Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

The past week in Indiana has felt like spring so i got some work done on the boat. I got damn near most of the foam out and i got a motor stand built i just need to add some support to it.

Also i work at walmart and surprisingly walmart carrys alot of boating accessories in store, if you type in boats on wal-mart.com they carry thousands of boat parts. My discount card works online too so ill be ordering alot of stuff from there.

Your prolly going to want to add some more support to that OB stand. I fear your motor will flop/fold right over on that.

Cheers:)

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Hey guys, i got 95 perfect off all foam and debries out of boat, im not in the process of finishing my motor stand and pulling the motor off.

I still have to drill the holes in the stand for the motor to bolt too, are all out boards use the same hole pattern? if so what is it?

also when i take the motor off should i disconnect from the motor or the controls?

ill post pics later of my progress

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Just hang the motor on the stand and drill one quick hole per side. Run a 1/2 x 13 bolt with a big washer through it and put a put a nut and another washer on the back. One on each side will hold it until you are ready to put it back on the boat. Mine is hanging on the stand with a big C-clamp holding it on.

Take the controls off at the motor, shift cable comes off from shifting linkage, throttle cable comes off from carb linkage. Electrics should be some sort of plug in with a hot wire to come off the solenoid and a ground on the block. Sorry, I forget youir motor brand and don't have time to look right now, or I'd be more specific.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

I didn't bolt my motor onto the stand. My transom bracket had a lip the went over the edge and i just set the motor up there. As long as its out of the way and not gonna get knocked or bumped; heck just lash the puppy on with some rope... that 90 has enough weight that the wind wont blow it off. Used the old batteries to counter balance the weight of the outboard. Also u work at wally world so pick up one of those kettle grill covers at $5 a pop and place it over the motor. Itll keep the elements off while on the stand Outboard on homemade stand.JPGPicture 005.jpg... just ignore that first stand it was a quick throw together while i built the one from the plans here on iboats

The industry standard is usually BIA bolt pattern

EDIT: Beat me to it! As stated unplug the easiest way possible that way there is no confusion when plugging it back up. The throttle cables come off the motor pretty easily... not sure about a Yamaha but my 'Rude had a plug inside the cowling that was clamped together for the electronics; pretty straight forward. When i started i bought myself a box of sandwich bags and labeled everything from screws to cables. Leave yourself a map in case u get lost!

Pretty sure everything u should have to disconnected ive circled in red but again im no yahama expert just trying to help out... Im sure someone will correct me if im wrong.

Browsed through your thread. Great first boat! You are probably killing a lot of people currently re-decking with the pics of the metal superstructure. Looks like you're done with the foam fiascoes - but for future reference a drywall saw (a handsaw about the size and shape of a butcher knife) and a flat-bar(a carpentry crow-bar type tool) are inexpensive and effective on Styrofoam, though laborious.

I once had a late 60's early 70's 18' Crestliner(fiberglass) sharp V-hull closed-bow with a 100hp straight 6 Mercury outboard. It was probably the second most favorite boat I've had. I spent countless hours skiing and exploring the Missouri river with it. Did a complete restoration and then later went through it again loading it with bells and whistles which I never really got to enjoy because I was doing consulting gigs around the country and didn't want to drag it along. Throughout your restoration try to keep focused on the reason you wanted the boat for - to go boating. Its easy to get caught-up modifying and improving the design of your boat. (I think Oops! set a precedent for epic modifications) Great boating weather will come early this season - it looks like you are on schedule.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

I got the motor off today and on to the stand.
We did not bolt it to the stand the weight of the motor is keeping it on the stand, only took four of us to get it from the boat to the stand.

Only bad news is that teh steering cable is definitely shot and i will need to buy a new one

I would suggest through bolts to hold the horozintal pieces to the uprights if you don't already have them in there - That sucker looks heavy.

I started sanding today, its actually going pretty smoothly i would much rather sand then to pick out foam.

It took me about a month or so to get most of the foam out so but i didn't work on it every day its nice to be doing something different now and having motivation again to get the boat finished.

Paint removal is just ahead of trailer fixin' - Both are a pain. Maybe poured foam is in the mix too. At least you got out of the boat and are working on the outside. Are you going to bare AL or just a scuff to paint over?

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Im going to bare all, you cant tell in the pic but the areas that i did are bare now even tho it looks white. Im going to take prolly all that i can to bare. Its coming off pretty easily and its really not to hard i dont think itll take to long i just hope the bottom comes off as easy as top of the sides were.

I bought some more sand paper after work and i bought some masks i dont want paint in my nose in mouth

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

This is a little off topic for the progress of my boat, but for my interior i had planned on from the beginning to put two pedestal seats for the driver and passenger seats and im not sure what im doing for the back seats. As many of you know i work at wal-mart yesterday at work i had to take some boxes down to the sporting good department and glanced at the boat stuff i noticed they had clearance tags on two boat pedestals and with some investigation i found out we are not carrying those in the store anymore, so on my break i bought the last two pedestals and the spinning seat plates. The pedestals cost $13 a piece and the plates cost $5 a piece it was a great deal i had to buy them now why they were so cheap! they also raise up and down too

Haha ill try! but if he has paint, which will basically be free for me, i really cant turn down that. Thatll save me anywhere from $100-200.
I have confidence in him, he painted my dads golf cart did an amazing job, he also restored a 1963 corvette to pristine condition for his son a few years back. Him drunk would prolly do a better job than me sober!
