Yes thats definitely a ground.....as you already pointed out, question is why? Where does the rogue wire go before it reaches that grounding stud? Directly to it via nothing else?

The tan wire has 12v when the ign is on.....the sensor grounds that wire if overheat is detected.....this activates the overheat horn. Have you tested the horn now with that rogue wire out of the system?

I haven't tested it yet.... The tan wire was cut and then split into two... half of it goes to where the pink arrow is and where that butt connector in black is feeds into the dual "rogue" wire (half to the spliced tan wire and half to the ground... the other end of the wire was just hanging free) Not sure if that made sense....

Ok and I just went out and tried to test fire the motor. When pumping the bulb there is a gas leak in the engine. I know where the leak is but not sure if that should be doing that (guessing not) and not sure how to fix it. We had the motor running for about 10 sec before it died.. Started again and prob 5-8 sec run and can't get it started again. Im guessing where that leak is happening is putting too much air into the system. Take a look at the vid and see if this is something i can fix.

Its the VRO pump.....dont try and run it, definitely should not be leaking like that.....not sure if you can get a seal kit for them.

So even when the motor is converted to run on premixed 50:1 does fuel still run through the pump? Should it be a sealed housing? Know the basic run down on how to go about fixing it... Thank you so much for taking a look! Much appreciated!

Hopefully someone who has converted one wiil chime in and let us both know :D.....never owned a motor with VRO personally.

Gotta be sealed yeah.....apparently rebuild kits can be bought for the fuel side of those pumps only.....oil side not rebuildable.....

Edit: If you look further down in the link there is section that indicates the fuel side of the VRO pump can be used as a fuel pump only with pre mixed gas.....perhaps this is the way yours has been set up.

That "rogue" wire is starting to make more sense now......quite possible it went to the now defunct oil tank and activated the horn when the oil level got low (open circuit when oil level ok/closed circuit when low).....mystery solved?

Could have been... quite the possibility. The motor has been running on premixed since before I owned her. The oil inlet is currently plugged and it wasn't me that did the bypassing. The oil tank was still in the boat... i thought it was a reserve gas tank, held about a gallon ish... I didn't know much on VRO; I figured it was post my motor but apparently it came out in 1984. Here is a great link to some info on the VRO pump

The VRO story

One thing that is bugging me is the housing of the VRO. It doesn't even look like the two halves are meant to go together. They don't lined up at all. The green tub at the bottom of the pump is the plug for the oil inlet. If anyone has any info or help they can throw at me PLEASE DO! I'm tired of the set backs but not gonna let it get me down... I WILL BE ON THE WATER THIS SUMMER!!!!

Its usually done by disconnecting the knife connector under the rubber sleeve near the sensor end, turning the ignition on and shorting out the end that is wired back to controls against the engine block.....that wont work for you though until you track down the wire.

Ok for clarification. To test the Hot horn I need to disconnect the knife connector under the rubber in the red circle in pic. Turn on the motor and then just touch the wire coming from the red throttle plug against the engine block. This should sound the horn, correct? When you say shorting out I'm guessing just touch wire to block... don't have to do anything fancy like right?

turn the key to the on position and the touch the end of that wire to any bolt on the block horn should sound make sure you are not usin the sensor side of the wire use the side that goes to the harness

looking at the pic you have posted you may need to scrape a lil paint off the bolt or if the wire will reach a bolt thats not painted

Sorry mate 6am here.....

Yes thats right.....all you are doing is closing (grounding) the circuit and similating an overheat condition.....that stud you took the wire off should be within easy reach.

did u get that horn to work?

Haven't been out there today... been working on finding replacements parts for my VRO. I found the pump Sierra 18-7352
but i was hoping to get it overnighted from somewhere so i could be on the water this weekend but even iboats over night wont get here till tues. (which doesn't make sense as its $46 and then ground gets here weds and is $10)

Even amazon cant get it here until the 31st with next day shipping

Figured I'd give an update.... But I finally threw in the towel on the outboard. Put a lot of work into the motor, fuel pump, fuel lines, primer solenoid valve, impeller, etc. but when i got all finished up it appeared she was only firing on one cylinder. So to the shop it went. PSI checked out at 145ish and it was firing on both cylinders just one carb was so gummed up it was starving for fuel and dying when i performed my spark plug test.

Now I did do the rewiring and while in the shop had them check the Hot Horn and it was tested and working... so the mystery wire still remains a mystery!
