Congrats on getting together. Looks like good times! There was a dive in Las Vegas near the Stratosphere casino that had GREAT cuban food. And I've been known to have a few La Cubana sands for breakfast or lunch, occasionally both.... Was seeing the BBE everything it was cracked up to be?

All this talk about 'hooked up' supplies. I don't see any supplies...... And when do we start to glass in some stringers?

Just for Sihts & giggles: What's the penalty for transporting HazMat materials across state lines?

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Finally home and glad that drive back from FL is over. 20+ hours and today was a beautiful Easter in Michigan. I loved my vacation and the time I got to spend with my wife at the beach. I hate to say it but meeting Gus and the Bassassin might have been the highlight of my trip!

No fair... You got to see and touch the Bassasin.....
{and meet Gus in person}

The bassassin and Gus were both so cool. It's weird to see a boat you know almost as well as your own for the first time.

OMG, Gus, you look just like one of my best friends in the whole World. Guy by the name of Chuck Green! Wow I gotta find a pic of him and post it. I think you'll agree. WOW, amazing resemblance. Looks like you guys had a great time. I'm Jealous.

I had never seen a picture of Gus before I met him but the minute I got out of my car I felt like I was meeting an old friend. We did have a great time and I can't wait to hook up with you some day Wood!

Yep looks like craigs got his share of that fla sunshine! Cool hat GT!

SP, I should have used spf 10000, that FL sunshine fried my *****

Brutha Bear, he was WAAAAYYYYY to kind to put me to work. I felt bad I didn't have more time to hang with him. I would have gladly lended a hand on the Bassassin for the afternoon.

JBC, What supplies you talkin about bro? The BBE was a bit deflated as Gus has been redesigning it in prep for his upcoming stringer work. I got to go in the BBE for a few and actually touch the Bassassin. It was so cool to ask questions and see her first hand. BTW that trailer that looked so cool on his thread was even more awesome in person. I will be copying some of his bunk design on mine after seeing how well the Bassassin sat on there!

I don't know what you're talking about transportin hazzardous materials and such  Why would I, such a kind meek law abiding citizen try and cheat the system like that? Or take such risk's just to save a few coin  ?

Just don't pull into any of those way stations !

SP, I avoid the man with a vengance

Ok, now that I'm safely home and got the yard cought back up, I guess I could show yall what the Easter bunny brought me

I don't have any clue how those things ended up in my garage, lol somebody must like me?

I'll be putting in my order with US Composites on Thursday (payday) for the rest of the materials I need! If all goes well you'll see some transom and stringer work begin this week. I'll also be postin pics of the trailer restore I started before I left on vacation. Right now I gotta go catch up on my other iBoats brothers progress while I was gone.

Big mucho grande gracious mi amigo Gustavo! You rock Brutha! It was a true pleasure hangin with you for the short time we had!

My Amigo, Craig...

I am so glad that you made the time to hang...I had the same feeling as you did...when you pulled up it was like an old friend coming to visit...I had such a great time, and like you, my only regret is that we didn't have more time and I didn't get to put you to work on the 'Bassassin'...:p

Very Happy you and the Mrs. had a great time and are back home safe and sound...Next time, plan on visiting the bottom half of the state and get to the Keys...I know some good eating down there, too...;)

Now, get that bright shiny hull filled in with some hazardous materials...I'll be racing to catch up...:D

Best Regards,
Your Amigo...

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Ok, it's been a busy week since back from vacation. Work has been crazy trying to catch up and what little extra time I had, I've put in on the trailer without time to visit iBoats. I have started wirebrushing and sanding the trailer in prep for painting while I wait to have the rest of my glassing supplies. This weekend we managed to pickup some wood and get the transom cut out and glued. It's curring in the garage as we speak.

Ok, time to catch up the pics, this might take a couple of posts so be patient :)

1st up pre-vacation,

I started working on the trailer that the PO had bastardized. Instead of fixing the original coupler, they welded a piece of 2" bar on top of it and bolted a coupler on! what the heck? Here is the pic after I unbolted the add a coupler

The winch is a rusted mess and the jack is a piece of carp.

and the rest of the trailer isn't in much better shape.

Then remove the original coupler

ahhh, much better :)

Now what else did we find? oh yeah, the PO even welded the keel roller mount on.

So, in the interest of fixing things right, I ground that off as well. (PO didn't even clean the paint off before welding)

Then we took off the fenders, steps, bunks and the rest of the roller brackets followed by the winch mount and jack. PO continued their quality craftsmanship by using no less the 4 different bolt/nut sizes on all the roller brackets.

PO ran into something and crunched on of the side steps.

I straightend as best I could. I don't know what he hit but as strong as that metal was I know he hit it HARD!

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Thursday I put in the order for the rest of my glassin supplies as planned. I can't wait for them to arrive now. We are finally to the point that we need em. Last night while my son was at work I made a cardboard template for the transom. The original transom was 3/4 in all the way acrros with a second layer across the middle 33 or so inches. Knowing that we're planning on pulling the kids on tubes when done I am beefing up the transom to 1 1/2 in all the way across.

Here's the pattern on our plywood ready for tracing.

Today I had my son help me and cut out the transom pieces, dry fit and glue it up!

All hands, er I mean clamps on deck!

Oh, and did anyone notice we made a set of WOG clamps?

now to let the transom cure and we will be off to the races. It feels like we are going to be making a lot of head way pretty quickly for a bit.

I hope everyone has had as good a weekend as we have had.

Wow Brutha Craig! I was starting to get worried that you had fallen off the iboats radar, but now I see you have been one busy bee...

Awesome progress...glad to hear all is falling into place!

You just gotta love PO's...:facepalm:...real classy work on the trailer mods...no problem though, you got a real good handle on the necessary corrections...

Taking the Admiral to munch on some of our good local BBQ ribs...holler at you later...

Peace!

Nice work on the trailer there CW. I just read the part on your visit to see the one and only GT1M......cool stuff.

I know what you mean about PO and trailers. Mine used different size threads too on the rollers. Also used a torch to cut the holes in frame...all are out of alignment too...sheees...I will get it fixed eventually though.

Glad to see you and GT1M got hooked up. Good looking pic of you two fellows.
You sure did some great work on the trailor. Looked like a lot of grinding. At least grinding on metal doesn't itch.
Nice fit on the transom.
Keep up the good work.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Thanks guys. Yeah PO's are fun aren't they? Why can't they be more like us? lol Yeah the grinding on the trailer is much better without the itch. I'm about half way through the frame grinding. Haven't had much time this week so far but that should change on Friday. Tomorrow our US Composites order arrives with the rest of our fiberglassing materials. I have managed to unclamp the transom and hope to get it ready for install over the weekend. I also ordered the zipper foot and needles for the Morse today. Time to start thinking about seats as well I think.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Yupper this is gonna be a big big weekend folks! I got my USC order today. I routed and sanded the edges of the transom tonight. Sunday I run my first ever marathon and I figure Saturday while I'm resting it will be time to learn how to install a transom.

Time to research the process on Woodys pages and figure it out  The main thing I can't remember, and I know this is kinda stupid but, what the heck do I apply the resin with? I know I've read about a roller but I can't remember. It seems like there was a special roller or something you had to do to the roller... ugh!!! I gotta go run and reseach this... so much to try and do now

Oh, and the most important thing of the weekend... Rumor has it Wood is gonna splash on Sunday....

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

2" chip brushes, roller to apply resin (1/2 normal size or normal size), and a BUBBLE BUSTER (is this the tool you were trying to remember?). It's for after you lay down the 1708 or CSM and get it wetted out. To roll out the bubbles.....

Check recent posts @ GT1M's thread, a few different styles & some tips for holding acetone (tall bud vase w/ a large plywood base to prevent tip overs)to soak it between layups.

Unless you meant the PB or PL to adhere the ply transom to the inside of the transom's fiberglass skin. Then use a trowel.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Thanks JBC, it was the roller for applying the resin. I got the bubble roller with my USC order today. I thought I read about trimming or doing something to keep the nap from comming off in the resin.
