I was thinking we should take over one of our local marinas, everyone bring your boats, beers, and babes and we could have us a good ole time!

I like the way you think Judge! Once we all splash we should plan that!

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

ok, the weekend was not an entire loss. It only took me that past 4 days but I managed to work in wet sanding and a final coat of the white today. At least it might be the final coat. When someone says it's all about the prep, they mean it. I did my normal wash, mix my paint, then while it's cooking give it a wash with acetone. then I started painting, it was so nice to be painting with out having to worry about the heater. It has been about 80f all weekend here, only about 40f degrees above normal, I'll take it. I couldn't figure out why I was spending so much time waiting on the paint to cook this time. Then I figured it out about half way through the hull. I had forgotten to wipe it down with the tack cloth. I have fuzz in quite a few spots on paint. I decided to finish the coat and we'll deal with the fuzz later. I may have to put one more coat on the very bottom. I didn't see too much on the sides, so I may just start taping off the areas for the green stripes and then deal with the bottom after I do them. We'll see.

anyways, here's what I really hope are the last pics of a just plain white hull from today.

I played around some more with the gun today and I am extremely happy with the spray pattern now. It is really starting to lay down a nice smooth finish.

Wood, you're the second person today to say basically the same thing. I'm moving on to the green stripes regardless at this point. Here's my question. If I scotch bright the bottom to get rid of the fuzz can I work my way back up to 1500/2000 grit then buff it out without another coat of paint?

You'll also be happy to know that HF has moving blankets on sale this week. I'm goint to go pick a couple up to use instead of carpet on the cradle. I think I'm still on target to flip her next weekend.

Brutha Craig,

wow dude that looks incredible! Your dialed in with the gun for sure!

Your always welcome if you find yourself in the Madison area!

It would be great to pick a central location and get as many resto iboats brethren together as possible... I've seen quite a number of iboats gatherings, and I think ours would be a hoot!

For sure on the buff out! But... IMHO I would just wet sand with the 3M and wouldn't worry bout it. But... I know You're anal like me.:p

I have serious white hull envy! Paint looks terrific ! Did you set up the extra air tank on the compressor?

Wow Craig, it is looking sharp...like WOG said, a little fuzz might be a good fish attractant...:D

If it really bugs you, should be able to knock it off with a little wet sand...start with a finer grit first, see how well it cuts, if it isn't cutting well enough, then move to the next coarser grit, and so on...use soapy water with your wet sand...and rinse often...

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Thanks all for the support and kudo's. I guess I am my own worst critic. Like Wood said, I'm a bit anal, it goes with my profession, lol.

In the light of a new day and cured paint I was able to knock most of the fuzz off and leave no trace just with my hand. I decided a light wet sand after it's all cured and a buff and no one will know the difference.

On to the project of the night. We are back in the 80's today and I didn't want to waste any of this great weather. so I taped her off and put down the first coat of GREEN stripe!

The plan was this, tape off about 1/2 inch away from my paint line with tape and paper. Being exact was not mandatory here just stay in the 1/2 inch zone. Then I came back and laid down a single line of tape exactly on my desired line. I used a plastic filler spreader to "set" the tape edge after it was all down where I wanted it. I only had one line that would be highly visible and I used a straight edge to pencil in my reference line to follow with the tape.

I cover anything I wanted to keep white with plastic sheeting just in case I had overspray.

Then I was able to shoot the green stripe

I let it dry while I was cleaning my gun up and then while it was still wet I carefully pulled off the edge piece of tape. This left a nice clean edge. I did have 1 smudge of green from my finger and one from a corner not sealed good. Using a clean rag dipped in mineral spirits I was able to clean both of these spots up and no one will ever know. The key was pulling the edge tape while it was wet. I'm leaving the rest of the boat covered in hopes of taping up the edges one more time tomorrow and shooting one last coat on the stripe.

I am excited with the outcome on this one.

Great idea with the tape held back 1/2" so it's just a one time cover up!
Keep up the good stuff!!

There's a major difference in looking at the pics in the begining and now.
Looks like a new boat. Great job. Good looking color scheme.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Gus, Sphelps, Decker... Thanks, I'm very pleased at this point.

Wood, THANKS & yup, first time with a boat. Years of building & painting models, anything with wood and as a kid, repainting and rebuilding bicyles. All thos experiences have paid off handsomly on the painting part.

Tonight I made the final push to finish up the green stripe. I retaped the outline, leaving about a 1/16th of an inch of white visible all the way around the original stripe. The plan here was to make the final edge both thinner and cleaner by not having to try and be exact on the original edge. I'm pleased with the outcome, what do you guys think?

oh, and just for comparison here is what we started with first.

and now onto the final results!

Now a few days of cure time then we'll flip her back right side up! Milestone 1, outer hull rebuild/recondition, DONE!
