Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Does anyone have any suggestions for something to make knee buck boards for the gun wales? Wood, of course, is a known but would like to use something that will hold up to the weather and be cost effective. (AKA Cheap) I found out the value of cleaning the boat after fishing. I spilled bait squid and fish on the floor, walked on it, tracked all over the floor and let it dry for several days. That was some terribly hard stuff to scrub off today!

As is now.

LX,
That sure is a lot of holes. When I put mine back together I will have to make sure I seal it well.
Keep up the great work.

Squid?? Fishing?? All right, put that beast to work!....:p

So, how did the fishing go? Lets see some pics....;)

I always clean the boat early the next morning after sitting out all night. I do rinse the motors, but just hose down the hull and the deck and then go clean fish...the boat gets cleaned the next day...you noticed I said I had to go clean fish,,,:D

Well the fishing wasn't a serious trip, only a couple of hours. The grand daughter caught four uglies and I caught two. My neighbor caught two or three and no pictures were taken! Rats! Forgot the camera in the Tahoe.

Mostly cruising around. Found out I'm going to need two anchors in order to keep the stern from crashing into the bridge pilings. My bow anchor is too light and wouldn't hold in the tide.

Being my cooling is sea water I always run fresh water thru motor and wash hull down. Ron

Guess I was wrong about the fit of the cuddy cabin cushions. After getting around to putting them in, they fit just fine.

Does anyone know were I can buy cup holder block off plates for the engine cowling? I know that I can buy wall plates, for wall door knob repair, but want something that I can remove and put the cup holder back in when needed. This would keep the rain water from draining into the rear bilge when boat is not being used.

I guess I'm making headway on the rain water leak problem. We had heavy rains here last night and I "only" pulled about 12 gallons of water from bilge and fuel tank areas. I would guess that maybe out of that only 1/2 gallon came from fuel bays. I just can't figure out how water is getting into the fuel bays with all the new wood and fiberglass I put in there. I'm sure there is no water leaking in from the rub rail area because I caulked under the lip and all the holes. I have not put the rub rail back on as of yet. My next step is to caulk all the bright work where the railing bases are attached to the gun wale. Even though the windows were covered I will caulk all of them just to make sure. Ron

ONE DAY I'LL BE ABLE TO USE MY BOAT INSTEAD OF WORKING ON IT 24/7!

12 gals seems like alot of water..........what about your scuppers/hoses? I replaced my hoses this year as they were dry rotted!

I agree. It is a lot of water to be collected from rain water. But that is down from the 20 gallons I got before. I looked in the cuddy this morning and the cushions were dry. There was water on the ledge where the floor pan meets the hull. Seems most of the water in going into the rear bilge now from cup holders, exhaust vents and rear seat drainage at the stern. Another area is the mateing area where the engine cowl closes against the stern inspection cover. There is a channel that will funnel rain right down into the rear bilge. I think I will use a weather seal on the mateing areas where the engine cowl closes against it's closure.

LXKid,
How does your gas line come into your tank coffin? What I am asking is ? Can water run down the outside of your hose and run into your tank coffin? On the older BW, they did a very poor job of blocking water from entering the tank coffin. I need to reword that. They did nothing to prevent water from entering the coffin from the gas line.

My fill lines are pretty well enclosed. As a precaution I'll unscrew the fill line fittings and caulk under them. Thanks for the suggestion.

I guess last night's rain test wasn't valid. I discovered this morning I left two covers off that probably let water in from the walk around run off. I took them off yesterday morning, for ventilation, and forgot to screw them back in. I don't know what you call the covers but you can see them in the pics. I installed rubber weather seal around the engine cowl and went ahead and put door guards over the cup holders.

LX, The fuel line channel that is molded into the boat is what isn?t blocked off on my boat. Any water inside the boat can drain into this channel and empty into the tank coffin.

The cushions look great by the way. Do you have the door to the cabin?

My fill hoses are up under the walk around and caulked. The only way water can effect them is if the fill fittings leak up under them and run down the hoses but then would be stopped by the caulking where it goes into the seat pedistal Not much chance of rain getting into the fuel bays from there. I guess what I'm trying to say is, where the hoses go down is above floor level. They are behind the two bricks on the right.

LX,
Leaks can be tough to find. Perhaps you should use a garden hose to spray specific areas to narrow down your search. That way you don't have to tear around your boat sealing everything.
Just a suggestion.

The boat has been neglected so many years and has multiple leaks. I already knew that the bow rail bases are loose and leaking some water under all of them. Problem is they won't unscrew because they were put on with machine screws and nuts and can't get at the nuts to get them off. Being that I now have the boat running great I want to take care of all the other problems. I would rather take time now and caulk everything and get it sealed. I've been keeping a trailer-able boat cover on it for the past year and now is the time to caulk all areas that are or could leak. I already have used the garden hose and is a good tool in finding leaks. Ron

It just started raining "cats and dogs!" I caulked the bow railing bases, plates on cup holder holes, rubber seal on engine cowl, closed everything up and I guess I'll see how much good I did with all of today's efforts.

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Guess I'm making some headway once again. I only vacuumed 2-1/2 gallons this morning. Most of that came from rear bilge rain. Some is still coming from the front bilge and a little from the fuel bays. I'm sure most water came from the two engine exhaust vents. Gonna have to make a deflector shield that will sit atop the vents so rain won't fall directly into them. I also think that one of my new floor drain hoses may be leaking. Maybe I didn't get the hose seated well or the seal around the drain is leaking.

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Another heavy rain last night. I had raised the bow up about 4-5 inches so everything will run to rear bilge and the transom plug installed. Placed duct tape over both the rear engine side vents to see how much water I could stop from raining in. Checked the rear bilge this morning and only a few ounces in the bilge. Pulled the plug on the front to rear bilge line and nothing flowed out! YEAH! Pulled fuel tank bay plugs and nothing came out! Double "Yeah!" I have definitely made substantial headway on identifying rain leakage problems. I think the small amount of water, that had leaked into the bilge, was from the rear seats drainage and the secondary engine access cover. Ron

I used red cedar for my coaming boards on my boat, cost me $15. I know, I'm cheap :) Hey, gets the job done
