Pencil in where the stripe is gunna be and then just make sure and get good coverage over the pencil line. Leave the rest in primer for the stripe.

Hey, GT1M, that's not fair, you're supposed to be letting me steal your ideas, lol... thanks for the compliment.

Great idea Wood, I'll follow that advice.

How much primer did you use for 1rst and 2cnd coat?

Thanks, sphelps! We are at about 1/2 gallon after both coats. We started with a gallon and while it will be more than plenty for the outer hull, I'm pretty sure we'll use the rest up somewhere as we build this baby out.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Stayed home, cough - cough, sick today :) took the oppourtunity to use the extra time to wet sand the boat down. Now if the gods don't hate me for playing hooky today I might actually have time to get the final coat of primer on tomorrow night.

Question, is the purpose of wet sanding primer more to get any goobers off, drips, runs, etc or is it to get the paint as smooth as possible? It has a real light "spray paint" texture to it. I do have to say overall I'm extremely pleased with the primer result so far. No pics today, we've had enough of the primer photo's. If all goes well tomorrow I'll have some pics of color coat on this weekend.

Wood, I took a look at the area I plan on painting green and it has a ridge along the body line where I want the transition from white to green. I'll use that as my visual for painting and then put a pencil line aft where I want the stripe to end at the back corners.

I was wondering , Is 3 coats of primer necessary or is this the norm? :)

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

sphelps, I think I read where 2 was the minimum number of primer coats. I sanded through a few spots and our first coat was really light. I just want one more good coat to make sure it's an even coverage. My basic theory is that the more even the primer color the more even the final color. I also read 3 coats for the final color coat, but being the anal retentive OCD pain in the arse that I am I'll end up with 1 or 2 more most likely, lol

2-3 coats is fine...really if your primer coat is even and sanded smooth, it makes the rest of the job that much nicer....I think your hull is looking sharp, also in my experience I found that taping off where you plan to paint your accent, then painting base color, remove tape and tape off for the accent color is easier...getting that hardened enamel line smoothed out so the base color doesn't leave its own line in the accent color was a pain in the arse...tape is cheap and fast...extra sanding sucks!

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Primer serves two purposes. One to aid in adhesion of the Color coat and two to show any imperfections in the substrate. If you see em in the primer, you'll see em in the Final Coat. You don't want to sand thru the primer so two to three coats lets you sand out any minor imperfections with out sanding thru. You don't want to go to fine on the final sanding because the color coat needs something to "Bite" on but generally speaking 220 to 320 is about right. On the Color coat I usually use 320 and 220 on the primer. On the color coat on my Flamingo I just used a 3M scotch brite pad to knock off the "Nubs" between coats. Again, 4-6 hours between coats don't mix more paint than you can use in 8 hours. Hardener will RUIN the paint after 8hrs. I mixed 2 cups at a time which yielded a full coat of paint. That needed 1 oz of hardener.

Can't wait to see the shine of the White! I KNOW you're gunna be amazed at how glossy it is. I know I was. One more thing Stroke from the Shoulder not from wrist with the gun and get the light just right so you can SEE the wet line when painting. With white it's kinda hard to see it. Important to keep the overlap on the wet line of the paint.

alrighty then..... to put it into the imortal words of Woodsy,

SHE'S READY FOR HER NEW DRESS!!!!!!

yesir that's right folks, the primer phase is over. I finished up the final wet sand tonight. Here she is after the final primer wet sand. Caringly applied by hand with no sanding block or sponge. (I may or may not have used a little joint lubricant along the way  )

Sweet googly moogly! Drinking & sanding primer must go together like them Peas & Carrots do, 'cause that sure looks good from my house! Course I'm looking through a foggy, rain splattered lense.....

Look forward to seeing how the final color lays down.
