Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Belated thanks SP, Gus and Troop! It's been busy since last week and I had to choose between workin on the boat and surfing iboats....

So I chose getting something done, lol... So, here is my updates from last Thursday through tonight.

Thursday I made up some funky PB... In a nutshell, I ran out of cabosil about 3/4 of the way thick enough so I used microballons I had to thicken it the rest of the way... It turned out more like rasberry PB

Once that cured, on Saturday, I cleaned and prepped the hull for the final big push...

Then I spent the rest of Saturday cutting out 1708 to finish tabbing in the main stringers and new bulkhead.

I tabbed in the bulkhead,

then I finished the starboard side stringer and capped all the stringers with a final coat of csm.

Then tonight I accomplished a major milestone! Yup, we're ready for a deck! I PL 5200'd and screwed the cross braces in place.

I am almost ready for a deck!!! I have the 2 part foam from US Composites already waiting. Next weekend I hope to get some plywood to make a temporary deck to use while I pour the foam.

Now for the icing on the weekend.... in the true bottom feeder tradition of Jasoutside, I have found a completely free to me boat!

She sure a beaut, isn't she

I got the admiral to agree to give me a 48 hour window to bring it home. The plan is to pick it up Thursday evening. I was able to take Friday off and have a friend who has volunteer to assist me with stripping anything of value. The main reason I'm picking it up is for all the seat foam... I'll have more than enough to do all the seats in my boat.

Then I will beg forgiveness of the fiberglass gods and, gulp, sawzaw it into small pieces to haul it off to the dump. I've already called them and if I bring it out whole they charge $500 min for a 16+ foot boat (this ones 23') I then asked them what if I bring a load of fiberglass and foam from a boat rebuild project and they said it was $55 for the first ton, lol

Pic's of the process to come...

Have a great week everyone!

Nice score on the free boat...should be able to score some good booty off of it...and I for one not only don't mind seeing it chopped up, but demand some pics or vids of you guys having some raucous fun while tearing it to bits...I know when Jas comes back he'd be proud of you...
Great work on the structural progress on the Sylvan...and have Fun!

Fab job on the pre deck glass work ! Ya know I always wanted a fiberglass deck boat . If it were an o/b set up I would try and save it from the shredder . You could always turn it into a kool disco hot tub deck boat . That,s still on my bucket list !

Make sure and scavenge and CL every thing you can. The Rub Rail might bring a pretty Penney!!!! You'll be surprised what you can get for all that comes off of her. Sawzall and CircSaw will make short work of the demo.

Thanks guys! I plan on scavenging everything I can possibly put on CL. extreme you can have first dibs on the gauges if I decide I don't want them. I'll post up here anything I plan on selling in case anyone is interested.

Oh, and for Gus and Jasoutside, when his self imposed exile is over, I will document through pics and maybe (that's a big maybe) video.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Happy Friday all! just a quick note to say I did pick up the boat and a buddy of mine and I spent the day stripping every usable part off it. The good news is it was an IO and the entire OMC upper and lower outdrive are there and in really good shape. We managed to get it stripped and chopped up down to the floor today. The rest was a block of ice and with the potential to make some really good $$ on the outdrive I have dropped the rest behind the shed to thaw out so I can complete the tear down and chop job.

I have to admit I'm feeling a little dirty chopping up what turned out to be a really good hull but I have no money into it.

Pic's to come later this weekend, I'm too darn tired to upload them now.

Ok, here is the long awaited weekend update. It was a huge weekend without any forward progress on the rebuild but a lot of progress on parts.

Thursday evening I picked up the beauty.

Thank the good lord the PO had a tractor with a bucket and I borrowed a tilt bed trailer. There were a few interesting moments but we managed to get it loaded up without any fatalities.

Friday morning I got up bright and early, bundled up and went out to get started. Here's a couple of before inside pics.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

oh, bear with me folks. I got lots of pics and can only do a few per post.

My buddy Doug took the day off to help me as well. I am so thankful for his help! there is no way I would have got as far as I did without his help.

Let the deconstruction begin!

Let's strip off everything I can use, sell or try to sell.

here's Doug helping remove all the rails and out hull fixtures.

I think I've found it's problem, there seems to be a small hole in the hull

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

a couple fast forward deconstruction pics.

The last pic was as far as we went on chopping up the hull. From the deck down it was a block of ice. Especially in the engine compartment where there seemed to be a lot of usable parts. It appeared the previous PO (the PO said the engine was gone when he got it) had ripped out the engine and left everything else intact, almost like they intended to replace the engine and never got around to it. The next morning I hauled off all the scrap created by the deconstruction to my garbage drop for a grand total cost of $35. Oh, and Friday night/ Saturday early morning we got 3 inches of snow, so the rest of the hull is in cold storage until it thaws around here which will be around June at the rate we're going

Here's the haul so far before I got all the foam out of the seats.

here's all the foam I salvaged... Yup, more than enough for what I need..

And a close up of the dash gauges I kept (it was faster to just cut the console out for now)

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

here is the switches on the console,

81c8967fbf900e2cc2cc7bb4d303bd87_zpsece967e4.jpg

I also kept 2 sweet bucket seats and bases... I have no use for them on this boat but my bro in law has a pontoon that could use a new captains chair.

http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h362/craigweaver/4Wins%20deconstruction/8c22f44c0dd2d3cf27bf4756aeb3dfda_zps887a57a6.jpg[img]

Other than the entire upper and lower outdrive, the steering cable, throttle & shift cables are in great shape. The tilt and trim pumps are intact and I saved all the hardware I could remove from this boat. This little find may just fund the rest of this project if I play my cards right. I also kept as much of the rub rail that was in good shape. I also learned that this boat was so much better constructed than mine at the factory. It's amazing what I have learned in this process and was able to show my friend and observe thanks to the learning curve on iboats.

Bring on the next weekend so I can get back to the Sylvan!
