The greatest coffee warmer of all times award goes to U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wooohooo!!! That's a huge accomplishment on iBoats!! Jasoutside, eat your heart out.

SP & JBC, thanks as well.

So here we go......

I got my mix table all setup,

And followed the advice of Wood on my ratios. (1 oz harder, 2 cubs paint, 3/4 cup acetone) Mix frequently for 30 minutes. Then practiced on a sheet of cardboard to get the hvlp gun setup right. Wood, you were right that stuff just flows like a dream!

It was going so well I almost burned up the compressor motor. I got about half the hull painted when the motor on the compressor didn't want to start back up. (it's electric) after letting it sit for a few minutes it tried to run but quit right away. Carp! now what? I got a double batch of paint mixed up and half a hull covered. For once I was glad I'm in cold Michigan. I had the brilliant idea to put the compressor outside (it's 30 degrees with 20+ mph winds) It fired up and ran fine to fill the tank. I then made a point of stopping spraying everytime the compressor kicked back on to let it refill. This worked like a dream and I was able to finish the job. A little slower than I wanted but coat number one is on my girls new dress!

and now for my crappy paint shop skills showing where the green line will be. Judge, Wood, GT1M thanks all for the advice on how to proceed with the stripe. I've decided that given the location and the fact that I have such a good transition point that an edge won't matter, that the easiest way to do this will be to paint the entire hull white then tape off and paint the green after the fact. I can soften the ridge with rubbing compount or cover it with pin stripe tape if I need to.

Ok, I need a lawyer!!! I'm blind and it's all your fault!!! The glare from that High Gloss Shine off that White boat has made me go Blind. I guess I can't sue though, My wife says it's called snow blindness and it's just temporary. Wow!!! Very nice job. Hard to tell from pics but did you get any significant Orange Peel? Runs? From what I can see, she looks really GREAT!!!! What size is the motor on your compressor? How big's the tank? What Pressure did you use at the gun? Gimme some details Man!!!!

Wood, if my son had been home today I would have had him take a pic with me wearing the welding helmet just for you, lol The gloss is crazy! I was wondering though, is she a virgin again with all that white on her? Just so I don't keep you wondering, no orange peel, no run's, no drips. A few splats from a dirty gun while waiting for the compressor to catch up. I learned to wipe the tip with a mineral spirits rag when waiting. Problem solved. The motor is a 1/4 horse and the tank is an 11 gal. I'm running 35 psi at the gun. I have my WOG scotch brite pads ready for tomorrow and hope to turn and burn a second coat this weekend on the old girl. I have a spare 5 gal tank for the compressor I'm thinking of hooking up in series with the compressor and see if that helps it not work quite so much. Even if I have to keep doing it the slow way at least I can keep moving for now. I may have to start a new compressor fund though,

Thanks EZ, JBC and SP! I may have found my long lost talent. Shootin with an hvlp gun seems like a natural thing to me. It just feels right, lol

KDavid1, You are welcome to lurk all you want around here. Just don't laugh too hard when I start doin stupid stuff. I'm just jealous you're ready to launch and I'm just at the beginning.

The first coat seems dry tonight. I managed to keep the garage around 70 all afternoon. Tomorrow, jr and I will try and attack her with scotch brite pads and if we're lucky get coat number 2 on her.

I hope everyone elses weekend is going as well as ours in dry dock!

Yep I forgot to tell you about keeping the tip clean. I had to do the same thing. I also kept a piece of single strand wire handy to keep the nozzle and and air holes clear of any debris. If it's not to much of a hassle I'd recommend hooking up the additional tank. It WILL make a world of difference. I used the boat and trailer painting and the possibility of painting my sons 1968 Hippie VW Van as and excuse to by a 5 hp 60 Gallon compressor two years ago. Man o' Man what a difference between my 3 hp 21 gallon direct drive Coleman.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

That there is looking mighty PURDY PARDNER!

I think the green stripe will prevent her from being a "virgin", tho...

Great job and good thinking on putting the compressor in the deep freeze to keep it going...

Just a thought on the extra capacity tank...it will give you a little more air volume, but the compressor is just going to start right up as soon as the pressure drops, and it may never shut off, trying to keep the extra tank full...

The Green stripe is going to look really cool...

Like I mentioned, do a small test panel and test the color masking method, to make sure you don't get any bleed under, even with the body lines...

Question?
How long do you need to let the paint cure before you can flip it and be safe from causing any marring from the cradle...?

You are kroozin now...:D

IMHO 48 Hours. With Colder Temps Maybe longer.

Personally I would give it a week...that paint dries to the touch pretty quick but the longer it has to cure the harder it gets....better safe then sorry!

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

I will most likely give her that week Judge. We could easily get away with the 48 hrs that Wood suggested but given our temps and the fact that we have nothing but time at the moment, it won't hurt a bit to let her cure for a week. Especially if we push hard this week and get a couple more coats on her. Then she can sit until the following weekend when I can round up some muscle for the flip. We're going to do a 2 step process. Step one will be flip her onto a carpet next to the cradle then put the side back on the cradle along with some carpet scraps on all rails. Then we'll lift her back on her home for the rest of the rebuild.

Besides, I'm trying to work out how I'm going to make a side trip to see GT1M the first week of April. My wife and I are driving down to Clearwater Beach for the week and I think I have her convinced to make a day trip to see Miami beach  Then meet up with GT1M and make a resin transaction, lol. At the prices he's getting I gotta try and make it happen.

We scuffed her up with scotch brite pads today. The plan at the moment is to attempt a second coat tomorrow evening. Try and scuff her up again Tuesday evening then try and get coat #3 on Wednesday evening. We are supposed to have temps in the high 50's Wednesday and I gotta take advantage of not working the heater so hard to heat the garage when I can.

That paint with the hardner it in is so awesome! It is so hard already. I kept the garage at 70 degrees for 7 hrs yesterday after I sprayed her. I also kept the ceramic heater under the hull the entire time. I think that really helps keep the hull working temps more consistant, even warm to the touch.

Hope everyone had a good dry dock weekend.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

sounds good...a few days after my paint dried I could still poke a nail into and leave a dent, but now after a couple months, I have to really push hard and drag to even scratch it....If you can flip it and set it down without causing much in the way of abrasion 48 hours will work, if it wont move youll be good, I just say err on the side of caution, especially since your planning to roll it

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

rumors of my demise are greatly exaggerated, lol - I know a few of you, ok maybe just Judge, might be wondering where I've been lately. well, life has been creeping into the project but I can't say it has been in a bad way. I have been training for a Marathon in April. I have made it to the peak 3 weeks of my training schedule and have just been too wiped out to spend any extra time on the boat in the past week. (I've run over 35 miles in the past 5 days.) I hope to spend enough time to get the final coat of white on the hull this weekend but I have another 28 miles scheduled over the next 3 days. I have enjoyed watching others progress and am jealous that I don't have more time. Judge, I'm livin through you right now on the boat building front, haha

Judge, it's not boring! you're pre-spashed, that's not even a hope for us at the moment, lol

I just found out my son get's out of work at 6pm tomorrow night so I informed him WE are working on the boat tomorrow night and I wanna get the last coat of white on. (I figure, worse case I can sit on a stool and boss him around if I can't walk by then, lol)
