I'm really looking to just replace the "caulking" along the stern where the hull meets the cap. The boat is suprisingly very solid. Transom and stringers are dry and solid. I couldn't even imagine trying to lift this huge cap and I see no need to do so.

I"m hoping for some options for filling this 1" gap along the stern....any help?

Here is a photo of each side of the platform painted with the middle section unpainted. I used "loctite" brand marine epoxy and it seems to be working well. I will report how it holds up to use. It seems very strong now.
Still looking for advice on filling the large gap between the stern hull and cap...pics were posted earlier.

I'm going to run out and shoot some paint on the center section of the platform, THEN I'M TAKING A NAP. I've had class all freaking weekend, all day long.(going back for my doctorate)
I'm beat. Still have to mow the yard yet also...........it'll wait.lol

ciera...that gap looks too big. something s fishy.

i would take all the caulk out......remove the rivets holding the rub rail on and re rivet it. then you can re caulk with sikka flex of 4200. it might take a while....(a few hours) but then the cap will fit properly.

ill look into the swim grid now.

that pic of the crack in the foot of the grid does not look too good. how did the loctite do on the stress parts?

and yes....you can make one out of wood and fibreglass....there is pics of me making a grid out of glass.

as far as teak.......if you go to furniture auctions......old teak furniture is going cheap.....really cheap.....tables and chairs for 20 bux a set....it is not uncommon to find a solid teak set.
you will just have to mill the wood.

The transom has been replaced at one time or another. I can see where the new joins the old from the inside. The job appears to have been done well. I too was concerned about this large gap. However, all around the rubrail there is no gap, the rubrail makes a nice tight fit to the hull/cap. The large gap in the photos just spans the stern.

I'm going to pull out the caulk and see what i've got. The stringers, decking, and engine mounts are solid. I've drilled em. The whole boat in general appears in pretty good shape for her age. That gap really is odd tho. I need to check out some similar models and see if the gap is standard. I hope

The loctite seems to be working on that crack. I tried pulling the sections apart and nearly gave myself a hernia.
The platform did support 3 adults at least, even with the cracks. The thru transom bolts used were too small and used tiny washers.
I"m reinstalling it with larger bolts and backer plates on the inside.

I never thought to think of auctions! Thanks for that tip. I'm gonna check that out. I pieced together and mocked up a rail with the aluminum on the stern last night with all my parts. I DON"T like how it looks at all. It really needs the wood. I may use the template I made up and attach the teak to the 7/8" rail somehow.


I got two coats on the topside of the middle section of the platform. It looks better than it did.

Btw,
The bolts I removed on the thru transom attachements were only 1/4". Almost all of them were bent. The ABS platform has 5/16" or so holes.
I guess the platform was "floating". I'm thinking the proper 5/16" bolts with a backer plate on the inside is sufficient. What is standard for this? How are others attached?

HOWEVER! I'm excited at the sweet deal I found!!! I went to my local Lowes to pick up some #10 SS screws for the rail base fittings for the stern rail. They had a package of 15count 2" #10 SS screws for .80 !!!!! original price was 14.67 I think. (it must have been mismarked, i even asked the guy and he said "if thats what it's marked, thats what you pay") I bought all they had left just for giggles. I have four bags of #10screws (60screws) for later use for only $3.20!!!
I'm not sure why that is so exciting to me...I literally sped home with a smile on my face. I guess it's the little things.

actually yes jbf! After I get this swim platform back on the boat and button up some wiring from moving the batteries, I will begin on the cockpit seating area...I'm ripping out the crappy thing I made the first time. I'm going to make something similar but improve the design a little. I basically just thru a triangle together out of wood I had laying around the first time and then covered it in vinyl. I have plenty of good wood to make a much nicer and a bit roomier seating area.

I have ideas of a cooler or icebox(maybe just storage) built into the back of the seating. There is a potable freshwater line already run to the location. Maybe a small sink would be nice.......hmmmmm

do you recall what size bolts you used to attach your platform?
Do you think 5/16" would be ok? I removed 1/4" bolts and most of them were bent.

Both my Baylinner and my Century are attached with 1/4 20 bolts. Yours must have took a hit or had one heck of a load on it. My son-in-laws Carver has 3/8 16 on them so your right in the middle. I have seen that gap on a few Baylinners right under the rub-rail. Maybe they did it this way to ease assembly from the factory? Dig some of the old out and see what it looks like. I filled the lower gap on my cuddy with regular automotive seam sealer from Eastwood. Yea I know not marine grade and all but it has been there for three years with no sign of failure. More pics man I love these boats.

Well crap. My buzz from getting the deal on the SS screws is completly worn off. I need beer.
I removed the caulking on the stern joint between the hull and cap.
The pics attached show what I found. Mulch. There was what at one time was approx. 3/4" x3" or so wide strip of wood between the hull and cap. It was mulch. The caulking had several holes in it which likely led to this. What concerns me most is what appears to be old rivets that aren't attached and screws attaching the rub rail. I'm thinking an impact occured at one time as proshadetree suggested. That may explain the cracked swim platform also. What happened!!!!!?????
As I said, the transom appears to have been replaced at one time or another. I can see where the different glass is. The transom itself is solid. As are the stringers and everywhere else I've looked. I was super proud of my old bayliner with no rot. I just found completely rotten wood. Mulch in fact.


How can I repair this properly? I'm assuming pull the rub rail and screws, put in new wood, reattach rub rail and seal it up.
I'm freaking out right now.

Need to see an above view of this area. In pic 1 it looks like a crack in the corner. This would allow a swell at the back that someone put the wood in. Remember also that this era Baylinner had some snotty assembly so on a wide stretch maybe that wood was factory installed. But on the upside You can cut a 3 inch strip and coat it with resin/ 1 layer of cloth and then pl in place and reattach as previous with a good line of calk.

No crack that I can see. I've been poking around with a flashlight for a while. I'm still inspecting and cleaning out the area.

I"m not sure if I can get a shot from above. I'll try to reach up in there from the engine bay and get a shot. The wood was really like mulch. I poked most of it out with my scraper and a flathead. My stern is not completely straight across....the outer foot and a half or so on either side angles just slightly. (not warped, original design. lol)
I'm assuming there were 3 pieces of wood which will need replaced. I will cover them with glass as suggested.

What I believe are rivets...(very top of pic #1 in previous post).....I can't see any holes in the hull where they would have attached but there are little "divots". Not an actual hole tho. There are several of these across the stern. Would they have been to hold the wood in place????? I'm confused on this one... I'll have to peel back the rubber from the rubrail and see what i've got there.



Edit: Proshadetree, I just looked at the photo again, I think what you thought was a crack is a shadow from an overhead line. The rub rail in the lower left of the pic?

I am assuming left is the cap of your boat and right is the transom. I do not see any rivets only screws. Any chance that the transom job before warped the back of the boat and was patched in this manner?

That is entirely possible about the transom job deforming something.
But wouldn't there be a crack or at least stress cracks in the glass somewhere from being so far out of whack? The rub rail also fits fairly snug to the cap, although it does have a few dings, but nothing majorly out of shape. I don't see anything else "out of line". Just the gap at the stern. I'll try to get some better pics of the corner where the larger gap begins. The wood removed was so rotted
I'm sorry, it was this picture that I think I see a rivet(I'll know when I peel back the rubber from the rubrail), You can also see the "dimple" in the hull. It is NOT a hole, I poked and picked at a few of them. They are depressions in the hull but not all the way thru. Some of the screws are different from others.... I dunno what is going on here. Something is screwy.....

I saw a post about some synthetic material used for trim and such on houses. Would this stuff work for my application? The compresive strength appears to be very good.....
Thoughts?

Disregard the question about the synthetic material. I will just use wood covered in glass. I know that it works and don't want to redo the job because of trying out some new material.

Pouring rain outside or I'd be out there working.

It looks to be nonstructural. Couldn't have been much with all the mulch in there so I do not see the problem with a synthetic material as long as it will hold a screw.

I DO believe it is NONstructural...basically just filling the gap. I'm leaning toward just replacing things the way it was and sealing it up. I'm still concerned of why the large gap is there. The wood was complete mulch so I wouldn't be surprised if it was factory installed. There are a few different screws compared to others also. I'm just concerned that something bad happened to cause this....an impact...shotty transom job.....I just don't know.
I wish I were rich and could buy a brand new boat that hasn't been jacked with!!!! lol

On a brighter note: I picked up a yamaha ef1400 generator today off of craigslist. Traded even up for a 380 pistol I had. Now to get air conditioning.....
