Ok, so I bought a 19ft open bow, 1985 4 Winns Horizon 190 with an I/O Mercruiser 4 cyl 140, 3.0. I bought it for half the price the guy was asking because he swore it would start, but I was unable to start it, therefore I wasn?t paying what he was asking. It sat in his driveway for 2 years, as he became disabled due to 3 separate surgeries. The cover became torn and sunk in from the weight of leaves and snow; therefore it got rained and snowed in for 18 months or so. The entire interior needs replaced, however that?s not the issue and is the easy part for me to do. I already have it stripped out and it?s all ready to be redone, but I am not going to go any further until I can figure out what?s going on with the motor. So this is my question and problem for you guys: I cannot get the motor to start. I?ve read so many posts and threads from this forum with no solid lead. The battery is brand new and is giving off 12+ volts. I?ve cleaned all of the terminals on the wiring and have made sure the connections are solid. My initial thought was that the starter was bad, simply because when I tried to start the motor, there would be a loud violent clank, but the engine would not turn over or crank. Notice I said loud ?clank,? not crank. I tried to keep the key turned and started to see smoke coming from the battery leads, and then noticed they actually melted a little bit. When turning the key, nothing happens except the loud clank, and then the battery heats up upon holding the key turned. Thinking it was the starter; I removed it and the slave solenoid (the smaller one that?s mounted underneath the circuit breaker) and had them tested at AutoZone. Both passed the tests stating they were both in good shape and fully functional. After finding this out, I read some more posts to see what I could find. I started to troubleshoot other parts of the engine. I tried manually turning the engine, to no avail. I removed the spark plugs as I read to do in a post, still no avail. I put a breaker bar on the alternator pulley, just to have it spin freely without the belt moving, although the belt is super tight. I am now thinking that the engine is seized, and that the loud clank from trying to start the engine is from the starter trying to engage the flywheel and becoming stopped traumatically. Does this sound logical at all? I have not taken off the outdrive yet, which is my next step from reading a post. What I have done is spray WD-40 in each of the cylinders through the spark plug holes. What advice do you guys have for me? Each and any advice will be a great amount of help, as well as greatly appreciated. Sorry for the novel above, but I wanted to be as descriptive as I could possibly be.
