Here at the lake now, just logged the first hour on the new motor.


Everything appears to be working correctly thus far. Fast idle at 1800 is already a couple of knots faster than my old motor with the same prop (15×19R).

Since this motor came with an alarm wire, I went ahead and added a Garmin fuel flow meter, exhaust temp sensor, and engine room temp sensor instead of just pulling one wire.

I brought oil change stuff, so I get to cruise around and jam out for a while.

Boat ran well... mostly. 20 hours on her now, going to do the second oil change when the rubber oil pan hose arrives (hopefully easier than changing through the dipstick).

WOT speed was 29.7mph at 5200 rpm with the 15×19 prop (target range 4400-4800), so a 15×21 prop is en route. The new motor has much better torque, and I jumped on plane in 5 seconds.

I did have an issue with the electric fuel pump, which I'm stuck with on this block. It's a rotary vane style that started heating up and not working after my fuel tank level went down after the first 8 hours; having the new fuel flow sensor sure made diagnosis easy. It was a PITA to change (would've been nearly impossible in swells), and the O'Reilly's replacement pump was a dud out of the box. After some reading, I decided to move the pump low in the bilge with only a foot of hose pulling from the gas tank. The original pump then worked for next ten hours without a hiccup.
