Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Is it possible to not have a wood transom?

The pics of mine.....a wood free zone apart from the motor transom pads......the hull is 30 years old next year.....

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

I havent been able to work on the boat since we finally got snow nad ice here in indiana.

On my to do list is to Build a motor stand and get the foam out and get the boat ready to flip over once the snow is gone. I can get free used 2x4s from my dads work, he works at a galvanize factory and they have tons of 2x4s that come to hold steal on trailers so im just waiting for him to bring me some

Is it possible to burn the foam out? has anyone ever tried this? will it even burn? is it a bad idea? if so why?

A few lists of just two words:

Noxious fumes

Scorched paint

Water logged

Besides, I'm not sure you really want to anneal the whole hull. And most foam 'melts/burns' into a god awful, black & sticky, 10 times worse then tar, mess.

If your waiting for 2x4's anyway, why the rush to find a short cut to removing the foam? Spend short periods of time removing small sections of foam. Slow & steady, turtle/turtle/turtle. Work on any area you can while waiting for supplies & materials for another area of the project.

I am fairly sure there are more qualified responses headed your way. Don't be surprised if some of them are a tad harsh.

Got to take out some of the foam today. I took out three trashbags full of foam and you can barley even tell! This has to the worst part of a aluminum boat rebuild. I found a flat head screw driver that is angled like a pry bar that worked really well on geting foam out.

JP, do you have a pressure washer handy. It might cut the foam up or at least loosen it up. Just thinking out loud here.

No pressure washer =[

so far my total investment for the boat is about 40 bucks and that was for a tarp and some bunge cords!

I honestly think i could do the restore for 500 but im not sitting that as my budget because i want to make sure its safe

jpormen, just keep plugging away, I took seven 55 gallon drum sized bags of foam and crumbled plywood out of my Sea Nymph last Sunday and today. A big shop vac is really handy for the smaller sized chunks. I used a similar sized prybarr to what you have there, but cut the sections with a sawzall blade and tried to get it out in bigger chunks. Be carefull if you use the sawzall and don't punch through or cut anything you don't want cut. ;) Get a kitchen sized garbage can up in the boat with you and dump it into the bigger can.

My dad misplaced his saws all so i cant use that, so i just tried to guess to where to pry the foam out i got usually about 5 inch peices sometimes bigger alot of times smaller but i got alot of foam out but theres just so much in there and its all soaked.

What worked best for me, was trying to get under large chunks, and bringing out entire sections. Of course it was soaked, and frozen so maybe that made it hold together better.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

You could paint it with Rustoleum products for $20 or two-part marine products for $200. Up to you.

Well, maybe there are other suggestions down the thread and I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I would suggest not going with either option; spend about $130 for the right primers, prep solvent, sand paper, and Interlux polyurethane paints and thinner and brush it on with a really good brush. If it is your nature to be nit-picky anal about things and read about other people's paint jobs it will look like a million dollars.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Welcome to the madness!
That motor should charge the battery no problem.
Also, no need for marine plywood, in fact it can interact with the tinand wreck havoc (pitting, acidic reaction)
I'm not sure where it was posted on I-Boats, but I don't think your are supposed to use pressure treated ply anywhere in close or contact w/ the Aluminum hull/transom. Galvonic (sp?) response just like mixed metals...

Marine plywood is essentially EXTERIOR plywood without internal voids. AC or AB or AA plywood will usually be FIR and be stamped "Exposure 1 Exterior" and has the same glue as marine.

The plywood that rots aluminum is pressure treated plywood that is treated with products like ACQ. It is not galvanic - it is acidic. In some seacoast areas with large marine service and boat repair yards you used to be able to still get CCA treated plywood- CCA will not harm aluminum and can be used in boats. It was pretty much banned from general sale becuase of concerns with arsenic content.

EDIT: And this is why you should finish reading a thread before replying:
Nope, not correct. Well, maybe 1/2 correct, or 1/2 incorrect.....Readily available ACQ treated plywood (green) will eat an aluminum boat and you definitely don't want to use it! BUT, CCA treated plywood is just fine for use with an aluminum boat, it's what the aluminum boat manufacturers use. Problem is, the CCA treated stuff is hard to find since it was banned by the EPA....Plydek XL I mentioned is CCA treated.

Thanks for the info mark, i def plan on posting on here before i buy wood and paint and materials in general.

As far as the floor i think i was to do it in 3-5 sections of wood that way in the future if i need to i can replace on section or two sections if they go bad or rot or some unforseen accident happens and part of the floor needs replaced

A simple handsaw works great on the foam. Cut along the edges of the stringers and then pry out. You can also use a spade. Sorry I'm a little late with that. Good luck. Looks like you got a "good" free project.
