Ok, i've sent the original prop off for a rehub and rebuild. The solas prop IS the correct one, its just designed differently (not as good) as the volvo.
Should have the rebuilt prop back next week.

sorry for the late reply , i have a 14.5x17 p michigan wheel on currently,,, and am running the mercruiser 5.7, alpha one (1.5 upper gears).. my original prop was the same all around before i hit the submarine!!!. i havent hit wot yet, best i've done is 3600 rpm.. it just isnt capeable! however it does run nice at 2900 rpm at around 22mph gps and with the tabs its not too bad to get on plane.

i too am prop shopping and had my eye on a solas but i am looking for is the 15x15p size here on iboats.
that should give me 400 rpm which will give me closer to the recomended 4400-4800,,, ok not really but i am scarred of getting a 15x13p which the negative 800 wot rpm calls for. 2inch drop in pitch=3-400rpm. once i can get the admiral aboard to make the purchase i'll post my results(moneys tight right now)


so where do you stand with the current prop at wot?

i think the diameter also has to do with the pitch needed but not 100% i cant find anywhere that if you drop the diameter, what you need to do to the pitch to get the same result on the rpms at wot,,,,,, yep it is confusing

Sounds like you have quite a project going. I just purchase an 87 2455 and will be following a similar path. Mine was racked all its life, with little time in the water, and so far I haven't found any rot. But, it hasnt been off its trailer in five years, so I am sure it wil be quite a journey.

Howdy mark,
The solas prop sucked. I sent the original volvo prop for a rebuild and rehub. Came back like brand new! It performs soooooo much better than the solas. (i'll keep it for a spare)

The volvo is a 15"dia 19pitch just like the solas but the "blades" on the volvo are almost twice the size

I haven't bought mine yet, that's a shame, Solas is way cheaper, that's the way I was heading as well. Looks like I need another solution.

New long block will be here in two weeks. I hope to pull the old block and work on rebuilding the motor mounts this weekend.

Hey mark!

No, replacing with another 350 but with different heads so I should gain a slight increase in power. I had an issue with low compression on #8 cylinder toward the end of the season and started tearing things apart. To replace just the heads wasn't much cheaper than replacing the whole long block and NOW i'll have a fresh new engine. Woohoo!!!

I've been doing pretty good. Got divorced which is why I was away for a while. How have you been?

Sorry bout the divorce, but it looks as if you are adjusting well to the new found freedom well,, and scored the boat to boot, yehaa!

as for me, the admiral was in an accident and fighting hard to get better, she's had great improvements in the last 2 days. I also picked up a jet ski project while I was searching for a stand up ski,,, so it should keep me busy once the admiral gets released, until I pull the shrink wrap off the cruiser and start refinishing all the wood, ill start with the three rails, then go into the cabin.

I got the motor pulled out yesterday and will start stripping it for parts while awaiting the new long block. I think I'm going to re-gelcoat the bilge while the motor is out.

I bought a 1ton chain hoist from tractor supply and chained it to a large pecan tree.... It worked flawlessly.

These two were my helpers during the engine removal... Thanks guys!

Today, I put the old engine on the stand and began removing everything that will need to go on the new long block. (timing cover, harmonic balancer, oil pan, etc...)
I also put the heads back on and reinstalled the pushrods to ship it back when the new one arrives. I hope to get started on the bilge soon, cleaning it up and removing everything else to gel coat it.


and the empty bilge.... It needs a bath.

nice job, and thanks for the pics! Sounds like it went smoothly!

where did you get the long block?
i agree with you, now is the time to get into the bilge, check for any rot, check all the fasteners on the stern, check and replace any wires or connections, replace the bilge pump(ask me how I know that one, lol) and gel coat that sucker and get her ready for the new power! Cause quite frankly, if your anything like me, once you get the long block you'll want to get that thing in there ASAP :whip:

Good to see you're back on track with your Ciera. Missed your terrific pics and notes. Had a couple of those divorces myself and managed to always keep the boat. Had our 2450 re-engined last year. Installed a reman Jasper with a nice warranty so I hope to be able to be afloat a lot more this year. I believe you previously posted that you replaced your forward cabin hatch window but I've lost the info. Can you hit me back with the details? Keep the pics and details coming.
