Ok where to begin. I just bought a 1982 Ranger 335V w/ 115 Hp Mercury inline 6. It had been sitting for a year or so when I bought. I was told by the owner that it had a 1/2 a tank of fuel in and to just top it off with super unleaded and oil. So I did. Took it to the lake, no problems firing it up, Idles good, but when i try to WOT , it bogs down at around 3000 RPM. Sometime it will take off and hit 5000 RPMs + . But when i slow down and try again it bogs down 2500 - 3000 RPM. Plugs are new, compression test shows cyl. #1 120 psi , #2 120 psi , #3 121 psi , #4 120 psi , #5 121 psi , #6 120 psi. He also said he rebuilt the carbs a year ago. I did drain the tank and found Varnish on the lower half of the tank. Im in the process of cleaning it out with B-12 Carb cleaner. Any suggestions. HELP!!

I'd clean the carbs too. Also try priming the fuel bulb when it is acting up. If priming it helps, the fuel pump needs to be rebuilt.

That fuel could be bad too. Try a portable tank with fresh fuel in it. Also if it doesn't already have one, install a water seperator filter.

Re: 1982 115HP "Tower of Power" WOT problem

I did try priming the bulb during WOT and that did not help. I almost have the tank cleaned out. I'm using a gallon of B-12 carb cleaner in it and using a toilet snake ,about 5ft long attached to a cordless drill, with a shop rag zip tied to the end, seems to be working pretty well. how difficult is it to rebuild the carbs on this and sync them? This is my first boat, but I am somewhat mechanical. Thanks for the help

The carbs are real simple to clean and rebuild. You should purchase a OEM service manual to make life simpler.

Install new gasket sets. Synching them is another issue. I normally set the carbs to 1-1/2 turns out from lightly seated, and then warm the motor in the water. Then adjust them go give smoothest and fastest idle, preferrably in gear. Now the carbs will likely be set too lean to accelerate, and you will need to richem them 1/8 of a turn, starting from the top carb, until you get an acceptable acceleration. Test each carb setting by accelerating until it is correct.

Well, cleaned the fuel tank, fuel pump rebuild, fresh gas. Still wont hit WOT. Starts to miss or cut out at 2200 to 3000 RPM. What should I check next?

Your stator likely has a high speed and a low speed winding. You might get on Dolphinmarineservices.com or the web site for CDI and go through the troubleshooting procedure for your ADI Ignition. CDI makes good replacement ignition parts.

Well I pulled my covers off the flywheel and I started checking the wires going from the switch boxes to the stator and i found the two yellow wires coming from the rectifier corroded very badly. The jackets fell apart off of them. So im guessing that I need to replace the Stator?

Any suggestions on removing the flywheel without a flywheel holder?

I use an electric impact wrench and a harmonic balancer puller.

I went to Autozone and borrowed a Harmonic Balancer Puller and I cant get the flywheel to move any. The bolts that the kit came with are starting to bend and I'm afraid of stripping out the bolt holes on top of the flywheel. Could you describe how you get it off.

Go to merc and get the proper puller. Or get an after market one. The merc one is C-91-48501A1 or C-91-73687A1 These #'s are out of the merc man. It is a little expensive but it is cheaper than a new fly wheel.

you might be getting to far into this. listen to the techs and clean and repack your carbs. it sounds like your high speed jets are clogged and thats so easy to fix.

I did pull the carbs, they were clean a a whistle. After pulling the cowlings off the flywheel, I traced the wire from the switch boxes back to the stator and found that the two yellow wires that come from the stator to the rectifier were completely corroded, their jackets were falling off, and there was a spot on the engine were they had been shorting out. But thanks for the input. I'm borrowing a flywheel puller from the local Marina tomorrow and I will have a new stator in a few days. I will report my progress next week sometime.

Just wondering, the two yellow wires that come from the Stator to the rectifier, what is their purpose, what function do the have.

Tim, Yellow stator wires are for charging the battery. I do not know if or how they are interconnected to the part of the stator that powers the switchboxes, however.

Thanks Chris, I couldn't find that answer in the OEM Manual. I'm pulling the stator off this morning, and hope to find one around the Dallas Ft. Worth area today.

Chris just for the sake of wondering, should I change a out the rectifier and switches, if I put a new stator on. Could they be bad or damaged due to the bad stator.

Rectifier is easily tested. I do not know if bad stator charging wires could damage a switchbox. Maybe Laddies will chime in.
