Nice job on the demo . Man thats a lot of foam ! Foam ain,t cheap so that alone will save ya some cake !

yeah, the foam was the entire reason I got this. I'm cheap, I figured my labor was easier than $$ to come up with. Everything else is a bonus on here.

yup lots of goodies...and looks like you had fun to boot!!

well, it was fun for the first 8 or so hours, after that it started becoming work. I had a deal with the admiral to have it be a one day only mess with it hauled off to the dump the next day

Looking good CW, nice pile of salable goods.

Thanks JBC!

Thanks Gus! I hope so, gotta fertilize the $$ tree for the big push.

Nice score CW. Jasoutside will like this boat..:D

Thanks Decker, I'm hoping it gets him on the bottom feeder level more than the chop up a glasser level, lol

lol, sure can be Woody! I might go try and get some pic of the outdrive assembly still on the boat for everyone to see what's I got here.

Recommendation. I'd soak ALL that foam down with 50/50 mix of water and bleach to make sure it was Mold Free. You can Wring it fairly dry and hang it outside for a day or so and it WILL dry out.

wow, you must be reading my mind Wood! :lalala::clock:

I was going to ask what if any prep for the foam I should do. It's all currently drying out and thawing in the rafters of the garage. In a few weeks once it warms up a bit, I'll do exactly as you suggested.

ok, settle down now kiddies  I'm just kidding... It's a temporary deck to pour the foam, I had some 1/4" osb laying around I thought would be perfect for cutting a template for the real deck. I've hated the idea of cutting holes in the final deck so I decided this would be a good way to work around that and still pour the foam. When I'm done my new deck will have no holes other than the PL coated screw holes.

Happy hump day folks!

How will you get the foam to release from your 1/4" temp deck? Plastic?

Yes, I was planning on sparingly stapling some plastic to the back side of the temp deck so when I pull it up hopefully, the plastic stays or goes but the osb comes up easily.

I plan on photo documenting the entire process so win or lose we all can learn something.

Wait , you mean your not supposed to use 1/4 " osb for a boat deck ? I would think that and some latex paint would be fine ..:laugh:

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Now you know I am going to be watching this process real carefully...
I take it you have read "oops!" suggestions on foaming? Here is a link... http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...sion-progress-pics-234392-15.html#post3205843
Laying down some PVC pipes to act as drainage channels, along with plastic sheeting down in the cavity before pouring the foam...Placing your false deck down, pouring the foam, remove the deck, pull out the foam "plug", take out the PVC pipe, reinstall the "plug"...so on and so on...at least that is my plan...
I personally think that two layers of plastic sheeting are a cheap safety net to hopefully prevent any leakage due to perforation and permanent bonding between the hull and false deck...also, make sure if you use the PVC pipe, to plug both ends with duct tape or rags...BECAUSE...that expanding foam is STRONG! when it starts to expand...it can easily lift several hundred pounds, so if the false deck isn't securely fastened, and being that its only 1/4", very well braced, it will Blow and Bow, even before the stuff starts to expand out of the vent holes...
Let me finish off by saying...THANKS! for being the guinea pig;)...I can't wait till I get to this point...
Happy Thursday, bro!:D

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Is there a reason why you would have to pull the pvc back out ? If you can figure a way to keep the ends open then why not leave it .
Maybe I am missing something .. :redface::noidea::pop2:

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Gus, I'm thinking a modified oops plan. The original foam stopped about 8 - 10 inches shy of the center stringer. So what I'm planning is to build a false stringer about 6 inches from the center stringer screwed to the temp deck. No pvc, just a drain channel on both sides of the center stringer. Once I remove the temp deck, I'll remove the false stringer and away we go, or so that's the plan. Like I said, I'll take pics and share with all so we can learn from my lessons.

Right now the plan is a 2" fill hole every 16" on center in each stringer cavity starting at 8".

SP, the only thing I can think of if you leave the PVC is that is one more surface against the foam to hold moisture. But then again, we are all pretty anal about this stuff. Our worst work will most likely outlast the factory work by 20 years in most cases.... :D

Hey, also, Happy Thursday Bro as well Gus!! And I don't mind making mistakes for all of us. If we save one of us a few $$ with pics and results along the way then we've done well.

While I'm at it. How much weight you all think I should hold the temp deck down with? or would you just screw it down and PL the holes after then lay down the perm deck?

CW....my experience says to make sure you have two holes on the decking for each cavity...if not as soon as the pressure in the cavity is equal to the pressure exerted by the foam, it will stop expanding...just my 2 cents worth....have a fast friday and great weekend!

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

or would I be even better with 3 holes for every 16"? 1 @ 8 inch for fill and 2, 4-6 inches out each from the center hole for pressure release?
