shipped from never never land. That way I can touch up or recoat any time it seems appropriate.

Rustoleum fits the bill on all accounts;)

That's just me though.
