Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Next I cut out some stringer "blanks" using the cardboard templates and test fit them.

all the marker lines you see on the bottom are from my 3 days of fishing deck hatch and storage planning. I did a lot of head scratching and let the hamsters run in the cage over this one. I'm putting a baitwell in center, storage under the front of the cap and a couple of smaller access hatches. This will become more clear as I move forward, but suffice it to say I have a definite possible plan, maybe

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Now that I had the stringer blanks, it was time to figure out how to get their final height. I'm raising the front fishing deck about a foot higher than it's original position. This will allow for more storage, a front bait well and be more in line with the way the newer bass boats are built.

To get the deck where I wanted it, I needed to put the cap back on and establish a finished height from hull.

I've also so decided that the original lip just under the gunnel is the height I want my new deck at so there is only a small step up onto the gunnel. So, this means it's time for my first major cutting on the boat and changing of it's original appearance. I got the cap set back on and everything lined up. I got out my favorite precision surgical tool, sawzaw, and went to town on the rough cut.

Then I used the grinder and a dremel tool to clean up the cuts

Very cool progress CW...looks like a plan is beginning to gel in the hamster cage...:)...I am getting to the same point...the actual new layout of my tub...we are neck and neck...gonna be looking to you for some ideas and vice versa...this is getting to be the fun part...except of course for the grinding and sanding and glassing and fairing and painting and finishing, yet to come......

You will bed the cross braces onto the top of the stringers in a notch'd relief, correct?

Kerf the bottom of the brace, @ 2/3rds of the way thru the brace, along the centerline of the stringer. 1 @ 1/8" wide kerf should be sufficient. Pre-drill the screw hole in both stringer & brace. Just before installation, apply resin to the inside faces of the kerf & both screw holes. Apply PB to the kerf, and all the stringer notches, perhaps slightly more in the center stringer's notch. Install the brace, and screw it down...

Fillet & CSM the underside of the brace at the kerf. Maybe a layer of 1708 too.....

Where the brace crosses the other 2 stringers is treated the same, just no kerf or fillet..

Yup Gus, we're back on track with ya, lol. I didn't think I'd miss the grinding and glassin part but I think I do, lol I got a buddy teasing me that I might just have it ready for the ice fishing opener... my real goal is now spring, yup I said it... carp I guess I better get back to work.

Thanks JBC, that's what I was thinking but it sure helps to have confirmation. That is the plan then.

Thanks Troop, just trying to keep up with you these days. That hull is looking awesome!

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Last night I managed to get the stringer blanks cut to height and clamped into the hull for more hamster wheel action.

Tonight I was able to get the three stringer stubs in the front storage area cut out.

Now it's time for the hamster wheel to start again. I'm planning an 18" x 12" x 16" deep baitwell / adult beverage cooler :) in the front deck. Do I make this out of 1/2" or 3/4" ply? I have plenty of room and have even considered making it 18" deep (I've got 21" to play with for depth and am thinking if I leave at least 3 or 4 inches for running the drain under all would be cool.)

I'm also planning on a sub floor under the main deck inside all the storage. This way I can put foam underneath and drain it where I want the water to flow.

This is going to take some effort and a lot of workin the hamster, lol

Happy almost hump day everyone...

I'd think 1/2 would suffice for the cooler...you putting insulation in it too?

Looking good bro CW

For the cooler you might consider using the Blue foam from Lowe's and contact cementing two layers of 1/4" ext Plywood to it. then encasing it in glass. Built in insulation and would be very light weight. My hamster is tired now. Going back to sleep!!!!

Thanks Troop. I was thinking so as well. It's not like there's gonna be a ton of water in there. Yeah, I was thinking at least a couple of inches of insulation around it.

Thanks SP, just tryin to keep up with the others, lol

I thought either the blue foam or even the 2 part foam, either way it should add to both the insulating and flotation factor. I agree with the 1/2" total then encasing in glass (I'm planning on gel coating the inside as well).

What advantage do I gain from 2 1/4" layers over 1 1/2" layer?

My hamster is tired as well today, my Tigers seem to like to make me sweat and stay up late to see if they won. 1 more win and we're World Series bound,

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

If you have 21" of depth, I'd make it taper deeper to the stern: 18" at the stern end, 16" at the bow. That will force the water towards your drain at the stern end of the live well. Even if you're parked slightly bow down......

Don't know why WOG suggested 2X 1/4" ply. Maybe because you could fab all the sides & bottom out of 1 4X8 sheet, maybe even out of a 1/2 sheet..... A 1/4" sheet would be cheaper then a 1/2" sheet..... If you have 1/2" scrap, I'd use that though...

glad I asked Wood, that pic makes a lot more sense and I like it. I wonder if that would cause any issues with mounting the light, drain or fill tubes with the added thickness? hmmmmm. great the hamster just woke up again, lol

CW, I like what you did with cutting that lip..I plan on doing the same with mine at the stern...need to be closer to edge for fishing :)
not doing it till I have the cap on

Thanks Troop, I would have prefered that as well but I needed an accurate within 1/4" measurement for my fishing deck so I had to throw caution to the wind. I still have a little final grinding and trimming to do later but I have what I need at this point.

You are right, gotta be as close to the edge as possible. Or in this redesign, the less I have to trip over the better, lol

Your are getting alot done. All the work is looking great. The hamster is coming up with some great ideals.
I think WOG ideal will work great and will help keep it cooler than the 1/2". I wouldn't think the drains would be a factor if you seal them on both sides, in fact you would glass to seal on both sides this way.

Thanks Decker. I have an idea for the drain and fill fittings but I'll save that until later.... I did decide to go with a modified version of Wood's idea. I was originally planning on insulating with pour in foam around the box but Wood's idea makes a lot more sense.

So tonight I had only a little time but I was able to make a run and pick up the 1/4" ply and insulation. I got the insides of the bait well/ cooler cut out and the insulation. I then glued it up and clamped it old school style.

now the hamster is back at it again. I have plenty of insulation board so I'm thinking if 1" is good then 2" is better. Tomorrow, I'll cut the outer skin and one more layer of insulation to glue up.

Happy almost Friday everyone!
