Thank you! the old cable is currently under the boat, didnt bother to move it cause its junk any ways, can i measure that cable before i order or should i actually measure the path in the boat like the picture shows?

Theoretically the old cable should have some numbers on it saying how long it is.

Couple questions hoping for a fast response.
I found etching primier and bought some, got the stripe off the boat just need to do a little more sanding.
Im hoping to put down the etching primer tomorrow or wednesday depending on the weather, read somewhere i need to do an acid was before? what is this and what do i need.
Also theres a float switch on sale for really cheap at work ill attach a pic, will i need one of this and if so what does it do?! I used some stripping agent and got the stripe off it worked like a charm ill attach a pic!

Quickest response I can give you is on the 'float switch'...you wire it between the bilge pump and the power switch, that makes it an automatic on/off pump...there are a couple of ways to wire it in...

One way is to put it directly between the power switch and the bilge pump...this way makes it automatic only...

the other way is to wire it in with a two position switch, what this does is allows you to keep it in automatic mode most of the time, but if you need it to be on all the time, you can bypass the float switch and have the bilge pump on all the time, say in an emergency or if the float switch should fail...

If you need more info, let me know or post in the electrical section of the forum for different ways to wire it up...

As far as an acid wash on an aluminum hull, I have heard of some guys using some kind of mix with vinegar and I think water, to pre-wash their hull before spraying with zinc-chromate primer...but you might want to wait on them that know to be sure...or check on the net for "acid washing aluminum"

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Is the float switch really needed? its marked down to $4.00 and is normally $14.96 which i think is a steal if i actually need it. $4 wont hurt the bank so if you guys think i need it ill get it.
i got rustoleum self etching primer is that same thing as zinc chromate primer? It says it works on bare metal and is used to prevent rust.

Also there was some old snaps screwed in the hull from an old boat cover i just took them out and im going to fill the holes with JB weld. should i lay down the etching primer then fill holes or fill holes then lay down etching primer or does it matteR?

You don't really need the float switch, but if you are out on the water and for whatever reason, water starts to come in the hull and you don't notice, the automatic feature of the float switch will help keep that particular worry out of your head...in the end it is a personal choice, but for me any redundancy in a boat that costs so little, is cheap insurance against one more thing that can bite you in the you know what...

Double check on the etching primer, even though it may be good for use on aluminum, it may not be good for marine use...I don't know for sure and would wait for someone with more knowledge about this to jump in...

As far as making repairs...usually you should make any repairs on the bare metal, then prime...primer may create a barrier to the repair and prevent it from adhering properly...

make sure you wipe down the hull before painting it too so you get all of the dust and stuff off of it first.I think I read to use water and vineger together but Im sure someone can better advise you on whats best to use.

A good basic acid wash is a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. Wash and let dry then rins with warm soapy water. Then a final wipe down with acetone and a light coating of the SE primer. Does NOT need to be Total coverage. Should be somewhat opaque. You should then do a Total coat or two of Bare Metal primer before applying the Final Color coats. Some good info in the Paint your Boat link at the bottom of my signature.

I followed your link when i bought the paint, i've read plenty of good comments and post by you WG so i trust you!

Do i need to sand the valspar primer before my color paint and do i need to add acetone and harder to the primer?
Also what happens if i just roll the paint on and then let dry and roll aonther coat with out rolling and rolling or rolling and tipping, im just curious. i would rather ask 100 questions than to ask a few and mess up!

Im about to do the last bit of sandign then wash and then its time for SE primer and maybe a coat of metal primer.

Wash with the acid mix, wash with soapy water then rinse and let dry then wipe down wtih acetone and apply SE correct?
Do i need to add anythign to the primer or do i just pour it into the pan and go? also do i need to roll and roll the primer or is one roll good?

Finally making progress! I got the boat etching primed! then i got the metal primer on as well! Hopefully tomorrow(Saturday) I will paint the final white and red coats! Do i need to sand the primer or do anything before i paint the white and red on? I think i pretty much get the idea of roll and roll and how to make it smooth. I doubt ill make it prefect but i will try my best! as long as it looks good from a few feet away i will be happy! Im just not sure if i need to do anything to the primer before i paint.

Woodonglass recommended doing a wet primer scuff with a Scotchbrite pad in a recent post. I don't think it can hurt to give a little tooth to the promer.

Did you get the float switch? I put two pumps in mine, one auto 600 gph and one manual 500 gph. I wired the auto directly to the battery with no dash switch so it's always ready to go for a no brainer since I won't forget to arm it. Part of my pre-launch is reach under the transom and lift the float for a quick pump test.

Keep plugging away, JP. It will be nice the hull right side up again after paint.
